New Life in New Cuba: It Ain't Over 'Til it's Over Kindle Edition
Humiliated once again, and certain she’s past her prime, she settles for her new reality when an envelope arrives containing documents of inheritance in New Cuba, along with a set of keys.
Years have passed since the campaign for the Humanitarian Liberation of Cuba took place. The once oppressed and impoverished country, renamed New Cuba, is now a thriving U. S. state.
Though there are a positive changes, certain aspects of the island go unpublicized, and many fear the truths hidden behind the sparkling promises advertised in the media.
Despite her family’s fearful objections, Carmen must decide if this is the sign she should follow, or wait around for her clock to run out.

About the author

This book has been brewing a long time. I was born in Cuba and moved to the U.S. with my parents when I was two, leaving our entire family behind. I grew up listening to stories about the country where I was born, and the family I never knew. Over the years, I traveled to Cuba many times to bring our family much needed medicine and food. I’ve seen and heard, firsthand, what happened to Cuba from the people still living there. My hope is that one day, things will be different for that beautiful island and its people.
Of all the jobs I’ve had, my favorite was teaching. Before I left the field, I was a National Board Certified Teacher of the gifted and taught first through fifth grades over the course of my career. In 2015, I took a sabbatical to take care of family. It wasn’t easy to leave my classroom. I even brought home all of my teaching equipment and the enormous children’s library I accumulated over so many years. I think I counted 57 boxes! My plan was to return the following year. That didn’t happen. I donated my teaching equipment to the school and my library to a local charity. Now, I spend time at home with my husband and dogs, Cassie and Ella, and we travel whenever we can.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI was looking for something new and different to read and this book came up as a #1 New Release. I did as I usually do, I read the synopsis. I have to admit it sounded more like a ‘what if’ thing with Cuba being free and becoming a state. Interesting. I have Cuban friends and can only imagine how they’d feel if this ever came to pass. I wasn’t sure about the “inheritance” part of the story. Then I scrolled down and read the reviews and thought I’d give it a chance. Am I glad I did! I couldn't put it down. The author did a great job of incorporating historical elements, romance and humor. The inheritance angle worked perfectly and just brought it all together. It’s hard when things fall apart and you have to pull yourself together and learn to trust. It sounds like there will be a follow up book. I’d like to read more about what happens in a future free Cuba.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book is a must read, that captivates and delights with humor, romance, tragedy and deceit. The story transports the reader to an island that was once lost to an oppressive regime and is slowly being transformed and renewed to its original beauty.
The author portrays and delves into the life of Carmen who has been beguiled and betrayed, finding it hard to believe and trust again and has embarked on a new unexpected event in her life, an inherited abandoned house in Cuba.
I absolutely loved the book, could not put it down and can’t wait for the sequel.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseMy mom recommended this book to me and I couldn't put it down. I loved Carmen and her story. There is a little bit for everyone in this book, mystery, romance, friendship, and humor. It will make you laugh, and make you smile, but most of all it will make you want to open a bottle of wine and share this book with friends!

- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis story has bit of everything. The main character sounds like someone I would know and be friends with.I connected with her right away. The descriptions were so vivid, I felt like I was seeing it all for myself. I’d love to go there and see Carmen’s place. Maybe one day Cuba will be free , and a place like this will exist.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2024Format: HardcoverThis was an interesting idea! A story about a future Cuba, free from tyranny and oppression, and it makes me wonder what would happen if that came to pass? This book has a little of everything, and the descriptions were so detailed I could visualize what a New Cuba might look like. There’s romance and mystery, and even a little humor. The story speaks to people who have lost their country, or who’ve had to start over when they’ve lost all hope. Anyone starting over later in life would appreciate this uplifting read.
Using historical elements, the author explores the ‘what if’s’ of a free Cuba, while weaving humor throughout the book. Struggling to overcome betrayals and find a place for herself in the world, the main character, Carmen, is compelled by family secrets to journey to New Cuba. Her family and friends warn her of the dangers there, but she’s at a crossroads, and decides to see for herself. Carmen has to work hard to not repeat the same mistakes and tries to be strong. She meets a bunch of interesting characters who all have their own stuff going on. It wasn’t long before she has to find a way to navigate their close knit community. I felt like I was one of Carmen’s friends by the end of the book.
I want more Carmen and Carlos, and the other characters. I hope there’s a continuation of the story since there’s a page that says ‘Stay Tuned…’ in the end. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2024Format: KindleNew Life in New Cuba is comprised of a bit of mystery, a little romance, suspense and a vulnerable, yet strong, female lead character whose adventures keep you intrigued. Very enjoyable and like the delicious flavors of good, (Cuban) home cooking, it keeps you wanting more.
