The Fourth Rising (The Peter Brandt Mysteries Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars (29)

On May 8, 1945, WWII in Europe ended with Germany’s surrender. But did the Nazi Party itself surrender? Some say no.

1943: A German ship moors in a clandestine anchorage in western Mexico with a cargo of gold intended to bribe the Mexican government into declaring war on the United States. When the attempt fails, the German vessel flees leaving its gold buried somewhere along the coast of the Sea of Cortés.

1997: The horrific murder of an old flame’s husband sets former war correspondent Peter Brandt on the hunt for the hidden Nazi treasure. The search takes him down a bloody trail leading from the drug cartels of Mexico to a neo-Nazi training camp in the Southern California mountains. Along the way, he unearths a decades-long Nazi conspiracy to create a new Fourth Reich and continue the Nazi Party’s plan for world domination.

Inspired by true historical events, and recent research suggesting the Nazi Party survived the German surrender, The Fourth Rising is the latest in the Peter Brandt adventures which include Empty Places and The Last Refuge.

Praise for The Last Refuge: “A first class performance from a writer at the very top of his game…” (SHOTs Crime and Thriller Magazine)

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Hill injects suspense and plausibility into a familiar plot--the existence of a covert movement aimed at restoring the Nazi Reich...Hill nicely balances action and exposition. Readers new to this author will want to check out his other books." (Publisher's Weekly)

"A highly engaging and suspenseful novel that encompasses all of the best elements of crime, mystery, historical, conspiracy and thriller genres, with plenty of action and adventure thrown in for good measure. ... What impressed me most was the author's commitment to historical realism, and using evidence that we know has been truthfully uncovered in the real world. This made the context and developments from the author's imagination all the more credible and therefore truly terrifying in places. ... Overall, I would highly recommend The Fourth Rising to all readers looking for their next great thriller read." (Reader's Favorite - 5 Stars)

"Readers of mysteries and PI accounts will find The Fourth Rising just the ticket for a different kind of story that revolves around Nazism's ongoing presence in the 20th century. ... Engrossing and fast-paced, this mystery/thriller will intrigue readers who want their stories multifaceted, involving, and intriguing on more than one level." (D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review)

"The writing is great, the pace is pitch-perfect, and the plot serves up plenty of action and adventure. There's also a side dish of romance, and a cat named Jack who serves justice to one of the bad guys. Brandt's encounters with the villains lurking throughout the novel (and there are plenty) are heart-pounding and intense." (Reedsy Discovery)

"Readers will plunge headfirst into this original, engaging, deadly conspiracy thriller. Well-drawn characters and a high stakes-yet-believable plot elevate the novel." (The Booklife Prize)

Martin Roy Hill

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Martin Roy Hill has led an eclectic life. Soldier, sailor, journalist . . . well, not a spy, but he has written about them.

Martin joined the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve when he was 19, the same year he sold his first published piece to Reader's Digest. He spent a total of 13 years as a Coastguardsman, in two tours, involved in small boat search and rescue, emergency medical response, port security, and maritime law enforcement.

In between those tours, he served in a counter-insurgency unit in the U.S. Navy Reserve. After a final stint of Coast Guard active duty following the 9/11 attacks, Martin was offered a commission as a medical service corps officer in a component of the California National Guard, where he trained combat medics for Iraq and Afghanistan. Later, Martin converted to the military police, retiring in 2016 as a major and executive officer of an MP unit.

Martin also served as a wilderness medic and operations sergeant with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Wilderness Search and Rescue Detail, where he was cross trained as a tactical (SWAT) medic. Martin also spent several years as a medic and security specialist with a federal Disaster Medical Assistance Team.

Martin received a bachelor's degree in journalism from CSU Dominguez Hills, and spent more than 20 years as a writer and editor for newspapers and magazines. His investigative reporting earned him numerous journalism honors, including two William Allen White Awards. His stories were included in three of the Investigative Reporters and Editors' annual compilations of the best investigative reporting. He also worked as a freelance correspondent for LIFE and Newsweek.

After serving on active duty following the 9/11 attacks, Martin switched careers, becoming a U.S. Navy analyst in combat casualty care, a position he held for 16 years.

Between his military, public safety, and journalism careers, Martin experienced many adventures. In the Coast Guard, he participated in dozens of rescues, chased Russian spy ships and smugglers, protected dignitaries, and once was nearly lost at sea in a storm. In the Navy, he was assigned to liaison with a USCG patrol boat during war games, and ended up participating in what at the time was the largest drug bust in U.S. history.

He's been known to jump out of a perfectly good airplane, and once followed a migrant trail from the U.S. into Mexico (at that country's request) to locate the remains of a woman who died along the trail so the smuggler leading her group could be prosecuted for her death. As a journalist, he covered disasters, air crashes, wild fires, as well as national and international leaders.

Martin's freelance credits include Reader's Digest, LIFE, Newsweek, Omni, American History, Writer’s Digest, Coast Guard Magazine, Retired Officer Magazine, The Compass, Aviation History, Mother Jones, the Associated Press, the Los Angeles Times Sunday Opinion, and Travel sections, and many more. He was a lead contributor to the 1995 WWII anthology, "From Pearl Harbor to Nagasaki: America at War," published by the Retired Officer Association, and a contributor to the 2013 American Civil War anthology "Gettysburg: Three Days that Saved the United States," published by I-5 Publishing.

Martin's background plays a significant role in his writing, which many reviewers have noted has a sense of realism not often found in fiction. His first book, DUTY, a collection of short stories centered around national service, was named the 2012 Best Short Story Anthology/Collection by the San Diego Book Awards Association. His novel, The Butcher's Bill, received the Best Mystery/Suspense Novel of 2017 from the Best Independent Book Awards, the Clue Award for Best Suspense Thriller from the Chanticleer International Book Awards, the Silver Medal for Thrillers from the Readers Favorite Book Awards, and the award for Adult Fiction from the 2018 California Author Project.

Besides his novels, Martin's short stories have appeared in such publications as Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, ALT HIST: The Journal of Historical Fiction and Alternative History, Mystery Weekly Magazine, Crimson Streets, Nebula Rift, Devolution Z, and others.

Martin is a professional member of the Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime, and International Thriller Writers.

Discovered Nazi gold and a dead man's dirty secrets. A grotesque political machine running strong. A trip to Mexico to investigate missing pieces of history. Encounters with Evil. A romance simmering on the back-burner. A vigilante kitty purring on the couch. Martin Roy Hill's "The Fourth Rising" has a little bit of everything. While reading this novel and getting acquainted with main character Peter Brandt, I became aware of a genre of novels known as "conspiracy thrillers." While this book fits in perfectly with that genre, it is so much more than a "conspiracy thriller" and was a great introduction to Hill's work. If you enjoy history (particularly World War II), military/war thrillers, and yes, conspiracy theories, you need to add this book to your list. The writing is great, the pace is pitch-perfect, and the plot serves up plenty of action and adventure. There's also a side dish of romance, and a cat named Jack who serves justice to one of the bad guys. Brandt's encounters with the villains lurking throughout the novel (and there are plenty) are heart-pounding and intense. It speaks to the quality of the novel when I say that I don't usually read books like this but I dove right in to this one and couldn't stop reading. "The Fourth Rising" is part of a series starring former war correspondent Peter Brandt, but also serves as a stand-alone. Although the book makes some references to events in the previous two Peter Brandt novels, not once did I feel lost with the narrative, characters, or plot. It wasn't easy to put the book down, but it was easy to decide that I'd like to read the other books in the series. There's always something "they" don't want us to see, and Peter Brandt is on the trail of a hidden agenda that will shock and enrage you. Highly recommended for lovers of history and those willing to entertain other versions of historical events. You won't be disappointed.

The Peter Brandt thrillers are reminders that strong plots and good characterizations are strong foundations for a good book. Brandt's bad luck with relationships makes you wait to see what trouble is next for him

A thrilling dive into the idea that Nazis are still alive and undercover right in our own backyard. Peter Brandt is called in by Jo, a former flame, to investigate the hidden life of her tortured and murdered husband. She found relics, papers, and a gold ingot with a suspicious stamp that nobody was supposed to know about. From San Diego to Mexico and back again, Brandt circles ever closer to uncovering the unthinkable and Jo is caught in the crossfire. With a ferocious feline, the Mexican cartel, and an intense look into history and conspiracy, and a final showdown, the book is full of surprises and leaves you saying, “I wonder…”

This is the first Peter Brandt book I’ve read, so yes, it can be read as a stand alone, but now I want the rest of his story, so back we go to the bookstore.

Martin Roy Hill delivers in The Fourth Rising giving a disturbing account of how close Nazi Germany really was to the US, and possibly still is. While we know Argentina provided a safety net to escaping Nazis, Hill's fictional account combines history with fiction to suggest the Nazis tried to bribe the president of Mexico with a freighter filled with Nazi gold to stay out of the war, but failed in its mission.

The story takes place from 1942 to 1997, from the Sea of Cortes, Mexico to San Diego, California when Investigative Reporter Peter Brandt is visited by a woman from his past. Not particularly happy to see her, he can't very well turn her away as she's in trouble.

Turns out the man she left Peter for has been murdered in a tortuous fashion. Further, when Jo brings a disturbing piece of evidence to Peter, the man who still cares for her deeply, combined with the newshound mentality is intrigued. His former amor hands him damning evidence discovered from her husband's hidden safe. Emblazoned with Nazi symbols, the heavy bar appears to be gold.

Where did Jo's husband get his wealth to build up his security business? Intriguing and page turning, well worthy of five stars.

This was the third book in the "Peter Brandt" series, and it was entertaining. I liked that the author has taken historical events and weaved them into an incredible tale. Although the story was fiction, the way that it was told, made it seem like it could happen in today's world. The story held plenty of action and swept me along with its engaging characters and unforeseen twists. I recommend this story to others who enjoy this genre. Tim Danko's narration was agreeable and enhanced the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

The Fourth Rising (The Peter Brandt Thrillers Book 3), my fourth read/listen from author Martin Roy Hill, entertaining & enjoyable. “I received a free Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. Tim Danko's narration made the book flow smoothly & quickly. I look forward to reading more from this author. Excellent read! I always enjoy novels that are based on historical events, so this was quite enjoyable. The protagonists are people we care about, so that is always a vital element in the enjoyment of any book or, in a wider sense, live or recorded theater productions. The "bad guys" are well developed and just "bad" enough to be quite interesting in themselves. All in all, it has encouraged me to investigate the rest of the series (that is, AFTER I complete all my OTHER reviews!)
