Crimson: An M/M Romance Spy Thriller (Of Shadows & Secrets Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars (888)

A sweeping 7-book, bestselling spy romance series.

Their first mission was each other.

Will Shaw never expected Harvard to grow dangerous.

Will expected lectures and long nights in the library. Instead, he met Thomas—an enigmatic naval officer training on campus, a man who carried himself like a secret waiting to be uncovered. Thomas smiled when he spoke, but his eyes were guarded and measuring, as though he were always deciding what to say and what to keep.

Will should have walked away.

What began as curiosity deepened into something neither of them could control.

Thomas belonged to duty long before he belonged to Will, and the deeper they fell, the more their love threatened the life he had chosen.

As whispers of covert recruitment threaded through campus, doors closed and conversations lowered. Thomas was already part of that machinery, but when Will was drawn into a world of coded messages and private training, secrecy became his burden.

It became his survival.

Crimson is the beginning of the award-winning Of Shadows & Secrets series. It is the origin story of two men whose love begins at Harvard and will carry them through a life of secrets, espionage, and missions that demand everything.

Perfect for readers who love forbidden love, found family, spy romance, secret identities, slow-burn, and beautiful historical settings.

I love historical fiction stories that highlight gay men into the plot lines and narrative. This story was well written, with very strong characters that were realistic, including the second and third level characters. The dialog was very real, with witty responses back and forth between characters. Since is a lead up to the United States entering into World War II, the author did a excellent job of creating a serious atmosphere sprinkled with humor and love between Thomas and Will. The storyline places the reader right into the beginning of a series that will follow some of the characters into the depths of war. I also liked the fact that the author has provided lots of educational information on background about the lead up to the US involvement in the war, which only enhances the entire storyline. Thank you Casey for a first class story!

I went into this book with great expectations, not only because of its author but because it was the amalgamation of ALL of my favorite books set in my favorite time period. Now Casey (the author, naturally), had not let me down out of the ten published works of his young career (the career is young… HE is not). With every book he has gotten better and better. Now that is not to say that his writing was lacking in any way. As a matter of fact, most authors will end up in a slump or have a misstep usually in their sophomore publication.
The difference in his case is that his 2nd book was part of a series, each just as good, if not better. His next series, technically his 2nd book, expanded in to the field of campaign politics, followed by a murder mystery, etc., all of which were encased in the dual POV narrative of a M/M ❤️‍🔥 romance.
In a number of aspects, “Crimson” is no different, to a point. There is still the dual POV narrative at the heart of a M/M ❤️‍🔥 romance, but the similarities stop there. “Crimson” is the first in a series entitled, “Of Shadows & Secrets”, beginning at the onset of America’s entry in to the Second World War after the attack of Pearl Harbor.
Other than the intensity of the subject matter (Not that murder, HIV, grief, mental illness, homophobia aren’t serious topics, they were still housed in a rom-com story carrying the subject matter’s weight, but in a less heavy handed way), “Crimson” is 📕 written by an author who has matured in his craft. The language, the verbiage and descriptive text is above and beyond that of many bestselling writers of the day. “Crimson “ and hopefully the rest of the series are going to be books that readers of spy fiction and those of classic 🏳️‍🌈 fiction are going to still be reading, recommending and talking about in generations to come.
The transition within chapters and pages from two men falling in love (albeit in 1942, on a college campus with at least one in the military), to the humor of a group of collegiate friends, to the horrors of war then to a coming of age tale (and if interested, some inter dispersed, extra, separately accessible “sexually explicit scenes”, then the rigors of spy school, the thrill of clandestine practices deftly woven throughout these 40+ chapters.
I cannot begin to tell you how many times I had “OMG” & “OMFG” moments, putting down my Kindle, silently, giddily screaming, only to delve immediately back in to the this tale, not wanting to miss a moment.
Of course, like ALL of the author’s previous works, it’s the camaraderie of the characters (not just the MC’s) and how wonderfully they are created and put to the page that make every one of his 📚 such a joy to 📖.
I have yet to 📖 one of his books where I have not been fully invested in each one of his characters, remembering ALL of them by name (no lie) and their involvement in the stories these number of years later.
I was fortunate enough to have access to a beta copy of the 📕, but it was released when I was nearly 70% completed. So instead of finishing an earlier draft, I started all over again with published version, devouring it from the beginning, not in the least bit bored or experiencing that sense of having just read it. With really no changes, other than grammatical ones and typos, “Crimson” was JUST as fresh and JUST as wonderful as it was the days and week prior.
Clearly, I cannot recommend this 📕 enough. I am already anxiously awaiting the second in the series, the audiobook 🎧 should there be one and at some point (fingers crossed 🤞), the premiere (at some point) of the limited series on Amazon Prime Video or Netflix (to be followed by it’s own fan groups on Facebook and Instagram).
BUY, BUY, BUY this 📕, either online, at your local bookseller and/or request it from your local library (even in Texas and Florida).
Before I forget, this book has been thoroughly researched including annotated footnotes for clips from newspapers, speeches, documented information about weaponry, government organizations, etc., making this also in part, providing educational exposure to a VERY important part of our history (for all ages able to grasp the seriousness of war)…

The plot and characters of this book are vivid and compelling. The only complaint I have is that it is rife with small errors. There are a few typos and grammatical mistakes, but there are dozens and dozens of anachronisms. Most of them are slang and idioms that date from the 1950s or later, but a few are historical errors, like characters complaining about wartime rationing the year before it was instated. I look forward to seeing what happens in the rest of the series, but I hope the author improves the research. Historical fiction should be historical.

This is simply an excellent book, well researched, thoroughly documented, and very well written. The major characters are extremely well drawn and eminently likable. The setting, Harvard during the beginning of World War II, is a new one for me. Being a graduate of a different Ivy League school, I was vaguely familiar with how the colleges adapted to the war requirements; but it was fascinating to learn about that in greater detail.
The developing romance between the two main protagonists is also very sweetly handled, As I was in college during the Stonewall riots, and then working in an unwelcoming profession for an LGBT man, I knew very well what it was like to have to hide who I was. One cannot help but root for both Will and Thomas as they navigate the triple perils of their sexual orientation, the war, and their roles in the war.
I have already ordered the next two books in the series. Highly recommended.

Set during the World War II, this story follows two young men and their friends whose studies take an unexpected turn. Joining a spy training program, Will and Thomas discover each other and fall in love, at a time when homosexual relationships are strictly forbidden. They learn to navigate in secrecy.
We follow their development, their discovery of each other and their acceptance of their feelings and uncertain future.
A beautiful story, with extremely touching characters and very well written.

    ……. to these interesting characters.
I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
I wondered how the author would deal with the spicier aspects, given the period in which this is set. He deals with it cleverly and with due attention to how different things would have been from today.
It’s well written and never bores with too much extraneous detail.

Crimson should be the colour of Casey's cheeks, for I won't spare his blushes. This is an excellent book in so many ways. I love that it is both historical and hysterical, but also full of tension and discovery. But mostly, I love that it is a story of Love and friendship and honour. As a Brit, I learned a lot, too... Read this book. You will love it. And while there are blushes a plenty, anyone can read it, your sensibilities will not get too burned.

Great start to a series. This is a period piece taking place during WW2 when the USA decided to join. Book one tells the story of Will and Thomas who meet at Harvard and their training as they slowly fall in love in these unsafe times. I loved the group of friends and the excerpts from actual war documentation. This book sets up well for when these young men are deployed into the world they are trained for.
