THE BEST KEPT SECRETS

Durango's production manager, Miranda Jenks is straightforward and honest. She deals with life head-on no matter what it brings, and she's not afraid to speak her mind. But... she's been harboring a soul-destroying secret for years, and when Ross Ellis returns to town to try to clean up his mess, she can't tell him the truth.

Ross has made more mistakes than he can count, and all of them are worse than horrible. The only reason he's bothered to come back to his farm is for his teenage daughter, and he hopes like hell she'll let him make amends.

Miranda is the last person he'd thought would forgive him, and as they spend more time together he finds they fill each other's gaps. Until he uncovers the lies she's been keeping for years.

Two lonely people who understand each other better than most must find a way to heal the breach or they'll never get to the happy they're reaching for.

Author of over fifty romance novels, Emily Mims loves to write! A former teacher turned romance author wrote her first book on a dare. She loves to write about what she knows, whether it's the Hill Country of Texas (The Texas Hill Country series), old-timey bluegrass and Appalachian music (The Smoky Blue series), community theater (The Durango Street Theatre series), or the brave and daring soldiers of the United States Army (Bear's Brigade). The mother of two sons, she and her husband Charles live in Texas but travel frequently to visit family. For relaxation she plays the piano, organ, dulcimer, and ukulele. She says, "I love to write romances because I believe in them. Romance happened to me and it can happen to any woman-if she'll just let it."

A romance story surrounding the relationship and lives of Miranda Jenks, a stalwart woman grieving the loss of her son Tommy, as well as her best friend Renee, and Ross Ellis, a man on a life path of making right his wrongs from the past with daughter Emma, and all of this leading to the truth about the death of his wife Renee!
I enjoyed this book. It was a page turner for me. It kept my interest and I was always wanting to know what would happen next. The setting transported me to the San Antonio area with its sights and sounds of the food, expressway, Alamodome, as well as it’s smallneighboring towns of Pleasantville Floresville.
Ms Mims style of writing kept me thoroughly engaged in the story. I enjoyed the backdrops she highlights in her book of the theater, the farm lands, and especially her gutsy portrayal of lives, loves and family issues as they relate in the disease of alcoholism. She covered many aspects of it. I would liked to have seen mentioned the Al-Anon recovery program that helps family and friends affected by alcoholism as well. The process of making amends in recovery includes not harming the person receiving the amends. Ms Mims came through as usual and the process happened in a realistic way.
Her story was intelligent and fast paced. It was very realistic in how the characters behaviors and actions were portrayed. They were real. Like everyday people. As the reader it gave me a real sense of the push and pull as a couple going through their recovery experiences. Having real physical attraction to one another and yet making their sobriety the center of their lasting love and relationship.

I have loved the entire series, and I was eager to read about Miranda. I wondered what her secret would be.

Not all of life is pretty. Most people have problems in our lives. Some people read romances to escape from their problems. Others want heroes and heroines with normal flaws and hickeys. Miranda and Ross are normal people, who for whatever reason, became broken at some point in their lives, and are now striving to get on with living despite those old breaks.

Emily Mims is never afraid to tackle difficult subjects. Her books have dealt with spousal abuse, child abuse, post traumatic stress disorder, age differences, and homosexuality. She is unafraid to tackle any life situation. This was no different. Like her other books I have read, this one was equally uplifting.

Miranda is a recovering alcoholic with almost 8 years sobriety at the beginning of the book. Ross, the widower of her deceased best friend, returns to town with nine months sobriety. Mims delineates the stresses for both of maintaining their sobriety during some difficult days as they fall in love and then Miranda's big secret is revealed.

I found myself unable to put the book down. Mims dealt with the subjects with tact, discretion, and yet open honesty. Coming from a family riddled with alcoholics, I was impressed at her grasp of the subject and the manner in which she handled alcoholism in a story about two people in recovery who struggle to maintain their sobriety through some extremely trying situations.

I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

The characters in this book are flawed and complicated. The problems they face are not the usual easily fixed or superficial problems you often find in romance, they are real issues. I prefer to read stories about flawed and real characters and this book delivers on that.

This is the first Durango book I've read, and it's wonderful to know there are at least six more. As someone who's struggled most of his life with a ruinous craving for carbs, Emily Mims inspired me to do better through her compassionate but unflinching account of a couple finding love by overcoming an addiction to booze. That may sound grim. Actually, the story is beautiful. Thanks, Emily.

This is the first Emily Mims story that I have read. I loved learning about Miranda and Ross, who both suffered items in their past that left them dealing with grief and loss among other things. I loved the characters, and the pace was perfect. I suspect that Mims way of tackling difficult subjects in her writings with compassion and honesty carry over into all of the novels in this series. I can’t wait to find out.

I just loved this book. It was so well-written that it captured my mind, and I was dragged along for the ride. Once I started reading, I could not put it down until I read the last page.
