OK, I think I'm insulted...
So, after dinner tonight John and I decided to escape our assorted frustrations (his computer woes, my teacher paperwork) and go to the bookstore. Yes, for those keeping count, John and I went to three bookstores and a library today. It was a literary kind of day.
We went to "Chapters", which is a big bookstore chain here in Canada. I really didn't need any books, after all, as I mentioned earlier, I'd just gotten a library card for that very reason. Still, on whim, I decided I was going to buy a hardcover book to read and reward myself with for when my appraisal was done next week. Lots of people on LJ and the "50 Book Challenge" have been praising "A Short History of Almost Everything", essentially, I gather, a layman's book of the history of science, and I've been intrigued, so I went looking for it.
I spent the best part of half an hour looking for it. Checked the Science section, checked Reference, looked at the computer search station, which seemed to suggest the book was there, but gave no hints as to where. I wasn't quite motivated enough to ask for staff help, so I figured I'd look for it another time.
On the way out, though, I decided to look on the assorted display tables near the door, thinking it's a fairly new book and might be in such a prominent place. And yes, indeed, glancing at the display tables I did finally find "A Short History of Almost Everything" mixed in with a bunch of books about hockey and golf and motorcycles. And what did the sign above the table say? "It's A Guy Thing!". After searching all that time for a book -I- have looked forward to reading for several weeks, a book on the history of science could only be found as part of a display called "It's A Guy Thing!". Huh. No wonder I had the wrong mindset to find the book at "Chapters".
Last I looked at my calendar it was the 21st century. Ah, well. I've decided I'll buy my history of science book somewhere else. Or borrow it from the library.
