- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2024Format: KindleVerified Purchase"Death Plays with Fire" by Sharon Lynn is the third installment in A Cotswold Crime Mystery series. This beguiling, vivid, and tightly plotted novel offers a tantalizing mystery filled with suspense and action. I raced through it, captivated by the likable protagonist, the fast-paced narrative, and the stunning conclusion. Make yourself at home in this delightful series of mystery, love, and danger. It's a captivating read from cover to cover.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2025Format: KindleSharon Lynn has written a charming mystery, DEATH PLAYS WITH FIRE. It is set in the Cotswolds part of England. Her feisty and funny protagonist, Maddie, is a student with a short-term fellowship to help uncover ancient Roman ruins. Her colleagues are a professor, grad students, friendly locals, and other workers. Plus a very likable boyfriend. While on the dig, Maddie’s obnoxious roommate is stabbed, encased in wicker, and set on fire. It looks like the kind of human sacrifice that Julius Caesar wrote about. Maddie must find out who the murderer is, get her work term extended, and decide what she will do about the handsome Scottish man she is in love with. Despite the burned corpse, the book is not dark and gruesome. It has a nicely light tone and you will cherish the characters. Lynn is adept at accents and colloquial phrases and makes all her characters distinctive. I particularly found Maddie’s voice captivating. Her funny actions and observations make it fit for any age. I really enjoyed DEATH PLAYS WITH FIRE and recommend it to anyone who would like a fun mystery with a satisfyingly happy ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2025Format: PaperbackThis third book in A Cotswold Crimes Mysteries series showcases author Sharon Lynn’s ability to ramp up angst, crime, and danger. As American student Maddie McGuire stumbles upon multiple crime scenes, she starts wondering with good cause if England has it out for her. It doesn’t help that a snarky detective named Douglass thinks she’s guilty of every transgression—from the stabbed, charred body inside a wicker man, to the theft of an ancient gold coin, to the withholding of vital evidence. And more.
Amateur sleuth and archaeologist Maddie must prove herself innocent of crimes, avoid antlers, zip ties, knives, and fire, search for a phenomenal treasure, pinpoint killers, determine Scottish boyfriend Edward’s level of commitment, and learn if her employers at The Roman Baths will extend her internship. Whew! The plot's and characters' intensity and scads of witty Briticisms make this reader hope for many more page-turning books in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2025Format: AudiobookI enjoyed spending time once again with Maddie, Edward, and the gang as they continue to stumble across murder and mayhem in Bath and the Cotswold countryside. The Roman baths and archaeological digs in the area add a unique twist to the story, and I love how Maddie maintains close ties with her childhood BFF back in the States (by FaceTiming her at all hours of the day and night). In this outing, Maddie not only finds herself facing psychopaths and con-artists, but the end of her internship and the possibility that she will be forced to return to the U.S. are looming large. While I would prefer to see Maddie become a bit more assertive, this book brought some character and relationship development, as well as humor, that add to the series. I do hope to have more adventures with this group of characters and perhaps not have to wait 2 years between books.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2025Format: KindleThe third installment in the delightful Cotswold Crimes Mystery series is fabulous! The cast of characters continues to entertain. I love the more with each story! “Plays with Fire” puts the main character, American intern Maddie, in danger yet again as she’s at the center of a criminal scheme at the archaeological site where she’s working. I continue to love the smart combination of historical facts with modern-day sleuthing in this series. I always learn so much! And as a confirmed anglophile, I love all the English-ness of it all. The dialogue is so well-written—ranging from friendly banter that will make you laugh to high-stakes police interrogation that’ll have you on the edge of your seat. Well plotted and fast-paced with some super twists this is a series that needs to be on everyone’s must-read list!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2025Format: Kindle“Death Plays with Fire” by Sharon Lynn is book three in the Cotswold Crime Mystery series. It’s an excellent sequel in the series, and I was captivated by the young main character and the story’s setting. It’s like touring the Cotswolds while solving a mystery.
Author Sharon Lynn writes a compelling story and gives readers a tour through the Cotswolds in this book; her references and research are like a class in English history! The main character, Maddie McGuire, is on an archeological dig plagued by danger. Still, readers also will appreciate learning about the history and customs. The secondary characters add layers of intrigue. It’s the perfect book to read while wrapped in a blanket, enjoying tea and scones, and waiting for spring!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2025Format: KindleDelightfully clumsy, Maggie McGuire has lit my heart on fire once again. My avid interest in archeology is peaked. Maddie works on a nymphaeum, cleaning garden pilea and the medispa as apotropaic statues look on and druidic practices take central stage. Her investigations usually put her in peril, which makes it so worth the read. Fantastic, fiery fun.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2025Format: PaperbackSpending time with her characters in book three is like returning home to friends. What I most enjoy is how each page has points and details about the people, this nook of England and its history. Death Plays with Fire is a spritely read that leaves me feeling like I am spending time in English villages, pubs and archeological digs.
