Hectic

Things are pretty wild at school these days, not enough hours in the day. Add the soaring sticky temperatures, second floor sauna-like classrooms with no air-conditioning and it's making these June days rather tiring.

We're working like mad on dress rehearsals for "Annie", which we will be presenting Tuesday and Thursday of next week. We're at the stage where we're finalizing costumes, sound, lighting, the program book, flyers, singing, projection and all the last minute touches. It's taking a lot of time and both kids and teachers are feeling the crunch. I'm sure it will be worth it next week, but Lily and I are definitely taking time off from doing a play next year.

We're finishing off our track and field results. We have our choices picked for Gr. 5 high jump and 400 m racing, but we have to finalize our choices for 100 m and 200 m racing and long jump. The regional track and field meet is next Wednesday.

We're taking the two Gr. 5 classes to Queen's Park, the provincial government building, in Toronto this Friday. I've been working a lot in Social Studies this week to make sure they know about Canada's three levels of government and how the Ontario legislature works so the tour of Queen's Park will make sense to them. We've done a few mock parliaments where the students have played the roles in the legislature, so that should make seeing the actual parliament in Queen's Park more meaningful (eg.- Wow, I was the Speaker of the House in the classroom and, look!, there's my actual chair!)

We're putting up a display of all our Harry Potter work for the parents to see when they come for "Annie" next week. We have all their shoe box sets on display in the front hall of the school along with all the costume designs the classes came up with for Sirius Black and Professor Trelawney. Was amused talking to a Gr. 3 teacher yesterday. Her class went to the HP3 movie with us last Friday, but she had never seen or read any Harry Potter before then. She said to me yesterday, "I haven't been able to get that movie out of my mind all weekend! It was like the first time I saw 'E.T.' or 'Star Wars'!". Looks like Harry's converted another new fan.

John's been working on dubbing DVDs of the St. Joseph Lip-Syncing competition from our 60's Day on May 21st. The school sold fifty copies, so John will make a handy profit which he wants to put toward a new video camera. We hope to have them delivered to the students next week.

And, yikes, third-term report cards are due next Wednesday, so that will take most of time after school 'til then. Glad to know I have ohiblather to help me write the comments for those! ;)

I surely hope this heat breaks soon to make all this stuff easier to do.
