Sortilege Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars (5)

Em, divorced and thirty-something, moves back to her hometown. She’s surprised to find that Sortilege, an old novel (which has morphed considerably over the years), is now a thing with her friends. For example, beautiful Anna likes the soap opera version; artsy Robin wants to film the original.

Sortilege is a tongue-in-cheek gothic tale set in the distant past. It’s all about an ingenue held captive in a blighted manor by the sea, and the dashing Baron who sets out to rescue her. A Baron who finds himself ill-prepared for the realms of darkness and foul magic that await.

Meanwhile, Em’s modern journey involves the everyday adjustments and discoveries of her new life. The chaotic romantic entanglements of Em and her friends are explored in depth. A tragic event occurs, affecting everyone.

What with witches, acrobats, an underground sea, wild enchantments, tentative rambles, forbidden love, sudden death and manifest evil, the unforeseen will pop up in both tales, along with, now and then, a transformation.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"SORTILEGE, by Linda Gibson, is a spirited and well-conceived book containing two separate but related stories-one gothic romance, the other contemporary women's fiction. This cleverly-woven novel has something for everyone who likes female characters, the supernatural, romantic quests, and creative forms of colorful fiction." IndieReader
"An intricately crafted and gorgeously written inter-textual novel, Linda Gibson's Sortilege is a must-read for fans of hybrid works and metanarratives. Provocative, audacious, brainy, and strikingly playful, Gibson's splendid writing always informs the content of the novel, and her alliterative prose is a delight to read." Self-Publishing Review

I have had a rather long life,

so far.

I have travelled when I could,

which wasn’t often;

but I’ve moved around a lot,

with a fat Don Quixote

in my back pocket --

it was there,

wherever I sat down.

Here today is happiness.

In the N. Cal. hellscape,

the riots of 2020,

the political chaos,

the horrible pandemic:

Here today is happiness,

sharing the writings

of a lifetime,

at last,

with you,

along with (p.s.)

other fluff

and jabber

at my website

asmallpavillion.com.

Thank you.

In this brilliant first novel, author Linda Gibson gives you two stories for the price of one. A modern story intersects with a gothic one to treat the reader to an enchanting tale full of witches, dark spells, underground seas, and forbidden love. If you’re looking for a beautifully crafted, splendidly written book, this is it. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

I enjoyed the intertwining stories, characters and and the nonstop action. The author has a great sense of humor and a sense for human fobiles, both in the magical worlds she creates "today" and centuries ago.

Sortilege is a work driven by fascinating female characters. It is a modern story interwoven with a dark fairytale. Both storylines were a lot of fun to read. I highly recommend this book.
