Autumn in New York? Groundbreaking
Roll Call No. 2
Welcome to Roll Call, a series where I revisit film rolls I’ve shot over the years and reflect on what they taught me. Some are gems, some are disasters, and plenty fall somewhere in between.
Are you ready to be sick of me? My prime time season has arrived — Autumn in New York. This roll is from my first fall here in November 2021, right before I officially called the city home.
The first photo — a tourist snapping a shot — is still one of my all-time favorites. The vibrant colors, the ducks rippling the water, the vintage-style outfit. But it’s more than just a pretty picture: two years later, this very view became part of my everyday life. The twin towers of the San Remo were the backdrop to countless walks when I lived on 71st Street.
That trip was a blend of work and play. I was in town to visit the NYC office, and my friend Emily tagged along to celebrate her brother Jack’s birthday. We stayed at the Washington Square Hotel, perched on the edge of the park and NYU’s campus. Naturally, we spent most of our time wandering around the West Village.
I met my soon-to-be roommate at Sogno Toscano, grabbed bagels from Tompkins Square, and joined Emily and Jack for a birthday brunch at Buvette. But mostly, we walked — soaking in the city and its fall foliage.
All photos featured here were taken on my Pentax K1000 on Kodak Gold 200 35mm film. Developed at Southbound Film Lab. (RIP)
