Susan Coventry Interview On 11, Feb 2025

"Susan Coventry is a Michigan native who writes sweet and sexy contemporary romance with a touch of humor. With over thirty-five novels, including standalones and multiple series, Susan creates heartfelt stories that have been compared to the works of Jill Shalvis, Susan Mallery, and Robyn Carr. When not writing, she enjoys reading, puzzling, and spending time in nature."
What inspired you to start writing romance novels, and how did you find your voice within the genre?

Having been a fan of the genre for years, when I decided to write a book, there was no doubt that it would be a romance novel. After reading a variety of authors’ works, I knew I wanted to write light-hearted, humorous love stories rather than dark or angsty ones.

Your books have been compared to the works of Jill Shalvis, Susan Mallery, and Robyn Carr. What do you think draws readers to your novels in the same way as these authors?

I strive to write characters who are likable and relatable like you could meet in real life. I think the same can be said of the authors I’ve been compared to.

How do you balance the “sweet” and “sexy” elements in your contemporary romance stories?

I like to take the reader on the journey of the characters’ relationship—from the moment they meet, to their first date, to when they become intimate. In doing this, I think it’s easy to balance the sweet and sexy moments throughout the story.

Your novels are often set in Michigan. What is it about this state that inspires the settings and characters in your books?

Having been born and raised in Michigan, it is a good starting point for my stories. It is easy to envision my characters going to places I’ve been or having similar experiences as me. I also like to travel and often use other locations as the settings for my books.

What do you enjoy most about writing romance, and how do you keep the stories fresh and engaging for your readers?

I like writing romance novels because they provide messages of love, hope, and happiness. To keep my stories fresh and engaging, I use a variety of romance tropes, such as: friends to lovers, second chance romance, and single parent romance. The characters make the story, and they are never the same twice.

You’ve written over thirty-five novels. How has your writing process evolved since you started?

I published my first novel in 2015. Since then, I have developed a process that works well for me. First I draft a general outline of the book, identifying the main characters, settings, and tropes. Then I make a list of potential chapters or events that will occur in the story. After that, I let the characters lead me where they want to go!

What role does humor play in your books, and how do you incorporate it without overshadowing the romance?

I like to incorporate humor into every story as there is in life. I use humorous exchanges between the characters whenever it seems natural and demonstrates their closeness. Conversely, there are serious and emotional exchanges as well.

Can you share a memorable moment from one of your books that still makes you smile or laugh?

There is something in every book that made me laugh out loud. It’s hard to choose just one!

What kind of research do you do to ensure your characters and settings are authentic, especially when portraying life in Michigan?

I’ve been to many of the places mentioned in my books, including shops, restaurants, and tourist attractions. If I’m writing about somewhere I haven’t been, I research it online. Luckily, fiction authors have a lot of creative license to work with.

How do you come up with the names for your characters, and do you have any favorite character names you’ve used?

Sometimes character names just pop into my head. Other times, I research popular names based on the ages of the characters. Sometimes, I hear a name and like the way it sounds, so I’ll use it.

What’s the most rewarding part of hearing from readers who have connected with your books?

It’s always great to hear from readers who have read and loved my stories. If my books bring joy to readers, that is the greatest compliment to me.

Do you have a favorite trope or theme that you love to explore in your romances?

I have written several books featuring an older woman and younger man. This trope is extremely popular with readers. I like to explore the idea of love without age limits.

Do you have a favorite series or standalone novel?

I will always have a soft spot for my debut novel, See You Then. My favorite series is The Harbor Springs Series which takes place in Harbor Springs, Michigan. This is one of my favorite vacation destinations, and I loved setting a series there.

When you’re not writing, puzzling, or spending time in nature, do you have any go-to hobbies that help fuel your creativity?

Reading is still my favorite hobby. I read for enjoyment and also to perfect my craft.

How did you first come across the AllAuthor website? What do you like or dislike about the site?

I came across AllAuthor when researching helpful websites for authors. I like the book mockups and the affordability of having a feature book. I find book marketing extremely confusing and frustrating so I appreciate any help I can get.
