Als Dottie ihrem neuen Verehrer, Gervase Parfitt, aufgrund seines schrecklichen Verhaltens den Laufpass gibt, ahnt sie nicht, dass sie ihn schon bald anflehen wird, sie zurückzunehmen, nur damit sie ihrer alten Flamme, Inspector William Hardy, bei dessen Ermittlung helfen kann.

Gervase mag aufgeblasen und irritierend sein, aber er ist doch nicht wirklich BÖSE, oder? Dottie kann kaum glauben, was man ihr erzählt. Aber als sie einige der Menschen trifft, denen er Unrecht getan hat, ist sie fest entschlossen, dafür zu sorgen, dass der Gerechtigkeit Genüge getan wird.

Mrs. Sedgworth wusste, dass sie die richtige Person angerufen hatte. Sie warf einen Blick über die Schulter, um sich zu vergewissern, dass sie allein war, und sagte dann mit gesenkter Stimme: „Bitte helfen Sie mir, Mr. Parfitt. Ich hatte einen Unfall mit meinem Auto. Ich habe jemanden angefahren. Ich glaube, er könnte tot sein.“

Mrs. Sedgworth trat vor das Bauernhaus, nachdem sie sich bei der Frau für ihre Freundlichkeit bedankt und ihr einen Zehn-Schilling-Schein in die Hand gedrückt hatte. Sie wartete. Sie zog ihren Mantel eng um sich und wünschte, sie trüge festere Schuhe; ihre Füße waren taub vor Kälte. Ihr Atem trübte die Luft vor ihrem Gesicht. Näher konnte sie nicht an das Auto herankommen. Sie konnte gerade noch die dunkle Silhouette des Wagens auf der Fahrbahn erkennen, aber sich näher heranwagen, das konnte sie nicht. Den Mann dort liegen zu sehen...

Parfitt war in weniger als einer Viertelstunde bei ihr. Seine ruhige Art und sein sanftes Verständnis beruhigten sie. Schuldbewusst stellte sie fest, dass sie ihn in der Vergangenheit eher gemieden hatte, aber in einer Krise war er eindeutig bewundernswert. Sie nahm sich vor, ihn nach diesem schrecklichen Abend unbedingt zu ihrer nächsten Dinnerparty einzuladen.

„Oh, Mr. Parfitt, ist es zu spät? Ist es furchtbar? Er kam aus dem Nichts, ich wusste nicht, was ich tun sollte, oder wohin ich mich wenden sollte.“
Er lächelte sie ernsthaft an. „Na, na, Mrs. Sedgworth“, sagte er und roch sofort den Alkohol in ihrem Atem. „Machen Sie sich keine Sorgen, Ma'am. Leider passieren solche Dinge ab und zu, niemand kann etwas dafür, eine dunkle Gasse, spät in der Nacht. Das war zu erwarten.“
„Und ist er wirklich...?“

„Überlassen Sie es einfach mir, meine liebe Mrs. Sedgworth. Versuchen Sie, nicht daran zu denken.“

„Oh, es ist einfach schrecklich! Was soll ich nur meinem Mann sagen, wenn er nächste Woche nach Hause kommt? Und was ist mit der Polizei?“ Dieser plötzliche Gedanke beunruhigte sie. Sie klammerte sich an Gervases Jacke. „Ich kann nicht ins Gefängnis gehen! Ich kann einfach nicht!“ Ihre Stimme erhob sich in Panik.

Er kämpfte gegen den Drang an, sie zu ohrfeigen, und sagte mit einem weiteren für ihn so typischen ernsten Lächeln: „Meine liebe Mrs. Sedgworth, überlassen Sie das alles mir. Ich bin schließlich die Polizei. Und ich weiß, dass Sie nicht gewollt haben, dass das passiert. Überlassen Sie einfach alles mir, und ich verspreche Ihnen, niemand wird je ein Wort von mir hören. Es gibt keinen Grund zur Sorge.“

„Oh, Mr. Parfitt, Sie sind so nett”, sagte sie und begann zu weinen.

Caron lives in Derbyshire, England, where Jane Austen's Mr Darcy came from. She hasn't met him yet, but nevertheless clings to the dream. She writes mysteries and crime but sometimes adds in a little dash of romance or fantasy.

Like many writers, Caron always wanted to write stories. She can remember announcing this to her mother when she was eight years old. Caron says, ‘I seem to remember she wasn't overly impressed.’

Caron started reading adventure stories and mysteries for children when she was around 7 or 8 and graduated to Agatha Christie and Patricia Wentworth (her faves) when around 9 or 10. She has never looked back.

Caron has tried writing literary fiction – she was terrible at it. She has tried writing romance but got bored and killed everyone off. So now she sticks to what she loves - murder mysteries. The Dottie Manderson mysteries are set in the 1930s and feature a terminally-nosy well-to-do young woman, the Miss Gascoigne mysteries are set in the 1960s and a spin-off from the Dottie books, and the Friendship Can Be Murder series are set 'now' and written as diary entries by a posh woman, Cressida Barker-Powell, who plans to make the world a better place by getting rid of bad people, starting with her mother-in-law.
