Urinetown and The End of the World

Deb and I went to see "Urinetown" yesterday and then we caught up to John to go see "The Day After Tomorrow".

"Urinetown" was excellent. I had read the script a couple of weeks back, but it couldn't begin to do justice to the timing and humour, the satire of everything that has to do with musicals, the self-referential moments, the sly political statements on all sides of the spectrum. Beyond that, though, the singing and dancing were stellar and watching the cast borrow gleefully from gospel and Jewish folk dance and country and Les Miz style epics and soft-shoe and everything in-between was great fun. Go see it if you ever get the chance. It's hugely entertaining.

Later in the evening Deb, John and I went to see "The Day After Tomorrow". Now, I'll admit that I wasn't expecting much from the movie and it was picked because there was nothing else we wanted to see that all three of us hadn't already seen. We spent the hour before we went into the theatre coming up with a list of typical disaster movie cliches so we could have the fun of seeing how many of them showed up in the movie. And though I won't spoil the movie by including our list here, it was extraordinary just how many we were able to mentally check off as the movie went on (Eg.- There's the dog! Of course! There's -always- a dog.).

Oh, I sound so cynical, but truth be told, the movie was pretty much what I expected- standard disaster movie plot and very impressive special effects. It was fun to watch. I recall from articles that I skimmed a few weeks ago that the science in this movie is all over the map. I may do an Internet search and go back and read those articles more thoroughly now, if I can still find them.

Today, I'm off to hike, get my hair cut and shop for groceries.
