The Christmas Miracle: A Peter Travis Love Story Kindle Edition

3.8 out of 5 stars (7)

The miracle is not what you expect it to be....

Peter Travis is a handsome older man in his 60s. He left his heart in Niagara Falls when his first love was senselessly killed by a drunk driver. A year later, he opened Briana's Bistro in her honour. Peter found love again, with a woman twenty years his junior. They have twin boys, and he finally has found the peace that he has always longed for. At Christmastime, 2007, Peter hires a boy, Terry, who is down on his luck. During a wicked snowstorm, the bistro closes early. When the bistro goes up in flames, with his wife, Laura, locked in the staff room, Peter blames God. His life is once again turned upside down. The authorities suspect arson. Laura is in a coma, and even the doctors don't know if she will wake. Will she survive? Will Peter ever know who set the blaze? Triggered, he turns to the bottle, and is visited by the ghost of his first love, Briana. In this suspenseful Christmas tale, read about the power of true love, and find yourself believing that maybe, just maybe, miracles do happen.

Review

"The Christmas Miracle follows Peter Travis, a man marked by grief yet blessed with resilience, who navigates a life shaped by loss, love, and small miracles. He runs Briana's Bistro, a place that holds both memories of a past love and the heartbeat of his present family. Through tender moments with his wife Laura and their children, strained encounters with troubling figures like Stephen Hobbs, and the unexpected bond with a boy named Terry, Peter's world becomes a tapestry of sorrow, second chances, and quiet redemption. At its heart, the book reflects on love's endurance in the face of tragedy, and how the spirit of Christmas can illuminate even the darkest corners of life.

I found myself moved by the writing. Barbara Avon's style has a rhythm that feels both intimate and unpolished in the best way. She doesn't shy away from heavy emotion, and the words carry raw honesty. Sometimes the prose wanders, slipping into almost dreamlike passages, and while that can slow the pace, it also makes the story feel authentic. I felt like I was sitting at Peter's kitchen table listening to him unspool his life, full of regrets and blessings tangled together. There were moments I had to pause, the weight of grief so vividly drawn that it pressed on my chest. Yet the warmth of family and the small, ordinary joys gave the story its balance.

What lingered most for me was the way the book treats memory. Ghosts of the past aren't just haunting, they're guiding, shaping how Peter learns to love again. I liked how the bistro itself became a character, almost a shrine, where the past and present collided. At times, the melodrama was heavy, but I couldn't deny how much I cared about these characters. Their flaws, their resilience, their hunger for meaning, all of it struck a chord. The dialogue, especially between Peter and Laura, felt tender and believable. And the introduction of Terry added a fresh spark, a reminder of hope in unlikely places.

This isn't a story of neat resolutions. It's a reminder that miracles don't erase pain, they stand alongside it. I'd recommend
The Christmas Miracle to readers who want a heartfelt, emotional ride, especially those drawn to family dramas and holiday tales with depth. It's not a light read, but it's one that leaves you holding tighter to the people you love, and maybe seeing the season with softer eyes." - ★★★★ Literary Titan

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. - Pablo Neruda.

Barbara Avon grew up Italian in the Niagara Falls Region and attended Notre Dame High School, and then Brock University. In 1999, she moved to Ottawa to pursue work and has worked for two major Ottawa area magazines. Being a shy kid in school, she created stories in her head, and when her Grade 9 English teacher awarded one of her short stories an A +, she knew that she would one day write a novel.

Avon is a multi-genre author. She’s written Romance, Romantic Thrillers, Time Travel, Mystery, Horror, and Paranormal Romance. Her work appears in various anthologies including Steering 23 Publications, and Beyond the Levee, and her stories have been regularly featured on the Spillwords Press website. In October of 2022, “Revived” was chosen as “Horror Book of the Year” by the “Feed My Reads” community, and in February of 2025, "Sultry Is the Night", received the Literary Titan Gold Medal Award for Fiction. In April of 2025, Avon won the Editor's Choice Award for Literary Excellence from Reader's House Magazine. Her work has also appeared in Publisher's Weekly Magazine.

When she’s not writing, she’s experimenting in the kitchen with her husband, spends her time reading, and watching 1980s movies, and always lives with her characters in her head while working on her current novel. Avon has quoted: I believe in magic. Books are magic. Love is the most remarkable magic.

I love Ms. Avon's phrasing in her writing. Sometimes it's more like poetry than prose (that's a compliment!). And there are all these little surprises as you read, reveals slipped into a thought or conversation. Don't rush through it, enjoy it!

My first Peter Travis book. Boy, has that man suffered!
I enjoyed the story of a tortured soul unwillingly commuting a heinous act and the repercussions of the action.
Unfortunately, while I’m sure many would have acted like Peter in response to his latest tragedy, I just didn’t believe that a seasoned sufferer of his age and hardiness would fall to pieces in the way that he did. His relationship with Laura seemed completely physical. I was amazed at her recovery keeping in mind her illness.
However, it’s an interesting story and I liked the message of forgiveness that is the backbone of the tale.
I received a free copy of the book as a gift from the author for being a newsletter subscriber.

I can't remember a time I enjoyed a Christmas story as much as I have this one. It is not the sappy, sugary style so normal of the genre but one of heartbreaking drama that will make the reader stop to think along the way, "Exactly where is the miracle?" the reader will ask but continue on, and it becomes evident. Ms. Avon gives the reader a literary treat that can be read at any point during the year. One that is packed with messages to examine and an unexpected twist to the ending.

The Christmas Miracle could easily be described as a modern day It's A Wonderful Life, but it's so much more than that. In reading this book I experienced all the feels possible, and I felt utmost urgency to finish before ever putting it down. Avon is a master at pushing the reader to evaluate their own human psyche, and the choices we make on a daily basis. Two of my favorite lines in this novel were "Forever doesn't have to mean infinity" and "Some people's mouths pollute the air by not saying anything at all." Avon is a supreme storyteller and I look forward to reading even more of her work. A definite must read for the Christmas season!

I received this book in paperback format as a gift. I had already read and loved Ms. Avon’s first Peter Travis story so was excited to read “The Christmas Miracle.” This story does not disappoint. After several years, Peter has found love again only to nearly lose his wife when Briana’s Bistro catches on fire. Throughout his ups and downs, the character is so relatable that I rooted for him, and his young wife Laura, and was relieved when their story ended happily. The novel is touching and well written. I highly recommend it.
