Finding North: A Journey from Addict to Advocate Kindle Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars (15)

New in recovery, a chance encounter with Gray Hawk, a 74-year old Native American, showed her that healing herself would include looking within, taking Steps, and creating a house of healing for other women.

Today, Marilyn is a Certified Addiction Recovery Empowerment Specialist, recently celebrating thirty-two years of abstinence-based recovery. From 1990-2011, she opened and managed North House, an award-winning residential facility for women.

Before reaching this milestone, she was a desperate woman on drugs, managing rock bands at night, pretending to be okay, but ultimately giving up on herself, losing her husband, children, and friends due to her addiction.

This book is that journey.

The blurb calls it “a chance encounter with Gray Hawk,” yet Gray Hawk believed it was an element of his destiny. There are twists and turns from the parents stylized by the author’s perception extending from childhood escape, into addiction, through collapse of the family and into a personal redemption through shared service to others.
There are several additional stories here. Mother. Father. Family. Community. This book maintains focus on the author’s relationship to manipulation, addiction, self-assessment, games of delusion and sustaining the illusion, “things are ok.” Still, there are the loose ends of those lives, the question of how the author slid down this road, not another, and the question why and how Gray Hawk came to play the role he did.
The writing style is straightforward and relentless, with the simple force you see at an AA meeting: “Hi, I’m so-and-so and I’m an alcoholic.” It’s fascinating to see simultaneous incongruent thought tracks: the external reality, against the internal mental contortions to have everything seem normal. “You think you’re Machiavelli but you’re really Bozo the clown” she’s told at one point. This author does not imbue events with grandiose significance or deep meaning. Readers may wish to do that.
Each of the 105 short chapters has a point without breaking the flow – it’s autobiographical after all. Extracted into focus by time and perspective, the chapters sometimes include bittersweet zingers. At the end of the telling, the question remains ‘Was it a chance encounter?’

This book was an exceptional read, from start to finish. Marilyn Davis is an eloquent writer who has a remarkable ability to deliver her message in a way that keeps readers begging for more. Finding North is about her life, her success and her unique perspective on addiction. Far too often, those suffering from the disease of addiction are placed on the back burner and labeled an afterthought by most of society. However, Marilyn sheds a light on the ever present struggles of addiction and presents herself as a beacon of hope, ever reminding us that if “I can do it, so can you.” In Finding North, Marilyn describes the successes and setbacks many of us will face as we walkthrough this marathon of life. From dealing with loss, to opening a business, to simply managing life on life’s terms, Marilyn puts all the cards on the table; allowing us to form our own vision, and perhaps that vision could be helping others survive the disease of addiction, one day at a time.

What if Marilyn Davis had not heard "You, wait," Gray Hawk's haunting words? The book shows the work beneath a beautiful tapestry of healing. If I didn't know, my guess would have been the author would never find her way to healing. And, odds were against her. But courage and support were found and sometimes in the oddest of people or places. The story of the parents' support could probably be made into another book! Loved this book so much!

I loved this story of how North House came to be. Marilyn Davis has done a remarkable job with women who needed her program desperately. As a parent of one of those success stories I came to understand the life long lessons and bonds that happened there on North Avenue. I am forever grateful that Marilyn was guided by great warriors in her life!

An honest and revealing look into the chaos and pain of addiction, and the possibility of regeneration that comes from that path. For me, there were several paragraphs of tears, and a whole book of hope.

This is an incredible story written by an amazing woman. Marilyn writes about her journey in such an honest open manner, that I instantly felt a bond with her. Her story begins when she is in treatment detoxing, and attending groups. She then ventures into her story of addiction, which starts at age 9, yes age 9.
We get a look into her childhood, adolescence, and follow her into adulthood. I love that she included the good with the bad. Because we are all miracles, in the beginning, we just don’t always follow the path laid out before us. Following her into the depths of her addiction we see first hand how addiction progresses, and what we tell ourselves so we can keep using, our denial, and our rationalizations.
Her story of recovery is one of the most beautiful I have read. Finding purpose is one thing, but her unique story is what I call “divine intervention”. Taking a chance on a stranger’s belief in her, Marilyn begins her journey “from addict to advocate”. Seriously, I was moved to tears. Turning purpose into her mission took faith and action. We give this book FIVE big Shining Stars.

I love this book, but how could I not love it, the writing alone is mixed with all of the rhetorical devices that make great writing. Writing can be learned, but many of the best writers have an innate ability to create a phrase or pack a sentence with more subtext than word count. Marilyn is this kind of writer and once you read the first page you'll be hooked.

If you love a good story there is nothing like a memoir, because it's true. This is not only a great story about one woman's journey through the perils of addiction and the dangerous lifestyle that generally accompanies it, but it's also filled with humor and wit that makes it a page-turner.

Finally, if you know someone that's in recovery, needs recovery, or just loves a great story, get this book.

A walk in the shoes of an addict may not be an easy walk, but it is an eye opening one for those who want to understand the illness. Marilyn tells it from her experience with drugs and alcohol with no sugar coating. For those looking through her window of recovery, it is an educational journey. For those in recovery, it is an understanding heart from one who has been there. For those still needing help, there is hope. My respect and gratitude to this author for her courage.
