Idita-Walk Challenge

I usually plug the Idita-Walk Challenge earlier than this, but this year the time sort of got away from me.

I've signed up to take the Idita-Walk Challenge starting next Tuesday, for the third year running. The Idita-Walk is an exercise challenge set up to be taken by people around the world at the same time as the Idita-rod dog sled races in Nome, Alaska. The Idita-rod route is 1,049 miles in length so people taking the challenge have to walk 1,049 minutes between February 1st and March 20th, 2005 or an average of 30 minutes a day for 35 days. The cost of the challenge is $30 (U.S.) and the proceeds go to the Boy Scout troop in Nome, Alaska. All participants who complete the challenge will be mailed a Idita-Walk t-shirt. You can also sign up your dog for the challenge rather than yourself and all dogs who finish the challenge get an Idita-Walk leash. There's also an Idita-Swim for those who would rather clock in their minutes in the pool. You can keep track of your minutes on an on-line chart and then e-mail the completed chart to the organizers when you're done.

Back in 2003, the Idita-Walk Challenge was the first walking challenge I ever participated in and I'm still sentimental about it. I've participated in the "Walk to Rivendell" and the Terry Fox Run since, but I still go back to the Idita-Walk each February, complete my 1,049 minutes and earn my t-shirt. The beauty of the Idita-Walk is that it is comparably simple, a particularly good challenge for those people trying to get themselves moving into an exercise program again. It's finite, only 35 days of walking, so the commitment isn't too overwhelming to the participant. And, hey, you get an exotic Alaskan t-shirt to show your accomplishment :). Plus, it's fun to know you're virtually walking with other friends and walkers around the world.

You can learn more about the Idita-Walk Challenge here, though if you're interested in participating you'll need to sign up soon, as the challenge begins this coming Tuesday: http://www.idita-walk.com/

The Idita-Walk folk also sponsor another walking challenge that goes year 'round which I think is pretty cool, too, though I've never signed up for it. I'll talk about it more later in the week.

If anyone else out there has signed up for the Idita-Walk, let me know. I enjoy knowing other folks are out on the trails with me, too.
