Curriculum Night
Parent-Teacher Curriculum Night tonight. So I'm home for two hours to eat and get changed before going back to meet with the parents of my students. My classroom and hallway are all spiffed up with student writing and art and mobiles (which I spent 40 minutes hanging from the ceiling before coming home today). Note to parents: If you're going to a Curriculum Night this month, do tell the teacher the classroom looks nice, as they've probably spent most of the week getting it prepared for you :).
And I have our weekly class time table up and my long range plans for the Gr. 5 units we're going to do in language, math, science, social studies and gym. There's an evaluation chart to show the parents how student work will be marked and a behavioral/homework guide to let the parents see the classroom expectations and what behaviors will land the kids in the Junior Detention Hall (a lunch-hour period of doing extra written work).
And I have my parent talk prepared, speaking about what the students will be learning this year and classroom rules/expectations with a focus on homework and organizational skills and how they can extend from school to home.
Then I'll chat with the parents who are milling about, which is always invaluable in helping to get some background on my students. After that, the parents and teachers will head to the gym for coffee and cookies and a presentation on educational connections between home and school.
Yawn, long day, being that I've already taught for seven hours and put in ninety minutes more on last-minute prep for tonight. Tomorrow is a PA Day, meaning I will be in a series of meetings and workshops all day, but the students will be at home.
