About the author

I retired in 2013, telling my wife I wanted to write a book. Then I didn't even try. In December 2022 we had just returned from her brother's funeral and I wrote a poem for my sister-in-law titled The Empty Chair. My wife and she were both very moved by it and said I should think about writing. When I said "Some day" my wife reminded me that tomorrow isn't guaranteed, and life is too short to keep saying someday. She said either stop talking about it or sit down and do it.
That's when I started writing, beginning with a Memoir, thinking it best to start with a topic I knew something about. Then the whole Covid controversy came into my head, and I had to get it down on paper (in a Word doc.), so I wrote The Year of the Rat. While writing "Rat" I had an idea for a Private Investigator that failed as a cop but was able to stumble over significant cases and have big wins and I began writing my Blake Franklin Investigations series in January. The first one was finished three weeks later, and the ideas kept coming into my head. I either had to write or suffer an overload of words in my head. Blake Franklin is a manifestation of the failures and setbacks in my life, feeling like I always wanted to do more, have a greater impact, and help more people realize their dreams. Like Blake, I always believe the "good guys" should win. They should never finish last and they certainly should not lose the girl to the bad boys.
This poem is the one that started my writing career. I hope readers will enjoy it and love the characters my mind has brought to life.
The Empty Chair
Doing common things in town and at home
Simply because I’m now really on my own
Grocery store runs, and filling the car with gas
Dry cleaners, bakery, or other daily tasks
May seem to others like an ordinary feat
But they don’t talk to the empty seat.
Walks on a beach where once two shadows
Connected hands, pants rolled, in the shallows
Concerts, movies, restaurants, bars
Sitting on the front porch, or riding in a car
So many friends that we use to go meet
Have no words to fill the empty seat.
The comfort I find in words written in red
When sleep eludes me as I lay in my bed
I open the cover of His well-worn Book
Looking for answers for all He took
I thank God for those who still surround me
My daughter, her children their love will ground me
Taking on challenges never before attempted
My love, my helper, his lifetime preempted.
My sister and brother and those who live far
Their love unconditionally helps heal the scar
Of losing the one who made us complete
Family gallantly trying to fill the empty seat.
A wound so fresh time has yet to overcome
Eventually all stages of grief, one by one
Will weigh on my shoulders until they depart
Having hurt and healed my broken heart
With God and my family, I know I’ll defeat
The pain I associate with the empty seat.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFive Will Get You Ten by Ryan Hale is a gripping page-turner that kept me hooked from start to finish. Blake Franklin is a fantastic lead—smart, tough, and determined to protect his clients no matter the cost. The plot kicks off quickly, with a criminal mastermind targeting celebrities, and the tension just builds from there. The addition of a team of former Navy SEALs was a great touch, adding layers of teamwork and strategy that made the action scenes even more exciting.
One thing I really appreciated was how the characters felt real, especially Blake. He's not just a tough guy; he has a thoughtful side that makes him more relatable. The supporting cast added humor and depth to the story, and the twists kept me guessing. While I thought the final confrontation could’ve had a bit more tension, the book was so packed with suspense and surprises that I didn’t mind. If you’re into fast-paced thrillers with strong characters and a plot that keeps you on edge, Five Will Get You Ten is definitely worth picking up!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseRyan Hale delivers another thrilling installment with FIVE WILL GET YOU TEN. This time, Franklin Investigations takes center stage in the world of celebrity protection and high-profile security. If you enjoyed the shootouts in TWO FOR THE SHOW, you’ll find that FIVE raises the stakes even higher. What makes this book pivotal in the series is how Blake Franklin and his team are pushed to their limits and forced to step up in every way to safeguard their clients. Packed with action, suspense, and just the right dose of stress, this story is as entertaining as it is intense. Sports fans, adventure seekers, and mystery lovers alike will find plenty to enjoy in FIVE WILL GET YOU TEN.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2024Format: KindleWhen Blake Franklin's celebrity clients are targeted by a mysterious group of kidnappers, he and his team need to track down the mastermind behind the plot before it's too late.
A fast moving thriller full of action sequences and some memorable characters. I feel that the final encounter was resolved too easily and could've benefited from some additional tension but other than that I found this to be an enjoyable read
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFive Will Get You Ten by Ryan Hale is book five of The Blake Franklin Investigations series. It is well-written, highly imaginative, intense, and entertaining, and it has its twists. I found myself clinging to the pages anticipating what was to come next. The storyline is captivating. The characters are developed well and easy to follow. The pacing of the book is good. Overall, I found this book to be a good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI read this as a stand-alone as I didn't read the first four in the series. However, this made me want to go back and read the others. I'm now invested in Blake. I enjoyed the premise of this book - a villain with no regard for human life specifically targeting Blake's clients.
I won't give away spoilers but this kept me engaged and turning the pages until the thrilling end!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI keep saying this, but it's true. This series keeps getting better and better. Blake Franklin is great, but the supporting characters around him make the book so much more interesting. I do appreciate the spiritual aspect they sneak in! It's good to read a good book that I don't feel guilty about.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have read several of Ryan Hale's books. The Blake Franklin series is another example of his diverse talent. In this series the reader gets a front row seat of the action packed days of these investigators as they provide security for high profile clients. To borrow the author's play on numbers, Five Will Get You Ten deserves a "Five Star" rating.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFast-paced and well-written, it's a gripping story that gets you hooked in the first few pages and doesn't let go!

S SaywackReviewed in the United Kingdom on September 5, 20245.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt is another enjoyable outing from the Blake Franklin Investigation series. This book, like the others, is well-written, very accessible, and something of a page-turner. The story flows smoothly, the plot is intricate and it will please those who like a good detective mystery. There is some violence but within the context of the storyline. Like the others in the series I read, I found this novel compelling and tense.
