Anyone out there a fan of this series?

It's strange, Deb, Jodi and I went out to dinner a couple of weeks ago and discussion turned to current science fiction series on TV. Over the course of the conversation I came to realize that I wasn't following any of the recent sf shows on TV, that I haven't even been checking them out. Now, I know in general that I'm not watching much TV these days and when I do I'm more likely to watch news and documentary channels, but, hey, I used to call myself a sf media fan and I did come into sf fandom through "Star Trek", so I've always been fond of sf TV.

Now, in some cases I have checked out "genre" series, but they just haven't engaged me. Despite watching several episodes with good intention, I've never been able to get into "Buffy" or "Angel". Yeah, fandom sacrilege... I think it's partly because I've never cared for the whole vampire mythos. Saw the pilot for the new "Battlestar Galactica", but didn't care for it. Watched the first season or two of "Enterprise" and actually liked it, but my interest in watching it weekly petered out over time.

One of the series Jodi gave the thumbs up to in our sf series discussion was "Firefly". I'd heard of it, but knew very little about it. It was one of those limited series tucked away in my memory to check out sometime. At last week's UT practice Debbie came to dinner saying she had just checked out the pilot and she loved it, was sorry she'd waited so long to see it. At that point the series flipped into the front of my mind as something I wanted to check out. A friend of John's had the DVD of the series and let him borrow the first disc, the pilot and the first two episodes.

I liked it a lot. So did John. We want to borrow the rest of the episodes now. It took the first couple of episodes to suck us in, but the premise has lots of potential, the characters and the relationships between them are great and I really liked the wry sense of humour in the series. I also liked the special effects and the music. I hear there's a "Firefly" movie being made, too, so once I track down the rest of the episodes I'll look forward to it, as well. Thanks, Jodi and Deb, for the recommendation.

It's got me wondering what else I'm missing out there in the fantasy/sf TV world, both past and present. It's fun to catch up on a recent series like "Firefly", but I came across a DVD of "The Prisoner" in the library the other day and remembered there's several earlier sf series that I'd love to see someday, too.

QUESTION:

What is your favorite recent sf/fantasy show? Why do you like it? Do you have a TV series/mini-series/movie that you recommend that I check out? Which sf/fantasy series from the past do you still hold dearest? And why is that?

For the record, some of my very favorite sf/fantasy series are Star Trek- The Original Series, Star Trek- Deep Space Nine, the original Twilight Zone, Xena, Quantum Leap, Robin of Sherwood. And after a few more episodes I may add Firefly to that list.
