Five Years Later Kindle Edition
"Kraft’s brightly humorous narrative skillfully spins out Elle’s story, hopping between tantalizing sections set in 2012 and 2017... An engaging and often skillfully written romance." - Kirkus Reviews
The only thing more powerful than truth is perception.
The only emotion stronger than hatred is hope.
When Portland sales girl, Elle Fox, takes some old friends up on an offer to join their group "zencation" to the Oregon Coast, she hardly expects their gathering to include her ex, Scott Darcy. Five years ago, Scott pulled Elle in like a rip tide. A rebel with a taste for adventure, he had swept her away from small town life into the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. They had plans to explore the world together, until he disappeared without a word.
Elle thought she understood what happened between them (he wanted to be with that leggy waitress from the brewery they used to go to) but when an old box surfaces in his truck she uncovers a different story, one that will flush out long-hidden secrets about him, her family, and - hardest and most surprising of all - herself.
Told in dual timelines, FIVE YEARS LATER explores the trials of true love, the ties of a family divided, and the challenges of forgiving those who unintentionally hurt us - including ourselves.

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Five Years Later?
There was so much that went into Five Years Later. It was inspired in many ways by my own life and the emotional turmoil I had to unravel in my twenties. Most kids are just getting on their feet at this stage in life, but the ground beneath mine was torn out from under me as my parents divorced and my family fell apart. I had to leave college. I had to leave my home of twenty years. My dad and I could hardly speak to each other. I felt angry and betrayed and terrified, and guilty on top of it all for having all those emotions... but it got me to where I needed to be today. It made me realize I not only wanted to tell a modern-day love story (I usually write paranormal) but a story about overcoming family trauma as well as overcoming our own selves. It takes a lot of courage to face our demons. It takes even more courage to take them by the hand and say "I acknowledge you" so that you can begin the process of moving forward.
If you woke up in the world of Five Years Later, what is the first thing you would do?
The first thing I would do is get in Scott Darcy's Tacoma and tell him we're going on an adventure! I loved developing Scott's character. He was such a cold, tough-ass at first but the more I got to know him in my own head, the more I wanted to put him on paper. What did he really want? Who was he really? I loved finding out, because even I wasn't sure until the end of Five Years Later!
If you had to write a blurb for the last book you read, what would it say?
I am currently reading Athena Bahri's Raise Your Vibes and I'm pretty sure if I had to write the intro blurb it would read, "Come one, come all, Moon Children and Scientific Skeptics alike!" I love books that focus on Eastern and Indian medicine like sound bathing and meditation, and while I am a heavy skeptic as well I'm also a believer in the power of our wild, amazing Universe.
Where did you write Five Years Later?
I wrote most of Five Years Later while curled up in some strange positions on my bed that resulted in tailbone strain and the need to bring a memory foam pillow to my office job... Yes, it was worth it. Haha!
Pretend you qualified for the Olympics this year. What sport would you compete in?
Hiking...if it were an Olympic sport, but since it's not probably running. I'm a get-up-and-go kind of girl for sure!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is one of those books you can't put down ,you don't want to put down because you have to know what happens next .
Moving forward, finding truth , sometimes painful truths and eventually embracing the truth and working on becoming a better person and building a better life are some of the themes .
Sarah doesn't hold back about the pain and confusion we go through in life because the ones we love aren't always who we think they are.
Amazingly well written ,the places described come alive and the characters in the story are as real as your own family .
One of those books you'll read over and over again because the lessons learned are something we all need.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2021Format: KindleFive Years Later is a cute romance told in two timelines, the main characters' past and the present. It makes for an interesting juxtaposition of backstory and current turmoil. It helps to build the tension between the characters in a clever way that isn’t just one big info-dump of the characters' history together. We get to see their story play out in real time. Sometimes the jumps did get confusing and I had to remind myself which timeline I was reading. I also found myself far more invested in the present storyline rather than the past and enjoyed that much more, seeing their dislike for each other change over time.
There was a lot happening for our MC, Elle. From a father with an abusive past to a divorced mother living far too close, Elle has a lot of family issues to deal with besides a sexy ex. As Elle and Scott spent more time together the truth begins to reveal itself as to why Scott walked out of her life all those years ago. Unfortunately, the past comes back to haunt Elle when she goes away for a nice relaxing vacation, and who else shows up but Scott himself?
Elle is a spitfire with a bit of a temper. She was a great MC and I enjoyed her. I also loved her two best friends and Scott’s friend Jordan.
Scott makes a great leading man. He starts off as kind of a jerk but he has his reasons. He is caring and sweet. He shows his true colors when Elle gets injured in a freak accident.
This was an enjoyable, easy beach read. It was long enough to set the stage but short enough to get through in a day. The dialogue was decent, the romance was sweet and mostly clean with enough buildup and tension to make the final scenes worth waiting for.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2022Format: KindleIf there was one word to describe Five Years Later, it would be EMOTION. Emotion propelled the story forward, and I could really feel the strong emotional responses within the characters, particularly for Elle and how she responds when Scott comes back into her life. I didn’t doubt for a second the honesty and genuineness of that, and as the story progresses, readers discover why it’s been so hard for Elle to move past what had happened five years ago, and why she can’t let go.
As the synopsis indicates, the only thing more powerful than truth is perception, and for a long time Elle has had a certain perception of Scott, and why their relationship had ended. At the same time, Scott has had his own perceptions, and so much of it for both of them stems from how they were raised, their pasts, their parents, the influences that shaped how they handle themselves while in a serious relationship. I appreciated Elle’s fiery spirit and attitude, often matched well with Scott’s. The dual timelines gradually unfolds how all of it leads them to the “zencation” on the coast, when the time has come to finally figure out what actually happened, and how to deal with it.
I’m an Oregonian girl myself, born and raised in Salem. It was really great to live vicariously through the characters as they navigate the Pacific Northwest backdrop, introducing me to the parts I’m not very familiar with, like Oregon City, as well as re-introducing me to the areas I know so well–like the various hiking trails and waterfalls while Elle and Scott connect during their outdoor excursion. Setting this story in Oregon felt like the perfect set up, considering the wild nature of the forests and smooth buildings in the city matched perfectly with the personality of the protagonist–a mix of wildness and cementable stability. It was an intriguing experience, a well-deserved five-star read!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2021Format: PaperbackA delightful, fun, mischievous read. For those lucky enough to have found their one true love, imagine losing them over a misunderstanding and then fate sees fit to provide the opportunity to make it right 5 years later? This book alternates between the original romance and the rekindling 5 years later, and it's great. I was just as interested in the original romance as the second chance. Well written, first-rate love story -- oops stories.
