- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2025Format: PaperbackLa Florida: Flower of the Bitter Orange is a compelling and well-researched historical novel that brings a turbulent era to life with impressive accuracy. The details of the Loyalist experience after the American Revolution—especially the flight from Virginia to British East Florida—feel authentic and grounded in real history. Frank A. Mason clearly did the work to make the setting, politics, and daily struggles believable.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2025Format: KindleThis is a wonderful read about the part of the American Revolution that happened on the far reaches of the battle sites, namely Florida. Great description of those who fled to the undeveloped wilderness to survive, and the internal battle of the men on both sides of the war. Mason wrote as if he lived through the flight to Florida and the hardships and rewards of the families who cut out a living there. Highly recommend for young and old.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2025Format: KindleFlower of the Bitter Orange is a well-written American Revolution story about a family that is forced to flee from rebel forces that threaten to hang the male inhabitants and burn the family's property because they side with the British Crown only to find themselves in similar circumstances in South Georgia (near St Mary's and the Florida border). The author handles controversial topics, such as those relating to slavery and Native Americans, deftly without compromising historical accuracy and without resorting to political correctness.
