Crossing In Time (Between Two Evils Book 1) Kindle Edition
If she ever wants to see him again, she'll have to take the risk.
"Engaging, Funny, Romantic & Harrowing"
~Publishers Weekly Starred Review
After reconnecting with the one-that-got-away—and then losing him in a pandemic—middle-aged Iz struggles to survive in a remote mountain cabin. As loneliness and despair set in, she finds hope in caring for abandoned pets—until a man appears and offers her a one-way trip to the past.
With humanity teetering on the edge, she gives up everything in an attempt to alter the dystopian present—and see her missing lover once more.
As time runs out, she's whisked into a coffin-like machine set to plunge deep into her past. (A neural net insists she is humankind's best hope. No one knows why.) They neglect to mention the time machine has been activated once before—with deadly results.
Miraculously, she awakens on a pristine beach—buck naked and suffering radiation-like side-effects—but 20 years younger! With only hours to live, she must persuade a young man to modify their future relationship and thereby set off a chain of events that will prevent the pandemic.
Our young hero falls hard for her (what guy could resist a smart, middle-aged woman in a newly acquired vixen's body?) until she blurts out that she's from the future and here to "fix" him.
Turns out, it's not him that needs fixing; it's her—and it's far too late for that.
Or is it?
Content Warning
This book contains material that may be disturbing to some and, in movie form, would be rated NC-17 for strong language, nudity, sexual situations, and violence. It includes attempted sexual assault, abduction, intense physical danger, miscarriage, confinement, a pandemic, religious fanaticism (Christian), government incompetence bordering on malice, mistreated animals, gun violence, near drowning, and (human) death.
Genre Warning
Crossing in Time is a smart, character-driven love story told from 3 points of view (in 1st-person, present tense): our plucky heroine's, her steadfast lover's, and a gay British physicist's. At times, the gentle reader must keep track of 3 intertwining storylines. If you prefer your fiction to be light, this is probably not the book for you. (But the audiobook might be. The dual narrators are effing awesome.)
Although the book contains a love story, it does not have a Happily Ever After ending and is not a genre romance: There's no alpha male or damsel in distress. If you're inclined to assume smart, head-strong women are annoying—or thoughtful, empathetic men are weak—this is likely not the book for you.
Even though the story contains a time machine, no laws of physics are violated. But if you're looking for hard sci-fi that focuses on gadgets and world-building (or you dislike the word breast, for instance), skip this one.
This is NOT a YA novel. If you can't imagine being in love with someone you haven't seen in 20 years, pick another book.
Also, there's profanity, blaspheme, alcohol consumption, frosted donuts, and a bowling alley (but no smoking—except for the time machine.)
Finally, the story jumps between a dystopian action-adventure, a sci-fi techno-thriller, a time travel suspense mystery, and a tumultuous love story. Steer clear if you prefer your fiction fit into neat and tidy genres!
This is the 1st book in the Between Two Evils series (5 total), and all will be revealed in the end. I ask for your indulgence as I tell the story in the best way I can. I know how it all ends, and I think you'll like it.
If you made it this far, woohoo. I think you might like the book. 🙂
TLDR: Reader discretion advised.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTime travel, multiple universes, and a love that spans time and space all come together and create a story that is as fascinating as it is heart-wrenching. Crossing in Time touched my heart and satisfied my sci-fi-loving mind with its look at a pre-apocalyptic world and the desperate attempts to change what's coming.
What I Loved
I love quantum physics and the theory that there are multiple universes created from people's different choices. I was an avid fan of Sliders (TV show) and loved to see the concept used in books and on the screen. It is so fascinating and mind-blowing to think about it. In Crossing in Time, it is all these things and more, as the possibility that this theory is real means the difference between life and death for the world's population as a disease quickly spreads to all humanity.
Not only are there multiple universes, but the characters also discover the possibility of time travel and how to do it, which blends so seamlessly with the numerous worlds that, instead of making it harder to suspend disbelief, actually makes it more accessible. Time travel is a fun concept and one that creates a lot of suspense and tension in the story, causing the pages to turn faster and faster as you want to know what happens next.
The love story that threads itself throughout the story adds an extra layer to an already tightly woven tale of survival. Diego and Isabel reconnect at the beginning of the novel after being apart for decades and rediscover the love that they lost the fateful day Diego stepped on a plane and out of Isabel's life. This love story is fraught with dangerous situations and turbulence as the world careens out of control. It is the thread that holds the story together and brings poignancy to an already potentially tragic tale.
The story has three narrators, and they work together well, keeping the story moving forward from three necessary perspectives. The voices were not always easy to distinguish between, but they are authentic enough that confusion was not an issue, as can happen with multiple narrators. The characters are all complex, full of depth, and their scars often show as they make hard decisions. The setting is an exciting mix of places that added to my fascination as the story unfolded.
To Read or Not to Read
Yes, do read it!
It is not a YA, as Amazon will erroneously lead you to believe. It is very much an adult tale that will have you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.
I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was an enjoyable book. I wasn't expecting the dystopia type world. I've always liked that but after covid and being a healthcare worker in a bordering state having to go through check stops to enter the state, this sort of gives me ptsd but it also has helped with it. The world and story builds and it's so different from anything I've read. I love the concept and it all makes good sense and seems plausible except for a few times. Those times are like a dream that seem so real but nothing makes sense in the dream.
I'm not crazy about Iz. Especially when she went back and talked to a younger Diego. She's so selfish sounding and all about her and telling him how to act when he meets her. I almost couldn't finish. Of course, I understand what she means but some of the stuff was her fault too. She does admit it but it just seemed over the top. It does end on sort of a cliffhanger but in a good point of "time"- pun intended lol.
The narration was excellent for the male voices. I didn't like Iz's voice. It sounded ok but it was depressing. The main issue was I couldn't hear most of it. Had my earbuds wide open and she still mumbled and whispered. I'd like to listen to the next book but due to this, I'll have to just read it.
This is a review of the audiobook.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWith rich detail, lots of plot twists, and a trio cast of delightful and easy-to-love characters, Crossing in Time by D.L. Orton is an absolute joy to read. Rather than bore you with the premise and plot (the book blurb tells you what you need to know), I'd rather spend time highlight the areas where Crossing in Time really shines.
Plunging the reader right into a bleak and dystopian possible future, Crossing in Time doesn't waste any time. I was immediately transfixed and carried into a beautifully paced storyline. With crossing POVs between the three main characters, there isn't a dull moment in the book. If you're looking for a fast-paced and engaging beach read, this is an excellent choice.
Like most truly good contemporary fiction, Crossing in Time is a seamless cross-genre blend, with a sci-fi premise, a romantic focus, and a touch of thriller. Science Fiction isn't the weird little cousin anymore, and much of 21st century entertainment is based on the possibilities and hazards of our over-technological culture. It's a natural premise setting for any novel that deals with human nature and interaction in the contemporary novel. The heart and yes, even the main plot arc, is the romance between two of the main characters, Iz and Diego, and the author's focus on this aspect makes this an accessible novel for those who would not normally read a sci-fi novel. Weaving these two approaches is the novel structure, touches of a technological thriller that never lets go.
Isabel is the main protagonist, and the best-developed character. She's easy to like and although she's extremely competent, she's also very relatable. Diego takes some time to get to know, but it's a gentle and natural process of revealing his character that never feels forced and never makes him out to be a romance stereotype. In fact, Diego not following the romance model of "alpha male" was a relief. He's a real person. Matt, who works in the book as a sort of objective narrator is both sympathetic and fun. All three characters are subtlety and delightfully fully developed. They're the kind of people you'd want to hang with.
Crossing in Time has a little something for everyone: drama, romance, sex, sci-fi, doomsday scenarios, shoot 'em ups, and breathtaking action scenes. It never talks down to readers, nor does it patronizingly exploit genre tropes. It's an intelligent read, which is my highest compliment. I'm very much looking forward to the future installments of this series.

Proud Book ReviewsReviewed in Australia on June 27, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! There's a bit going on but I loved it all!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI’m a fan of time travel, especially when it’s about finding your lost love. It just screams amazing, epic, love story. What other kind of story can give you all the feels and leave you wanting more?
Based on the blurb, I thought more time would be spent in the past. I thought the way time travel would work would be different.
One of the great things about time travel is that every author can make it their own thing. I’ve seen quite a few different types of time travel of the years and explored the laws surrounding it. And still I was totally surprised about how this works!
Before I talk about the ending, I want to say one thing. The prologue doesn’t seem to fit with the story and when it occurs. The information in it felt conflicting once I got to the part of the story it sat in. I’m not sure if this was just something small that got overlooked, but a couple of sentences really made it feel weird to me. And it’s something that can be easily fixed so I wanted to call it out.
Ok. The ending.
What an ending!
Of all the twists and turns we’d already experienced in the story that ending was NOT one I saw coming!
I got to the end and all I could think was “But…but…wait…no…what? What just happened?” Obviously, that means I need the next book. I need to know what happens next. I need to understand which of the theories going through my head might be right!

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSo this book has a lot of scientific terms which I was not familiar with even though I love reading Science Fiction. But I adored this book. So the plot of the story is very similar to what is happening now with this virus and they have to find a vaccine. The story line was so fast paced but in a good way. And the book got over soon. The characters were well written, especially Isabel. She was my favourite character. But there are times in the book I didn't like her. But the story which follows her is really very good, and she does develop as a character. Overall I liked this book and it went on to explain different concepts of time travel I hadn't read.

KRReviewed in the United Kingdom on July 2, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Romance and Time Travel
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis novel has a little bit of everything and I loved it. I really enjoyed crossing different genres as this romance unfolded.
This isn't in any means a simple plot to follow and the time travel element means you have to focus a little more than with most romances in order to keep tack (well at least I did anyway).
The first part of the story is mainly a funky and modern romance. We learn about Isabel and Diego, old flames who have reconnected after time apart. Their relationship is explored well and I got swept up the couple finding out about each other again after so long, learning from their mistakes an building a stronger, new relationship. This is not aimed at younger audiences as the romance gets a bit steamy but I liked this. I think it intensified the relationship further and gave the novel a more adult feel. As with most romance novels, the couple face a huge dilemma. Unlike most romance novels this dilemma involves Isabel travelling back in time to convince a younger Diego to fall in love with her. It's not just a race to save her relationship, it's also to save the world that she know.
And as a genre twist it works in a uniquely brilliant way.
Told from Isabel and Diego's viewpoint with some chapters from an additional character named Matt, this is a fun and pacey story but it deals with a lot of issues to. I loved all the characters and their development as the writer explored relationships but also environmental issues and destruction.
Be warned, this book doesn't seem to travel the path you expect and just when you think you've settled in for the ride, the destination changes.
I highly recommend this to any romance fans who are looking for something with a different setting and not following a typical plot or to a science fiction/dystopian fantasy fan who likes some romance in their novels.
Now I need to go and read book 2 before I burst!

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA true love story, excitement, thrill, amusement, science fiction – these words define the novel – Crossing In Time: The 1st Disaster. Once I started reading, I could not put the book down until I finished the chapter, and then the next chapter, and eventually the entire book! The dialogue used in this novel is quite realistic and makes the story come alive. Frankly speaking, you will like the novel if you are a fan of sci-fi books, time travel or love stories. The book also contains humorous incidents which make for some fun reading. The bottom line: if you are a sci-fi lover with a soft spot for love stories, you’ll want to read this book.
