"...This amusing story reminded me of reading about Curious George with all the Unintentional mishaps that Drew ends up in...I enjoyed that the book also shows children playing an active role in activities with family, which is extremely important for children's self-esteem..." -Literary Titan Editorial Review
Attentive Children
This book showcases the obvious, that children watch our every move. Children learn to speak from listening - every right and wrong word we say. They learn about the world around them through instruction and from watching you.
Drew observes Mom and knows what one button inside her car can do. Maybe? The first attempt to be helpful begins the day's troublesome journey. We learn lessons through trial and error, but Drew hopes your child will learn from the mistakes made in What a Muck.
"This book is great for sparking a conversation. Even when we have good intentions, things can go the wrong way...a sweet rhyming colourful picture book..." -Author, Medea Kalantra
Rhyming
A good book doesn't have to rhyme, but a good rhyming book serves an important purpose. Rhyme helps aid in a child's language and reading development. It teaches verbal and memory skills. When a child hears pitch and rhythm, they are developing listening and attention skills. When a book is easy and fun, a child builds confidence in the ability to recite it. This leads to more reading. When reading is fun to hear or listen to, your child develops important academic skills, all the while being entertained.
"...a delightful rhyming book with a fun and past-paced story. I love the cororful illustrations and the expressions...a great job introducing car safety to children." -Author, Pat Black-Gould
"A Delightful Book...The rhyming text is fun and will catch the attention of a child..." -Amazon Review
Gender Identity
Drew is gender neutral, never referred to as he or she. Just a person like you and me.

Editorial Reviews
Review
While Mom and Drew are packing up the car with gardening tools to go help Papa Lou in his garden, Drew accidentally locks the keys inside their car, they must walk to Papa Lou's house in the hot sun, leaving them unable to garden and clean up the muck.
Now Drew has another idea. Drew wants to help Papa Lou, so Drew hops in the truck and proceeds to pull the stick shift down. The truck begins to roll away. Thankfully before the truck could crash into a pole, Drew was able to clean up the muck and knows now that it is important to ask how to be helpful.
In this charming rhyming children's story, we follow young Drew, who only wants to be helpful but causes some chaos instead. Drew's heart is always in the right place, but it is hard to figure out the correct way to help. I felt the situations Drew got into could realistically happen to other children; this makes the story both comical and frightening. This amusing story reminded me of reading about Curious George with all the unintentional mishaps that Drew ends up in.
The author has a great vision with the message in the story, such as that it is important to want to be helpful but even more important to ask HOW to help. In addition, I enjoyed that the book also shows children playing an active role in activities with family, which is extremely important for children's self-esteem.
What a Muck by Linda Sachs and illustrated by Katrina Sachs is an entertaining picture book that shows children the importance of not just helping but making sure they are helping in a manner that is actually helpful. This would be a great aid in teaching children the importance of communication, teamwork, and trust.

About the author

As a young girl, Linda had a wonderful school librarian, who introduced her to the love of reading. Years later, reading piqued her desire to write. Eventually, she studied creative writing and learned a form of the craft she hadn't explored before.
At that time, Linda's daughters were young and she discovered the enjoyment of writing children's picture books. Today, Linda is a nana to five young grandsons, and has many great nieces and nephews. They inspire, and kindly listen to every revised edition she writes.
Inspiration comes in many forms of observation. Sometimes inspiration can come while sipping tea and listening to interesting conversation. Her recent book, No More Stuff was inspired by her mom and her story of a Christmas during the Great Depression of the 1930's.
Her children's books are crafted to entertain and help early readers discover the joy of reading.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThere's so much to love about this book. The child's spirit is relatable--wants to help, but gets into inadvertent trouble. Wants to make it better, then makes it worse. The storyline follows along this theme with a rhyming cadence to it, most of which will make children laugh. A great early reader, and a wonderful "read with your child" book for generating questions on topics like basic safety habits. The gender-neutral child is an added element I hadn't noticed until I read more about the book from the author. There's one reference to "the older boys," but that doesn't mean a girl wouldn't also look up to them for role modeling. A family delight--not to be missed.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a Muck is a delightful rhyming book with a fun and fast-paced story. I love the colorful illustrations and the expressions on the faces of the characters as Drew, in his attempt to help his mom, gets into a variety of predicaments. I’m sure all kids can relate to things not going the way they intended. Drew’s grandfather realizes that. I’m touched by the tenderness when he states, “Please,” Papa said, “go easy on my heart. Next time, let me do the driving part.” In the end, Drew gets the message. In an entertaining way, Linda Sachs does a great job introducing car safety to children.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA wonderful story that offers kids an adventure of fun with “Helpful Drew.” Great giggles and parenthood relatable material that makes this story easy to read, while sharing a message of sweetness too. I’m a huge fan of rhyming story and it was done very well. The art is great too!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2022Format: KindleThis is such a delightful story! Drew is a sweet boy who genuinely enjoys helping people and loves how it makes him feel. Unfortunately, whenever he tries to help, he makes a muck of things. 😕😕 In one situation after another, helpful Drew finds himself getting into trouble. Then finally, Drew has an epiphany. Perhaps it would be better to ask how he can help rather than tumbling head first. Or, as Drew puts it, "Now I know how to get that happy feeling. Ask HOW to help, and don't go freewheeling." 😂😂
This is an excellent book for little ones that includes a valuable lesson. Enjoy! 😍😍
