A courageous spinster…
Purity Mayfield knows her place in society. A governess with no prospects for marriage, she’s built her life around hard work and quiet determination. But when she discovers a young girl being mistreated by her cruel caregiver, Purity doesn’t hesitate to act—even if it means earning the ire of the girl’s formidable, aristocratic, and intimidating father.
A brooding earl…
Theran Rutland, Earl of Westerby, is a man consumed by duty. Widowed and fiercely protective of his daughter, he has no time for romantic notions—or the fiery accusations of an outspoken governess. Yet, when Purity’s claims uncover dark truths about his household, Theran does the unthinkable: he hires her.
A future threatened by secrets…
As Purity brings warmth and light into his daughter’s life, she begins to break through Theran’s carefully constructed walls. But just as passion starts to bloom, secrets from Purity’s past surface, and a jealous rival plots to tear them apart. With betrayal and scandal threatening to destroy everything, Purity and Theran must decide—will they risk their hearts to fight for love, or let the past dictate their future?

From the Author
While His One and Only Lady carries a thread of inspiration, this story is rich with romantic tension and undeniable chemistry. From the moment Purity Mayfield and Theran Rutland meet, sparks fly—and neither of them is prepared for what follows.
I've heard from readers who question whether love can happen quickly. And I understand that view. But I also believe love doesn't follow rules or timelines. Some of the strongest, longest-lasting relationships I've known began in a matter of days or weeks. In fact, I married my husband just three weeks after we met—and decades later, we're still going strong.
Purity and Theran's connection is instant, but their story is grounded in emotional honesty. They're two people shaped by their pasts, trying to navigate a world that rarely makes space for love on their terms. It's a journey of trust, acceptance, and following one's heart—even when it defies expectations.
For returning readers, you'll enjoy seeing glimpses of the other women from Haven House: Joy (A Lady's Scandalous Kiss), Mercy (No Lady for the Lord), and Chasity (Love Lessons for a Lady). And for those who've read No Lady for the Lord, you may remember Corinna Brockman—her story unfolds in A Rogue Worth the Risk, part of The Honorable Rogues® series.
Next in the Secrets of Scandalous Ladies series: Never a Proper Lady, where Faith Roth dares to pursue a profession deemed unfit for women—and crosses paths with a man who might be her perfect match... if he can see beyond the scandal.
Hugs,
Collette

~ Miss Purity Mayfield, in a letter written en route to the Mumfords' to Miss Faith Roth
Mottford Hall, Essex, England
Home of the Earl and Countess of Mumford
22 August 1818 — Mid-Morning
Bliss. Pure, sublime bliss.
Purity Mayfield tilted her face into the sun's soothing rays and gave a contented sigh. Humming the ballad she'd sung to her wards that morning, she relaxed into the comfortable, cushioned chaise lounge—one of several in the cozy garden. Apparently, none of the other houseguests who'd arrived over the past couple of days had discovered this magical retreat yet.
To be honest, she wasn't exactly one of the elite haut ton guests. Nevertheless, she felt as privileged as one at that moment. Glancing around the isolated enclosure, Purity smiled.
Her cherished privacy might be partially due to the ten-foot-tall beech hedge surrounding the charming square and its distance from the manor house. She'd accidentally come upon the hedgerow's arched opening while walking the greens farthest from the opulent mansion.
A few feet from her, across the verdant grass paralleled by rust-colored brick pavers lay a square pond. An angel wearing a strategically placed loincloth for modesty's sake topped a two-tiered burbling fountain.
For the moment, this enchanted haven was all hers to enjoy. No quieting energetic children, wiping noses, gently but firmly reminding her charges to mind their manners, or doing the often unreasonable bidding of her employers.
For a few coveted minutes, it was just Purity, the fish, a few bees, and a mild August morning sun.
She eyed the entrance with a mixture of trepidation and expectation.
Surely this heaven was too perfect to last.
The reluctance of the upper ten thousand to part with their plush mattresses before noon also likely explained why no others had joined her in this picturesque retreat.
That was perfectly fine with Purity.
More than fine, in truth.
In general, the upper class had little use for servants except how the menials made their elite lives more comfortable and convenient. Respect, consideration, and basic politeness were reserved for those of the same social standing as members of le beau monde—not the lower orders.
As a governess, Purity fell somewhere between the servants and the family she worked for. She wasn't included in either, and it made for a rather lonely existence—apart from her time with the children in her charge.
As accomplished as she was at appearing subservient and compliant, there were moments she had to bite the inside of her cheek to keep her ungracious opinions to herself or stifle a disrespectful, if honest, retort.
Her current employers, the Viscount and Viscountess Ceddes, were challenging on the best day and intolerable on a bad one. She'd long since learned to recite in her head, "a soft answer turneth away wrath," over and over.
Never mind how much she might fume after a disagreeable encounter. Her position, and thus her future, depended on an acquiescent and submissive demeanor.
Neither trait came naturally to her.
She'd often wondered if either of her parents—she had no idea who they might be—had possessed a tenacious nature too. Or which she'd inherited her riot of curly hair from.
Shading her eyes with her hand, Purity spied a squirrel cautiously creeping across the grass. Sitting on its haunches, it darted its black-eyed gaze here and there, its tiny little nose twitching all the while. The darling thing would advance a couple of feet, flick its fluffy red tail, and repeat its anxious perusal.
Perhaps it drank from the fountain daily.
Purity lowered her hand, and the squirrel dashed into the hedge. A second later, it poked its head out and scolded her for her audacity.
She chuckled. "I'll be gone soon, my little friend. Let me enjoy these few stolen moments in paradise before my world returns to normal."
Drumming her fingertips on the chaise's arms, Purity permitted her mind to return to her earlier reflections. To be fair, disagreeable interactions with Lord and Lady Ceddes had been infrequent since they seldom deemed it necessary to visit their offspring.
Attending this house party was an unofficial send-off for Pomeroy, Merrilee, and Amaris Bardslay. It was also the longest expanse of time the couple had spent with their children since they'd hired Purity. Neither parent demonstrated paternal inclinations. Ten minutes with their offspring stretched the bounds of their benevolence.
In just over four short weeks, Purity's charges would be off to boarding schools, and she would be unemployed for the first time since leaving Haven House and Academy for the Enrichment of Young Women—the foundling home and school where she'd been raised and educated.
Hopefully, she'd manage a visit with a few of her closest friends, also raised at Haven House and Academy for the Enrichment of Young Women, before she started her new job.
A job she'd yet to acquire, as she had no letter of reference yet.
She'd waited for months—growing increasingly impatient—for her employers to offer to write her a recommendation or even mention that, very shortly, her services would no longer be required. They'd remained frustratingly obtuse and disobliging in that regard. Now, she found herself in the discomfiting position of having to ask for a reference while in attendance at this house party.
She made a dismissive sound in her throat.
Enough of this unfruitful, melancholy musing.
With deliberate intent, Purity turned her thoughts in a more pleasant direction: this glorious, unforeseen reprieve from responsibilities. She'd been given an unexpected gift, and she meant to enjoy every splendid second.
After breakfast, Lady Ceddes had actually collected her children for a morning outing with several other families and didn't require Purity's services for a few hours.
Would wonders never cease?
There was a first time for everything.
Purity gave a slight shake of her head, and a curl flopped loose from her chignon.
Dratted nuisance.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLoved this story of Thereon and Purity. They were both such relatable characters. Loved how their story developed and although quickly formed, their story was believable. The villagers was especially unlikable! Too bad she didn't go down in flames (lol). A great read for a quiet day. MS Cameron has delivered another favorite.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHis One and Only Lady: A Sweet Historical Regency Romance (Daughters of Desire (Scandalous Ladies) is Book 4 in the series.
Theran Rutland has a young daughter from his first marriage. Bernadine is a mischievous scamp. She's hiding from her governess, who has slapped her and while calling for her to come out of hiding is also calling her terrible names.
Purity Mayfield, governess to three children that are being sent off to boarding school, comes out when she hears Bernadine crying and softly, sniffling. She accompanies her to her papa and tells him what she saw and heard.
This is the beginning of their love story.
I enjoyed this addition to Daughters of Desire, book four.
I enjoyed a 34 year marriage to my jr. High school sweetheart. Love at first sight, does happily exist!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIn this new addition to the author’s Daughters of Desire series, we meet another young woman who was brought up in the Haven House and Academy for the Enrichment of Young Women which is, in essence, a foundling home for unwanted infant daughters of the nobility. Purity had been very well trained at Haven House as a governess and she has been employed by a single family for eight years, though she is aware her employment will soon come to an end. In the first sentences of the book, we meet Purity at a house party attended by the family she works for, and the plot quickly takes Purity along with it – and not in the direction she had so hoped for. While far from an interpretation of a fairy tale, the story of Cinderella does come to mind. The villains are truly despicable, the hero finally realizes what (and who) is most important to him, and the plucky heroine, who we have been rooting for from the very beginning, has a happier ending than one might have expected. It is a sweet and light story to while away a lazy afternoon.

I always know that before I open the first page of a story by this author, that I am going to love every moment! So many words come to mind to describe her writing.. she brings the characters alive in their surroundings so you can literally see them in your mind and hear their voices!
Purity has made the best of her life, having grown up as a foundling and become a governess for several years. But her current charges are about to go out into the world and she will need to find a new position. She has so much compassion and there is no way her charges do not love her.
When she finds herself protecting a small girl who is being abused by her governess/step aunt/ termigent, she goes to her defense. She confronts the father to tell him what she has observed.
Theran's little girl is his life, especially after the loss of his beloved wife. But when he meets Purity and hears about his sister in law.....well let's just say he needed a new governess.
A sweet, story of the heart that Collette does so well. What more can I say? Loved it!!
PS Don't you love the beautiful cover?

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis newest book in the Daughters of Desire Series sees Purity Mayfield travel to a summer house party as governess to the three children of Lord and Lady Ceddes. Unusually for them, they take their children with them on an outing for they day, giving Purity a real treat: time to herself. While relaxing in a secret garden at the home of the Mumford, Purity hears a little girl crying. She also hears rather nasty comments from a lady in search of this child, Bernadine Rutland. Purity does what comes naturally to this kind hearted heroine, consoling the little three year old and sets off to find her father. Unfortunately she comes across the owner of the horrible comments, Athena Summerville, and Purity also becomes a victim of Athena’s nasty words. This lady is in fact Bernadine’s aunt who is doing her best to become Theron, Bernadine’s father’s, next wife.
Theron, sees his daughter’s distress and comes to realise that Purity’s report of Athena’s behaviour is only the latest towards his beloved daughter. Athena is not happy when Theron tells her to leave the house party. Unfortunately Purity’s day is not finished as she is accosted by Lord Geddes outside the nursery that night. Luckily Theron was inside and comes out to deal with The drunken Lord, who aims to assault her. Theron tells him to remove himself from the house party too, which he does with his family the following morning. Now out of work and with no reference, Purity is happy to accept Lady Mumford’s offer of Bernadine’s governess for the remainder of the party.
There is MUCH more in this lovely story, including the discovery of Purity’s real name and her family.
Again, Collette Cameron imagination and writing skills have given us an extremely delightful story, full of characters whose characters display a wealth of traits. I do so love the hero in a book to have his faults! And I love a heroine who really deserves to have that hero love and cherish her, giving her the happy ending I must have in my reading.
A superb read, a joy to read - Thank you, Collette!
