About the author

I’ve always loved mysteries, especially those involving Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. Perhaps because Miss Marple reminds me of my aunts when I was growing up. But Agatha never told us much about Miss Marple's earlier life. While writing my own elderly super-sleuth series, I’m tracing her career from the start. As you’ll see, if you follow the Miss Riddell Cozy Mysteries series.
However, this is my Bio, not Miss Riddell’s, so here goes with all you need to know about me: After retiring, I became a writer and when I’m not feverishly typing on my laptop, you’ll find me running, cycling, walking, and taking wildlife photos wherever and whenever I can. My cozy mystery series begins in northern England because that was my home growing up and that’s also the home of so many great cozy mysteries. Stay with me though because Miss Riddell loves to travel as much as I do and the stories will take us to the many different places around the world I’ve lived in or visited.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis latest cozy mystery featuring amateur sleuth Pauline Riddell is set nearly 30 years before the previous one. This time we see her attempting to resolve a series of unpleasant events back in early 1960's rural England, where she grew up.
Set against a wintry backdrop, Pauline returns to her aging parents' farm, where circumstances are far from idyllic. Suffice to say, murder soon raises its ugly head, and Pauline sets out to unmask the culprit.
Riddell is an intriguing character. Her incisive mind is paired with a sharp, uncompromising tongue, making her more than a match for any wrongdoer. I believe fans of cozy mystery should enjoy this new adventure, as well as the authentic feel of 1960's England.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOnce described as a "fighter for justice and righter of wrongs," Pauline "Polly" Riddell is fun to follow and easy to root for; she is smart and strong and savvy, and I really enjoyed reading along as she solved multiple mysteries of theft, forgery, and even murder. "A Murder for Christmas" is entertaining and light, perfect for an afternoon of reading with a hot cup of tea and a quilt on the couch!
James, P.C.. A Murder for Christmas: An Amateur Female Sleuth Historical Cozy Mystery (Miss Riddell Cozy Mysteries Book 3) (p. 163). James Gang Publishing. Kindle Edition.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have enjoyed this series so much, experiencing the development of Miss Riddell as an amateur sleuth. This book is set in Yorkshire, and the details of Pauline managing her elderly parents and negotiating family issues as they struggle through a freezing winter were a great balance to the investigation of a series of nasty crimes and of course a murder. The details of life in Yorkshire in the 1960's were great, as well as the subtle way that Miss Riddell negotiates a man's world and establishes herself as a sleuth to be reckoned with. It is a wonderfully cozy mystery in the tradition of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2023Format: KindleI had not read any of the previous Miss Riddell novels, choosing this one for its Christmas theme. Set mainly on the family farm, we meet her parents and brother, and learn more about the small community she is from and some of her extended family. Although there are clues throughout the book, almost all of the solution happens inside Pauline's head making the explanation at the end tying everything together necessary. Also, the relationship between the culprits is cozy-level psychotic, with one of them most likely getting away without enough evidence to prosecute. I am not sorry I spent the time reading this but was not drawn in enough to want to read any more of her adventures.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMiss Ridell gets dragged into another murder by her family in the middle of a Christmas holiday home. It seemed like such a little thing at first. But of course, as we know, nothing is ever as it seems at first glance. Even a will that isn't as straightforward as it should be. Death is complicated, but then again, a suspect's motives usually are not.
Overall, a delightful, easy read. Very enjoyable to sit by the fire with a drink in hand getting lost in Miss Ridell's antics once again. I'm truly enjoying the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoy James’s ability to keep me guessing. Ms. Riddle gets mired and more interesting with each volume. I couldn’t figure it out but was completely satisfied when all was revealed. I’m looking forward to Ms. Riddell’s next adventure.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMiss Riddell is at it again and carries us along for a wintery mystery at Christmas. She spends her hard earned vacation working to solve a painful mystery of a teenage sweetheart's death. Though he turned black sheep, the slaying of the man who bestowed on Miss Riddell her first kiss presses her into service amidst the worst winter in years. We meet her family and the farm where she grew up. The ending? I didn't see it coming, but I should have! Enjoy a good read and prepare to drop everything once you start!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2023Format: KindleGreat character development and descriptive language. I usually can figure out who the villain is early on but this book kept me guessing until the end. Nothing extremely academic but after all, it is a “cozy” mystery.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA gentle insight into life in the ‘60s northern England - even in the face of dark deeds. Tenant farmers, inheritance issues, death taxes, traditional, austere ways of life, family ties and the cunning instincts of Miss Riddel - who is a master of solving riddles and a woman the constabulary ignore to their own detriment.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was an ok short read of under 200 pages. I didn’t particularly like any of the characters but nor did I dislike them. Miss Riddle is called in by her brother to look into some burglaries and strange going ons in his village, he also wants her her to look at a possible forged will. While she is looking into this, her cousin Walter is found murdered in a field behind his house. Along with the police Miss Riddle looks into these l, convinced they are all connected. I finished this one in a day, there was nothing amazing about this book but the plot was ok and kept me occupied for a day. Sadly I can’t say I’ll be rushing to read any more in this series.
