Lady Angel of Shenandoah County: The Damsels of Shenandoah County Book 1 Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars (7)

Her family fortune is gone.
Perhaps she should be thankful her
uncle has found her a wealthy husband in
the beautiful Shenandoah Valley.

But she isn’t.

If she accepts, she’ll go from a pauper to a
wealthy man’s wife with enormous responsibility.
But she’ll never make a good wife,
and she knows it. Her temper is volatile,
and her spirit far too independent.

Lord Wellington isn’t the only one pursuing her;
however. So is Charles Ashwirth.

And his plans for her are terrifying.

I promise you’ll laugh, love, and
your heart will be warmed in:
Lady Angel of Shenandoah County
(The Damsels of Shenandoah County,
Book 1)

A note from Pippa...

It all started with an assignment from my beautiful and elegant fifth grade teacher, Mrs. J, who had our class write a short story and then read it aloud.

So, I did. The story began with a group of my friends and classmates, who went on a fictitious camping trip.

Enter a grizzly bear. As it attacked the camp and body parts began flying, I looked up.

Poor Mrs. J! A twitch had appeared somewhere around her left eye, and she looked horrified. But she kept quiet and let me finish.

By the time the story ended, she was white as a sheet. And she never, ever again asked me to read one of my stories aloud.

But my friends all thought it was cool, so the stories kept coming.

And I was hooked.

This story is set in 1850. It starts in Philadelphia, PA, and then moves to Strasburg, VA. Angel is a young woman with more than her share of disappointment and heartache. Geoffrey comes to PA looking for Angel. His father's dying request was for Geoffrey to travel to Philadelphia to meet and marry her. He warns his son that she will need taming. There is attraction between Angel and Geoffrey from the start, but Angel has no choice but to agree to marriage as she is penniless. Geoffrey is somewhat of a dour man, but he lays out his expectations and needs honestly and forthrightly. A lot happens to Angel once she travels to live with Geoffrey, but the two get through everything and find themselves in love. There is a HEA.

I received an advance copy, and this is my honest review.

I enjoyed the beginning of this new series and look forward to seeing where the next book takes us. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the spring of 1850, Angelica Dawson has found herself orphaned, and the news from her Uncle is that the estate is in trouble between her late stepfather’s gambling and the death of her beloved mother. She is also informed that her Uncle has a suitable gentleman for her to meet and hopefully marry.

    “Always and forever.”

Lord Geoffrey Wellington travels from Shenandoah, Virginia to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to meet the young lady, fulfilling his father’s dying wish. He is warned that she has a temper that matches her flaming red hair and will need to be tamed. The courtship and marriage are quick, but both feel an attraction. Geoffrey lays out his expectations and consequences for poor or misbehavior.

The plot of the story is full of mystery, suspense, assault by highwaymen, kidnapping, and adventure. Geoffrey is extremely protective of her and does not want to let her out of his sight, or even to walk on her own with all the dangers she has incurred. The staff and townspeople fall in love with the feisty Lady Wellington, but her husband isn’t impressed with some of her antics and takes her in hand.

The story will keep the pages turning with a large cast of characters, and incidences that take place. Geoffrey will have his hands full with his spirited young wife, and he isn’t afraid to correct her misbehavior, and the punishments are detailed. The sex scenes are very mild and more implied than detailed. I love the chemistry between Angel and Geoffrey, and that they do get their happily ever after.
