A brilliant, highly engrossing police procedural...
Veteran police detective Mike Hegan investigates a murder-suicide as hestruggles to come to terms with a personal loss in Panettiere's latestwell-crafted police procedural. When a champion thoroughbred racehorsecollapses and dies in mysterious circumstances after finishing last in a race while his trainer goes missing and is later found dead miles awayon a suburban beach, Detective Mike Hegan knows a crucial link ismissing in the case. While the police rule the case as a murder-suicide, Hegan sets on to search for the truth on his own and finds himselfentangled in a deadly game of deception and revenge. The pace of thebook is smooth and the prose elegant, but it's characterization at which Panettiere truly excels. All the characters, including major andancillary, are sketched with utmost precision and come alive in thereader's mind. Hegan's police career is at a low ebb following hisinjury in a shooting incident and his ongoing discord with hisbrother-in-law, and his unhappy personal life (with the loss of hisfiancé) makes it even harder to bear. Lucy doesn't get much space in the book but succeeds in making her place in the reader's heart, whereasHegan's friends make for an endearing lot. The main antagonist (JohnnyFaraci) comes out as a formidable figure, while the other villains areequally menacing. Panettiere explores complex themes of domesticviolence, anger issues and includes plenty of law enforcementparticulars with details of police bureaucracy and mafia politics toplease crime lovers. Full of both subtle twists and swift revelations, the narrative is fueled with a hefty dose of tension as the brutalkillings continue and separate narrative threads come together as thestory advances. Although the murderers are known to the reader rightfrom the beginning, the tension keeps on building with the progressionof the story as the motives of the killers remain unknown. It's only atthe end that the reader is able to piece together the loose ends andlearns of the actual solution. This is a slow-building, complex, andelaborate mystery, but Panettiere keeps a relentless grip on his readers as new motives arise throughout the story. With its top-notchcharacterization, elaborate backstory, and a hefty dose of relentlesstension, this rich, engrossing novel will delight lovers ofslow-building, intricate mysteries. Highly recommended to fans ofElizabeth George, Peter Robertson!

About the author

VINCENT PANETTIERE
Biography
Vincent Panettiere was not born in a trunk at the Princess Theatre in Pocatello, Idaho, but in Brooklyn, NY.
He graduated from St. John’s University and went to graduate school at Boston University. After college he became a sports writer for the wire service United Press International (UPI) and later wrote for the Boston Herald, a major daily newspaper in that city before Rupert Murdochized it.
After holding executive positions at Westinghouse Broadcasting, CBS and Xerox he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a screen writer. Four of his scripts were optioned but not produced, one by Twentieth Century Fox and the others by now-defunct production companies.
He became a licensed and bonded literary agent representing writers and directors in television and films. He made deals for writers and directors on TV series, including Xena, The Untouchables and Babylon 5. He was also instrumental in the production of two independent feature films and the sale of numerous indie/MOW film scripts.
During the same time, Panettiere was certified by the Major League Baseball Players Association to serve as an agent for major league and professional baseball players. Clients he represented played in the major leagues for the Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals.
Objecting to the standard means of financing independent films, Panettiere sought non-traditional funding for his writer/director clients. His journey through the murky world of cyberspace was chronicled in his first book The Internet Financing Illusion published in 2007.
Next, Panettiere turned to fiction. In A Woman to Blame, Panettiere created the character of Chicago police detective Mike Hegan. This was followed by These Thy Gifts, a second novel featuring Hegan, The Scopas Factor and his latest, The Music of Women.
There is more information on Panettiere and his books on the website www.vincentpanettiere.com.
He continues to live in Los Angeles and has eaten dinner in Pocatello, Idaho.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2020Format: KindleVerified Purchase“A Woman to Blame” by Vincent Panettiere is a fast-paced, complex murder/mystery/thriller. Our protagonist, Mike Hegan, is a cop with a nose for sensing when something is fishy, and he thinks the case of murder/suicide of a young horse trainer is as smelly as it gets. Hegan starts out as a brash, stubborn character, but the author quickly builds his backstory as one of a man fighting many of his own demons. As he is looking at possibly dealing with an unwanted early retirement, he can’t shake the feeling that this case was not as it seemed, and he begins to attempt to unravel the truth. But it takes him deeper than he ever imagined, into the criminal undergrounds of Chicago and the Caribbean. Dodging people who don’t want him to uncover the truth, Hegen’s tenacity and bulldog tendencies keep him going in a story that is full of excellent characters, scene setting, and a gripping plot.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA Woman to Blame by Vincent Panettiere is a mystery type of book. When the trainer of a racehorse is found dead, the mystery of it all begins! I love one of the main characters, Mike Hegan, because he does not give up on solving this mystery, and he proves that he will go to any and every end he needs to in order to figure out what really happened. I really loved his persistent attitude! There are a lot of characters in this book, and the author gives quite a lot of detail to each and every character, which ultimately added a sense of complexity to the story. At times, I loved this aspect of it, and at other times, it made the story unnecessarily complex and confusing/hard to keep up with at times. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to any fan of mystery books out there!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2015A Woman To Blame had me hooked from the first page. Mike Hegan is a fantastic lead character. Hegan is a very smart and determined cop who is forced into retirement as a result of an off duty injury. All the characters, even the smaller and less mentioned ones are vividly depicted. Although, Mike Hegan was my favorite character and I really would like to see a series of novels based on him. I really enjoyed this story and I found it intriguing how it is written with clever twists and turns from Chicago to the Caribbean and full of mobsters, relationships, and family. It's Mike's determination as a cop and a man of honor and valor that takes him so many places investigating a homicide that had an official ruling that Mike found disturbing and most disagreeable. Mike goes through many life changes throughout the novel and most people would buckle under so much trauma, but not Mike Hegan. Hegan's character is larger than life and never gives up. I very much this brilliant mystery that is so engaging and very well written. Definitely a refreshing must read mystery!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2018I personally found it hard to follow some of the transitions. The premise of the story was interesting, but the losses were often hard to take.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA Woman to Blame begins strongly with the story of the mysterious death of a young woman. Then we get to know the protagonist of the story, Detective Mike Hegan. This is totally inaccurate but in my little head, I was picturing Mark Wahlberg, for some reason. Anyway...ignore that.
I actually enjoy mysteries as they are super intriguing. In fact, I take pride in overcoming the anxious need of going to the last pages to see how it all ends. Nah, I loved the stress that this story caused me all along the road. The characters are well-developed, the story is gripping, and the plot is thick and elaborate. All the elements that will make you love this story too.
You might expect to get the story of this retired officer's seeking the truth and how it took him all the way to the Caribbean, but then you start to enjoy the elements that make you like the characters for what he is and the demons he has to fight himself. There is drama in this story as you will love it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhen crime fiction reads like a Western, you should be prepared to be surprised and entertained at this same.
This novel has all elements of a Western crime genre in it. The protagonist, a lady who trains a horse that is supposed to win in a thoroughbred racehorse is found dead. The authorities want everyone to assume it is a typical murder-suicide case because the horse is killed, too. However, it take the eagle eyes of a veteran police detective, Mike Hegan, to uncover the real truth behind the happenings.
No doubt, the characterization of this novel is properly done, and the subplots are wonderfully woven to give us a well-written book that is specifically remarkable. I think readers will like the fast-paced actions in it.
