King Arthur
Had a lovely time last night with Debbie. We met at the Pickle Barrel at Eglinton where we had fish and salad and caramel crunch and peppermint tea. I told her about Toronto Trek and last weekend's filk at Sally's and she told me about her trip to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. She gave me a stylishly garish holographic bookmark with a fake pyramid on it- very Vegas.
After that we went to see "King Arthur". Yeah, I've read the reviews, I knew better, but we went to see it, anyway. Actually, going in with the low expectations I had, it proved to be more entertaining than I expected. Granted, the plot seemed to have nothing to do with the Arthurian legends and I don't know enough history about that time and place to know if anything happening on the screen was accurate. The characters were hugely forgettable and I ended up with battle scene fatigue that made Helm's Deep seem mild in comparison (at least I cared about the characters at Helm's Deep).
You know, this just hasn't seemed to be a very good summer for movies. There's been more movies that have disappointed me (Shrek 2, The Day After Tomorrow, Troy, King Arthur) than movies I've really enjoyed (Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban, Spiderman 2). Seemed a better season to go to documentaries (Super Size Me, Fahrenheit 9/11) than anything fictional. I'd still say the best movie I've seen this year so far was "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" way back in the early spring. Nothing's coming up before the end of the summer that looks terribly interesting either- wildly inaccurate knock-offs of favorite books (I, Robot), a movie that's tempting but looks too scary for me (The Village), an unnecessary re-make of a movie that's already really good (The Manchurian Candidate), so on, etc..
Which movie have you liked best so far this year? Any movie that you would recommend to me? Any movies you're anticipating before the end of the year?
