This is My Home
Happy Canada Day! And a special hug for my hubby who grew up being told that all those fireworks on the July 1st horizon were to celebrate the day of his birth. We went out for a nice breakfast this morning, where I blew lots of WW points, and now we're settled in to watch Canada Day festivities and "Firefly" DVDs on TV before John has to go off to work tonight.
I'm still sucker for those noon hour Canada Day ceremonies from Parliament Hill in Ottawa where we see all the politicians glad-handing among the partying crowd of Canadians, all waving tons of maple leaf flags. There will be a children's choir singing, "This is our home, Oh, Canada!" and I'll listen and get all misty about how cool it is being Canadian. And then some east coast folkie will sing and a Native group will dance and a Canadian-content rock group will belt out a tune. Then our newly re-elected Prime Minister will get up and say, "Blah blah blah... Canada is great... blah blah blah... thanks for re-electing me... blah blah blah... strong and united... blah blah blah... go out there and drink beer and eat back bacon... blah blah blah... Vive le Canada!".
I got a laugh out of one Toronto Star columnist's nod to the close election results on Monday when he predicted what Paul Martin would say today: "My fellow Canadians, I am humbled by your show of support. Now, as soon as I get permission from the other parties, we shall commence with our festivities!".
Also was very amused by this political cartoon: http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Render&c=Page&cid=972514081251
Have a great day, eh?
