When protecting your family means risking everything—including your future—how far would you go?

Decker Savage's world is crumbling. His baby brother, Casey, has died. His parents are divorcing. Baseball—his only escape—is slipping through his fingers.

And things are about to get worse.

At a dingy café, Decker spots his mother meeting a mysterious stranger. When the man bolts and his mother looks devastated, Decker follows the stranger into the darkness. The pursuit leads to a violent confrontation, life-changing secrets, and a dangerous web of lies that threatens to destroy what remains of Decker’s family.

Now someone is stalking him, and anonymous notes demand his silence. As the threats escalate, Decker must make an impossible choice: confess to a crime he didn't commit, or watch his family pay the price. With his baseball scholarship on the line and criminal charges looming, Decker must solve the mystery before the stalker strikes again.

Perfect for fans of psychological suspense and coming-of-age mysteries, Risky Pursuit explores the power of forgiveness, the weight of family secrets, and one teen's courageous efforts to save everything he holds dear.

From the Back Cover

In this intergenerational psychological thriller, high school senior Decker Savage, who grieves his baby brother's death and his parents' impending divorce, sees a scruffy stranger with his mother and follows him to a dark house. He hears shouts upstairs, a man hits the floor, and the culprit escapes. Decker follows the elderly victim's ambulance, and through their mutual love of baseball, they become friends. But the man can't remember who attacked him, and Decker fears the assailant will return. His grades crater, his relationships go south, his baseball skills are erratic, and by entering the man's house, he broke the law. Anonymous attacks and notes threaten him: forget the man and the house, or he, his family, and his friend will be the next victims. Can he uncover the culprit's identity and solve the mystery of the attacks? He devises an ingenious plan involving the victim, villain, and his family. If his explosive plan doesn't work, his life, loved ones, and future will be destroyed. In this suspenseful family thriller, victims and villain intertwine in a heart-filled story with characters you won't forget.

The characters in Risky Pursuit, a suspenseful, multi-generational family saga, aren’t perfect. They’ve made costly, sometimes grievous, mistakes. But this novel illustrates that past mistakes need not define us, our relationships, or our futures. Looking for an uplifting read? Risky Pursuit promises readers that redemption is possible—no matter one’s age.
By combining a multi-generational cast with a suspenseful plot, Risky Pursuit has something to offer readers of every age. In Risky Pursuit, author Nancy G. West excels at letting readers inside the minds of characters in three generations—Decker, the troubled teen protagonist, his divorcing parents, and a lonely old man, estranged from his adult children. The novel also illustrates how a common love—baseball—can break down barriers and turn strangers with seemingly little in common into trusting friends.

This is the first book I have read from this author but it will not be the last. This is a fast paced mystery concerning a troubled teen who stumbles on a mystery concerning a man who he thinks is involved with his mother. He gets involved by being in the house of an elderly man who is attacked by the same man. Decker, the MC, tries to figure out who hurt the man. I highly recommend this book to all mystery readers.

Nothing happens in this book. I picked it up because it was grouped in a top 10 list on Goodreads with psychological thrillers like Gone Girl. This a book where the characters make a lot of breakfast and go to baseball practice. Nothing really happens. If you buy the book, you'll notice several "reviews" for the book that just sum up the short book description. I don't think the reviews actually read the book to the end, but I did. There is about 20 minutes of good content toward the end of the book. It would have made a short story with careful editing. The characters in the book do not talk nor think like people do and they act like folks in the 1950's acted. Kids today do not hang out in diners and if one lost his phone, he would not wait days before remembering to look for it. Teenage boys do not look at a love interest and think, "When the weather gets warmer, it is too bad she will stop wearing these cute sweaters." This is how mothers and grandmothers think. I fell for a clever marketing ploy on Goodreads. I hope to save you from the same mistake.

Risky Pursuit is a compelling story that follows Decker Savage, who, after a devastating loss and the crumbling of his family, struggles with emotions that endanger his friendships, his good grades, and his athletic future. Despite mounting peril, he unravels mysteries and seek answers. Nancy G. West gives an excellent psychological portrayal of a smart high school boy struggling with future-altering decisions and who finds an adult mentor in an unexpected way.

I don’t normally indulge in YA books but a friend recommended it. Oddly, she herself is not an avid reader. She thought my grandson would appreciate it. Natives of San Antonio will have fun following Decker through town as he goes to unusual lengths hoping to solve a mystery involving his mother and a stranger. It is a page turner for sure! Anyone needing to engage a reluctant reader would do well to consider this book as enticement.
