Deputy While Immigrant: The Story of a German Who Became a Deputy Sheriff in Arizona Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars (21)

The incredible journey of a German immigrant, who came from the corporate world of business lunches and suit-and-tie dress code, to experiencing 9/11 shortly after arrival in his new home country. Then destiny flung him to the far southwestern corner of the United States, where he became a Deputy Sheriff at the age of 41.

In this autobiography, Peine takes the reader on a virtual ride-along, chronicling his life on the beat, later as detective, and finally as official spokesperson for the department. This book offers the author’s unique experience of American police culture through the eyes of a European immigrant. It subjects the reader to an unfiltered look at life in and around Tucson, AZ from 2006 to 2015.

It’s not all gun slinging, however, but rather a recollection and reflection on his time as a peace officer with the department that once had Wyatt Earp among its members.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The strength of the book lies in Peine's ability to tell a good story, completely wrapping one up in the safety concerns of each traffic stop and the adrenaline surges of each chase. (...) Readers who look for a good laugh, a good cry, and lots of "there I was when ..." stories will very much enjoy this memoir." - Melonie Kennedy (Reedsy Discovery)

From the Author

When I began my journey as a deputy sheriff in Arizona, I could never have imagined it would one day inspire a book. Deputy While Immigrant isn't just a memoir—it's a deeply personal exploration of resilience, cultural adaptation, and the pursuit of justice. Writing this book allowed me to share my unique perspective as a German emigrant navigating the challenges and triumphs of law enforcement in America.

Through these stories, I aim to take readers beyond the badge to the human side of policing, where courage meets vulnerability and every decision shapes lives. I also hope to offer a window into the immigrant experience: the struggles, victories, and unrelenting drive to build a meaningful life in a foreign land.

Whether you're intrigued by tales of personal growth, curious about the realities of law enforcement, or simply seeking an inspiring story about overcoming the odds, this book is for you.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. Your interest and support mean the world to me.

Born and raised in Germany, Tom Peine began his career in the finance industry, armed with a German education in banking. His life took a turn when he met his second wife, a natural-born American citizen, and emigrated to the United States at the age of 36.

Trading his suit and tie for a badge and uniform, Tom embarked on an unexpected journey into law enforcement, becoming a Deputy Sheriff in Pima County, AZ, just shy of his 41st birthday. His nearly ten-year tenure in the force was marked by a myriad of experiences, from life on the beat to detective work and serving as the official spokesperson for the department.

Tom's unique journey didn't stop there. He and his wife moved to Oregon and later temporarily returned to Germany, where he worked as a strategic outreach specialist for the U.S. Army’s 7th Army Training Command. They returned home to the United States in 2020.

Now, Tom is sharing his extraordinary journey in his memoir, "Deputy While Immigrant," offering readers an unfiltered look at American police culture through the eyes of a European immigrant

This is an absorbing account of policing in America from the point of view of an immigrant. Peine hoped to become a law enforcement officer in his native Germany, but that dream was derailed. When he had another chance to be a police officer, many years later in a wildly different environment, he jumped at the chance. The author describes his training and his time on the job, offering sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant, but always honest accounts of his experiences. The reader can better understand the risks of policing, the high standards officers hold themselves to, and the trust they put in each other.

I have the opportunity to read this book and could not put it down. It took me less than four days to read it, and I thoroughly enjoyed feeling immersed into the life of a deputy in a law-enforcement career. I had the privilege of knowing the author, and working closely with him. This book gives a realistic picture of the rewards as well as struggles for law-enforcement not only here in Pima county, but across the country I highly recommend the book so that we as a community can understand law enforcement better.

Tom Peine immigrated from Germany to the United States in his mid thirties. As a young man, he was interested in a law enforcement career in Germany. A health glitch disqualified him and he moved along. He married an American and arrived here on 9/11/2001. This part of the bok is quite good, especially what led him to immigrate and his observation d of 9/11.
At 41 years of age, living in the Tuscon, Arizona area, he decided to once again pursue his law enforcement dream. The Pima County Sheriff's Department was recruiting Deputy Sheriffs and did not have an upper age limit.
What follows is typical of this genre. First the shock of a high stress/ paramilitary police academy with a high attrition rate. Then to field training, also taken quite seriously.
Unlike many California Sheriff Departments, deputies in Pina County went straight to patrol without an apprenticeship as correction deputies.
Prime is assigned to a rural patrol district where backup can be problematic. He is very conscious of officer safety issues. He patrols in two districts and we experience vignettes of his patrol officer career. Unfortunately, his career isn't terribly interesting or he doesn't describe his experiences in a vivid manner.
Eventually Prime transfers to investigations assigned to fraud and later sexual assault and child abuse. His observations about the trauma suffered by sexualal assault victims are quite good. He finishes his career in Public Affairs. This book would have been more interesting had the author described more cross cultural experiences.

It is one thing to read a book about law enforcement from someone who has grown up in the United States, but it is another to read it from an immigrant who joined the law enforcement ranks after living his life in Germany. This was a great, and entertaining read, from someone who left the comfort of their home country and joined the ranks of a profession in the United States that is honorable, yet can be very dangerous. Great job.

This book was written from the heart. It does a great job of following the trials and tribulations of the author in his life and career journey after moving to the U.S. It was an enjoyable read!

A good human interest story and interesting perspective from a German born citizen of our law enforcement. It also highlighted unique aspects of Tuscon, Arizona’s policing environment.

Coming from a law enforcement background, 7 years of it as a Deputy Sheriff, I was looking forward to reading this book. And I am very happy that I did get approved for a copy by NetGalley, as it was a very good read.
The author came from Germany as an account manager, he really must have had a midlife crisis, as he did not become a law enforcement officer until he was already 40 years old! Honestly, to go through a police academy in your 20's is a physical challenge, but to do it at age 40 is crazy (?), hard, and very commendable. Hired on by the Pima County Sheriffs Department, he brings the maturity and thoughtfulness that an Officer should have.
Peine is also an excellent writer. You can feel yourself in the patrol car with him, at incident scenes with him, and afterwards at home with him. He vividly describes scenes, emotions, and situations he experienced. And, rare in this type of book, he does not come across as trying to be a Superman/John Wayne type. He's a real person, full of real emotions and doubts and opinions. And he is secure enough to show that he was not always right, that, like a real Officer, there were plenty of times he messed up (and was told so by supervisors, which was probably not easy to take at that age).
This is a good, honest look at a career in law enforcement. People wanting to go into the field would be well served to sit down and read it. It would help prepare them well. As well as people who have a distrust of the police, it would help disabuse them of the opinion that Officer's are all bad.
It's just a really good book! Best of luck to the author!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I read in the last 5 years: A German immigrant who became a Deputy in the US

By chance I came across the book "Deputy while immigrant" and read it in two days. Tom Peine was born in Germany, has a background in banking - and was in New York 9/11/01. Luckily, he escaped the mayhem. After some job-stopovers, he pondered about buying a Harley but ended up with the Pima County Sheriff's Department Training Academy in Pima County, Arizona. He graduated and became a Deputy. From the deserts to the snow-covered mountain, he had to operate in all environments.

He was a cop with the heart on the right place.
He helped his community by building trust and acceptance.
He fought against villains and arrested them.
No matter, what duties he was called upon - he just did his job.

    His five lessons learned are:

    - Excellent (police) training saves lives.
    - Cops have (like journalists) access to the raw data - don't judge from your cozy sofa.
    - Always think about your actions, don't loose your temper.
    - Respect everyone.
    - Value every minute, every day, b/c your life can change within the blink of an eye.

And never forget: Cops bring chaos back into control.

Then he became a Press and Information Officer and retired due to family reasons. And now he has some new projects in mind. A real hero.

If you need a blueprint for motivation, just buy it.
