Review
In Clemmy Gets a Sister by Caroline Crocker, Clemmy, the English Bulldog, loved being the center of her humans' attention. A duck with a duckling following her waddled through the yard, through the house, and to the swimming pool. When the mother duck waddled away, she left her duckling alone in the pool. Clemmy's humans take good care of Peep, the duckling, much to Clemmy's displeasure. Peep quickly became part of the family and seemed to get more attention than Clemmy liked. How long would Peep be around? How many time-outs would Clemmy get for chasing the duckling around the house? How would Clemmy fare if Peep wasn't there anymore?
I thoroughly enjoyed Clemmy Gets a Sister! This adorable story gives an amazing view of what introducing a new pet into the family looks like, no matter how temporary or permanent the stay is. The way Caroline Crocker conveys Clemmy's ideas and responses makes this picture book very hard to put down, even for an adult! I love how Clemmy can't seem to decide if the addition of Peep is good or bad for her relationship with her humans. The pictures of Clemmy and Peep in such natural settings add extra fun and flair to the story. I recommend Clemmy Gets A Sister to young children who love a realistic tale of how animals interact and enjoy an interesting point of view. Crocker is an amazing writer who will undoubtedly keep kids entertained for many years to come!

About the author

I’m an immigrant born to an immigrant and on for generations. That wanderlust rubbed off. My parents are Dutch, but I’ve lived in Canada, Iowa, England, California, Texas and Virginia. To keep it interesting, my British husband and I adopted a Bulgarian!
My career has been equally varied. I trained as a scientist: microbiology and immunology. Then I worked in medical research before teaching cell biology, microbiology, and more at a couple of colleges in VA. After a brief stint as a movie star (seriously!), I founded a nonprofit and learned about websites, newsletters, blogs, and speaking. That wasn’t enough of learning new things, so I started a company and took on the dubious pleasures of negotiating with lawyers, writing patents, and finding investors.
And now? I'm doing what I love. Enjoying my eight grandchildren, gardening, and writing books. Adult books, big kid books, little kid books, and even a book on doing microbiology in your kitchen. Nonfiction written like fiction.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2025Format: HardcoverThis is a surprisingly good story. Just a child’s need so often. A Duck enters Clemmy’s family, and provokes the rivalry so common in families. We see the story unfold - great illustrations, btw. We learn how to deal with it. A very practical addition to your book pile as you read to your young children, or as they begin to read for themselves.
