HONORABLE MENTION IN 2023 NEW YORK BOOK FEST
Treasures in Trauma
In the summer of 2004, Elaine Yarbrough thought life couldn’t get any better. She and her husband Mike were doing the work they loved developing the human side of organizations worldwide. Their 20-year-old daughter, Lindsay, had just returned from college for a family kayak trip on the Salmon River in Idaho. This vacation, however, would change their lives.
What started with a fall into six inches of water led to Mike’s stroke further downstream and a heart-stopping race out of the river. Mike spent much of the next two and a half months in rehabilitation to create new brain pathways and re-learn how to eat, walk, and remember. On the day of Mike’s release home, Elaine was met with excitement and joy, and at the same time, trepidation replacing the work of many nurses. She was thrown back into whitewater to churn, survive, and eventually thrive as she began appreciating an imperfect life.
Often faced with adversity, Elaine shares stories of perseverance with vivid candor, and reflects on the experiences that shaped her. She grew up in a 700-square-foot house in Waco, Texas, with a large, eccentric cast of characters. Her dad was homeless by age 11 after witnessing his mother murdered by his stepfather. Elaine’s academic prowess, from valedictorian to doctorate, became her ticket out.
In 1975, while teaching a consortium for public officials a beautiful relationship blossomed in the Big Easy, Elaine met Mike Burr from Houston, a Burt Reynolds lookalike. A move to Boulder, marriage, and a baby girl soon followed. Mike joined Elaine’s company in 1990 and the dynamic duo traveled the world co-consulting organizational development in places like Switzerland and eastern Europe. From there, Elaine describes her devastation of losing so much of their life together after Mike’s stroke.
Treasures in Trauma chronicles the exploration of love when your partner is not the same in mind and body. Elaine recounts her struggle to balance hope and reality, maintaining self and supporting her husband, encouraging Mike and letting him find his own way. She details her deepened Quaker faith and community of caring people—friends, family, strangers—who became a soothing balm of recovery once she learned to embrace help. In juggling caregiver and career to the frightening early days of stroke recovery, fire, flood, and breast cancer, Elaine brings us deep inside a passage through trauma to transformation.
It can be difficult to see fertile terrain beyond grief and sadness. By waiting, listening, noticing, and healing the mind, body, and spirit, treasures and truths slowly reveal themselves. In sharing her family’s journey so openly, Elaine aims to help those hurting find a way through.

"I loved the book so much that I was disappointed when I finished it. The way Elaine and Lindsay described their personal memories made it so real to me. I could feel the emotions, the fear. I couldn't breathe. Crying throughout the book at the pain, the fear, the wonderful friends and kind actions, the wisdom beautifully expressed. I resonated with 'A life reflected and affirmed is an amazing gift. Being seen is a fundamental elixir for well-being and wholeness.'"

"Your book wanted no part of my putting it aside to read later. Now! You must read it now! You dared to ask yourself important questions while you were trying to navigate through rough territory in stormy weather. I believe that will help readers ask themselves challenging questions when they're going through something difficult. You are an inspiring role model, both professionally and personally. You didn't hold back: the traumas-upon-traumas you experienced without being melodramatic, what you had to do to let go of every phase of the journey, what new skill and/or truth you had to learn, what worked and what didn't work, what helped and what didn't help. Thank you.

"Wow! This profound book does not disappoint. Treasures in Traumas reveals a personal path in navigating the whitewater perils in a real and metaphorical life journey, where 'what else could happen?' travails are just around the bend. The book is thoroughly engaging right from the get-go. I read it in one weekend. With wit and brevity in style, Elaine's deep introspection and gems of life lessons are offered. I was awed and inspired. It's a must-read!'

"In Treasures in Trauma, Elaine brings her extraordinary abilities to bear as she shares her and her family's stories candidly, teaching us that ".... becoming whole means cooking wounds into wisdom to avoid bitterness." Readers will be swept into these stories like a series of white-water rapids and then treated to the calm waters of the wisdom gained down river when Elaine shares lessons learned as she moves into the Fourth Chapter of life from the survival to the sacred dance. This is truly a journey worth reading and re-reading."

About the author

Elaine Yarbrough grew up in Texas, coming from a long line of pioneer women. Through education and risk taking, she followed her dreams to graduate school at the University of Kansas and then to Boulder where she taught communication at the University of Colorado from 1975 – 1982. There she received every teaching award given by students and faculty and a hard fought ‘honorary degree’ in navigating a sexist environment. After leaving the university, she started her own business in organizational development, The Yarbrough Group, ultimately working alongside her husband Mike Burr in more than forty countries. Her daughter, Lindsay Y. Burr, is now CEO of the family company. Elaine’s first books focused on her professional work. This is the first illuminating her personal growth through hardship. Daughter Lindsay and granddaughter Zora live in Washington DC. Elaine, Mike, and dogs Daisy and Jenna, live north of Boulder at the foot of the Rocky Mountains.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWhen you reach the point in your life when you say to yourself "I don't think I have another day in me!" Pick up this book and by the time you put it down you will have been laughing, crying, and in awe of the courage that life requires of us in surprising ways. I've known Elaine for most of this time but even I was amazed at how much the whole family had to overcome and pull together to come to the present in one functional family unit. The first part was so fast paced I felt a bit out of breath and wondering what was going to happen next, but Elaine is such a whip smart and deep thinker (as consultants can be) that the second part really makes clear how you have to process what you are learning along the way, whether from personalities, polarities, conflict, assertiveness, love and tenacity for your family. She speaks of converting what started out as some rather unhealthy masculine traits into the positive traits of speaking the truth and then ultimately telling the truth with compassion and wisdom for yourself as well. I read and finished the book in one night and morning- -the first time I've done that in years. To arrive at a place of grace, love, and spiritual peace with her is just awesome and you realize you really DO have one more day in you!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseTreasures in Trauma is a rare combination of a personal story and a series of lessons filled with broad insight and wisdom. In sharing her journey of the past 19 years, through "whitewater, stroke, cancer, fires and floods", we can learn how to navigate and survive the challenges and traumas life inevitably throws at us. As a fellow breast cancer survivor, mother and wife, and a whitewater rafter I connected on many level with Elaine's stories and experiences. Hearing the challenges she faced in finding a new normal, and the emotional impact during this journey, I found new ways of thinking about the life events I have faced. Elaine is funny, reflective, direct, and so very human. Her wisdom and insights have impacted me greatly. This is a book I will come back to again and again, as my life changes and the unexpected occurs in my journey.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThere are some people who are damaged as a result of trauma, Elaine was made more resilient, stronger, more wise, and managed to retain her sense of humor. As a caregiver for my husband (now gone), I related to the worries, the angst, the frustration, and the questions "Am I enough?" and "What about me?" This book brought me to tears and made me laugh. This book is a gift to those of us who have been challenged with seemingly overwhelming life tasks. There is always hope, help, and grace in the middle of the chaos. Thank you Elaine for reminding your readers that we are enough!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI mostly read news and topical books. Occasionally i throw in some action fiction. What attracted me to this book initially was the cover! Who wouldn't like to think of themselves neck deep in remote whitewater?
However, what kept me to the end were her unabashed revelations about her life, very personal experiences, and wisdom. Not the guru from the mountaintop wisdom; rather, much more basic wisdom about what works in this life and why. I have read biographical books where the author talked frankly about their nitty-gritty life details. However, most of those offer little that is truly useful. Titillating maybe; but rarely useful. Her experiences are open, unvarnished and valuable!
I would be interesting to know more about her life both before and since the events described in the book. But, I'll take what I was given! Great read, thank you.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI like true-life stories about people coming through big challenges that lead us to think about how we react to our own challenges. Yarbrough’s book is a compelling read not only because of the events she describes, but also because it is a truthful telling of her reactions—negative and positive–over time. She does not prescribe how to survive and thrive, but her description of her journey illuminates how one can have hope within the reality of terrible events. As described in the book, her personal history speaks to a lot of internal strength. But as she faces a Job-like series of traumatic events, she also relies on the strengths and support of others, and on her own drive to extract meaning from her life experiences. She includes quotes, ideas, and lessons she has found helpful, and important descriptions from her daughter about the initial trauma that occurred. I would have liked to hear even more from key individuals involved in her journey. Nevertheless, many opportunities for a reader to reflect about their own challenges and resilience are here already.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI bought this book as I know the author and her family and had heard of many of the traumas and life hurdles over the years and wanted to read the full story. Although I was familiar with the specifics of the stroke, fire, breast cancer and flood, I was amazed by the depth of the drama that had uprooted their lives, spinning them onto a total different course (white water pun intended here). Reading about the rafting and the ordeal of getting Mike off the water and to competent medical care was harrowing, and my heart rate responded as if I were there. I enjoyed the many quotes and the author’s personal commentary on her strengths and foibles throughout the many trials that befell her. I will recommend this book to many folks, but maybe not to someone who has PTSD, anxiety or depression related to their own chaotic, stressful life experiences. But then again, maybe they would be just the person who might benefit from this absorbing, well-written memoir.
