Firefly, Filk and Sai

I had a very good weekend, many things to enjoy.

Friday night after a nice dinner at Eastside Mario's John and I settled in to watch the last four of the "Firefly" episodes from the box set we had borrowed. Wow, excellent series and it is exasperating how many mysteries were left to be unraveled, how many relationships to be sorted out, how many plotlines that were left unfinished at the end of the last episode filmed. Sigh. But I am looking forward to the movie next summer.

Saturday I attended a house filk at Sally Headford's place in Thornhill. The gathering was -very- well-attended, with 14 local filkers singing, performing, reciting poetry, telling jokes and stories and generally having fun. There was so much energy in the room that the next three house filks this year were scheduled, too. Sadly, I can't attend the next one at Sally's place because John and I will be at Manitoulin Island.

Today John and I drove up north into the Orangeville area. We started by dropping in to see John's sister, Diane, and family. When we were at their farm on the Canada Day weekend John discovered that our niece, Morgan, was at the point in her martial arts lessons where she needs a pair of sai (which you can see here: http://willowpalm.com/Sai.html ). It so happened that John owned a pair of sai from a job he had several years back where he had sculpted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle costumes and he and three other guys used to do appearances around town. He bought the sai as part of his Raphael costume :). They've been in the back of the closet ever since, so he told Morgan she could have them. We dropped them off today, watched her demonstrate a few moves, had some tea and then headed out again.

From there we went to do some hiking at the Rockwood Conservation Area. That brought back some memories since I did a lot of camp couseling in that area when I was a teen. We even passed Camp Brebeuf where I worked 25 years ago. We've seen the Rockwood park on our maps several times, but never chose it because it seemed so small. Once there we were surprised that it had some really nice hiking trails with caves, a very popular beach and the ruins of an old mill. The mill immediately brought back the memory to me that I -had- been at that park before. Urban Tapestry had gone with Mark Osier to perform there at an SCA event several years back, the first time I had performed in Renaissance garb.

I came home tonight and made a huge pot of Weight Watchers vegetable soup (check out jewelsong's latest post for a yummy variation of that recipe). I added in a few different things this time and I'm going to have a bowl when I finish posting here.

All in all, a good weekend.
