- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchasePredator Girl is a thoroughly enjoyable read that meets the three criteria of "Genuine, Unique, and Polished" [...]. The two main characters--Jared and Ilume--are well conceived, with strong, genuine motivations; and while the secondary characters naturally receive less attention, they come across as true individuals as well. As for uniqueness, the world that serves as a backdrop for these characters is different from any I've encountered, largely because the "Otherworlder" concept is so open-ended, meaning virtually any supernatural trope might be encountered, and then some. ("There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.") At the same time, the deft descriptions keep the reader grounded in each scene. And the plot, while twining around an apparently doomed love story, takes its own unexpected twists and turns. Wrap this all in polished prose (no careless spelling and grammar so common in modern fiction), and the result is a real treat. I sincerely hope that S. B. Roozenboom will be writing more tales in this world!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed this book more than I expected; it's young adult fiction, which I do like, but I'm not a huge fan of the big vampires and werewolves trend in youth fiction, even though I like older vampire books like Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Although I was somewhat intrigued by the general premise -- a group of beings who sit somewhere between humans and entities usually relegated to the realm of fantasy, who are able to function within both worlds. At the very beginning I was quite put off by what was basically an orgy (or close to) involving teenage boys; it's not described in detail, but the situation is clear, and it made me unsure whether I would like the story or the characters. The tone quickly changed, though, and I was drawn into the conflict between the two societies.
I particularly enjoyed the switching between viewpoints, so the reader gets insight into both Jared's and Ilume's perspectives -- the author does a pretty good job with the first-person narrative, which can be challenging. Perhaps the best part is the sensitivity which is shown by both main characters to the plight of the other -- this is in many ways a coming of age story for both of them, and both have to question their values and preconceptions about the Other (meaning humans or non-humans in general), though Jared has the biggest conversion.
I was quite impressed with the way Roozenboom dealt with issues like prejudice and the Other without coming across as preachy or heavy-handed, and the discoveries made the story more full and satisfying. The tone of the writing is a little more chatty than I always like, but it works in this instance, and the characterizations seem quite real and believable; the "villain" is sufficiently frustrating and repellent without feeling like a caricature, and struggles of the protagonists are easy to empathize with. The only thing that seemed weird to me was that Ilume's society referred to non-humans as "abnormals" -- generally speaking, cultures usually view themselves as the norm and outsiders as the "weird" ones; I could see Jared viewing the Rooks and Jackals as abnormal, but not the wolves themselves.
So -- if you like YA paranormal fiction, this is an excellent choice: it has much better writing than some, and though here is romance, the story and issues go beyond that to deal with universal human problems. I liked it quite a bit.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was written from a high school perspective. As such, it's the perfect YA novel. I frankly found myself bored. But I finish what I start. A friend of mine had downloaded it on my recommendation before I read it, and I actually told him after I finished it that he wouldn't enjoy it. And I'm trying to get him to read more of the genres I like, this wasn't a good introduction.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a thrilling read. It had romance, Ilume and Jared are from two different worlds, she's a werewolf and he's a finder (tracks beings such as werewoves) yet they fall in love. It had action, she's going to marry someone she doesn't love to help prevent a war and Jared's going to try to stop it. And of course it had fantasy, after all we are talking about supernatural beings for the entire story. The author neatly ties up loose ends (what happened to Jared's father, why is the leader of Ilume's pack, Rex, hate human so much) and keeps the plot moving forward nicely, there was never a dull moment in the book. I would read a second book about Ilume and Jared if there was one.

Josie SReviewed in the United Kingdom on January 4, 20144.0 out of 5 stars An captivating story line.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA interesting story with ideas that I have not previously seen in shifter/fantasy books. It would be interesting to see where the characters are in future books and how they come into play. I'm going to. Get the next one to fid out. Would recommend. The only downfall for me was that it's a little short.
