"Wendy Leighton-Porter has another winner in The Shadow of Camelot, Book 6 in her time travel fantasy adventure series Shadows of the Past. Reluctant hero Max deserves a very special mention. Some (cats) are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them. Max definitely experiences the latter." FIONA INGRAM, author of The Chronicles of the Stone series

About the author

My books have won various awards over the past couple of years, including gold and silver medals in the Children's Literary Classics Book Awards 2018 and 2019, and a bronze in the Readers' Favorite Book Awards 2019. I have also been shortlisted twice in the Rubery Book Awards.
The Shadow of Atlantis is the first in a series of time-travel adventures, featuring 3 children and a magnificent Tonkinese cat called Max. The most recent title in the series is The Shadow of the Great Fire, set in mid-17th century London, and I'm now working on book number 18 - The Shadow of the Slave Ship.
As I take my young readers on a magical mystery tour through the past, I'm hoping that my love of history, myth and legend will rub off on them too. Personally, I'm enjoying the journey so much, I don't ever want it to end! Why not come along with me for the ride?

- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIf you have been following us for some time, you'll know that we are HUGE fans of Wendy Leighton-Porter's Shadows from the Past series. In each book, the heroes of the tale, Joe and Jemima Lancelot are pursuing their lost parents as they travel to historically relevant times or locations taking along with them their friend Charlie and their cat Max. In past books, they have traveled to Atlantis, ancient Greece, Troy, Egypt, and Italy. The beauty about each book is how the author brings alive the experiences of the people living in past times and places. Wendy Leighton-Porter does this so well. In The Shadow of Camelot, Leighton-Porter brings to life the legend of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, and the magical land of Camelot.
There has always been the question as to whether King Arthur and Camelot really did exist - were they real or are they legend? The author has managed to merge snippets from the legend of King Arthur (e.g., Guinevere, the wizard Merlin, the evil Morgana) with historically real people (e.g., Aelle, the brutal Saxon leader); real events (e.g., the Battle of Mount Baden); and real places (e.g., Bath) to create a spell-binding story for middle graders. Particularly amusing was the character of the French-speaking Sir Lancelot who just happens to share a name with our twins, Joe and Jemima Lancelot - making them distant relatives! I also enjoyed how the story speculates about the true origins of the mythical sword Excalibur. You'll have to read the book to find out!
I like how The Shadow of Camelot focused on more fully developing Max's character. In previous books, Max has always been a bit of a tag-along scaredy-cat (although he does rise to the occasion and has contributed significantly to the success of each of the previous quests). In this book, he is "the one" prophesized by Merlin the Wizard, to save Camelot:
"A Lion from the future will come to save the Bear,
Accompanied by children three, one dark, the others fair.
With coat of cream, eyes like the sea and points of mushroom-grey,
His noble heart will crush our foe; the Bear will win the day."
Max is able to conquer his fears and bravely go forth to fulfill the prophecy. I feel like this is an important development for his character and I can't wait to see how it plays out in future books with his newly found courage.
My Bottom Line:
The Shadow of Camelot is another adventure-filled, time-travel tale featuring the endearing trio of child heroes Joe, Jemima, and Charlie, along with their very special cat, Max, who become part of history as they travel to the mythical land of Camelot. It was a delight to read a story featuring some very famous characters such as King Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, Gawain, Merlin, and others, written specifically for a middle grade audience. And by this, I mean that there is no bad language, minimal violence (aside from the story of the Green Knight), and the plot is sufficiently complex to engage middle grade and reluctant readers. Another great read in this fantastic series that I can't stop raving about! I think girls and boys would equally like this book as it features both genders. Ages 8+

- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA talking book?! King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table has fallen off the book shelf in Uncle Richard's library. Twins, Joe and Jemima, read the book whilst their best friend Charlie is spending the day with his Dad. This book (#6 in the series) starts off similar to The Shadow of the Trojan Horse where Jemima read the book on Troy to learn more about the subjects and history of where they were headed next.
If you have never read any of this series, each book is a stand-alone story with a good intro as to why they children are traveling back in time to various places BUT I highly recommend you starting at the beginning and reading them in order. They are well worth it!
Joe and Jemima have a Tonkinese cat named Max who can talk! How? You'll have to read the book to find out. In this book Max is dreaming about Midnight and a pair of green eyes! What does his dream have to do with the adventure? Is Charlie related to the Green Knight? What did the Green Knight do and why is Gawain counting down the days in terror for when he will return?
Is Max a fulfillment of a prophecy to defeat the Saxons? Meet Merlin, King Arthur, Queen Guinevere, evil Morgana, Lancelot and more in this fun adventure back in time. Laugh at Max and Midnight's adventures into the Saxon camp and their meetings with Aelle, king of the Saxons. Cattus Britannicus? Hee Hee!
A fun story that will keep your 8 to 16 year olds intrigued and yearning for more. Well-written and we're off to read the next in the series now. Thanks, Liz
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAs a lover of the Ancient and Medieval Worlds, I love this series that travels to all of those. Along with their adventure back to Camelot, the three main characters—oops, sorry Max—four main characters, had me chuckling at their dismay when Arthur was picking names for his soon-to-be-famous sword. Won't spoil this for you. Wendy's knowledge of Saxon history is very evident in the details of this story. I'm thinking the Max the cat may have fallen in love in this story, but I'll let you decide that for yourself. A great read and a great adventure!

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis time the twins, Charlie and the mighty Max, the talking Tonkinese cat, are off to the mysterious world of Camelot to meet all the well-loved characters who inhabit this magical place of fiction… perhaps? Again, it is Max who is the hero, saving King Arthur from the Saxons, and rescuing the famous Excalibur sword from right under the very nose of the Saxon king, Aelle, who incidentally is frightened of cats - a bit of artistic licence thrown in here for good measure. What a gift Wendy Leighton-Porter has in these Shadows of the Past series of books. She is able to write history in a way that teaches, entertains and keeps the reader guessing right to the last page. A helpful Author’s Note gives serious thought. Was King Arthur just a mythical character of a real historical person?
Another very enjoyable read.
