- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe story grabs you and doesn’t let go. I loved the 3 characters Scotty, Amanda and the heroine Katie. The exploration of self harm and suicide was written well and thoughtful. I found the pacing very good and each chapter had a little twist. The use of Cain and Abel was new in the realm of angle stories and fit the dark fantasy. I really can’t wait for book two and three.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseSacrificial Lamb is on one level a story about life, death, and what comes after. The author tells a straightforward and well-written tale about Kathryn, a college-aged girl coping with anxiety in the face of academic stress, romantic paradoxes, and the demands of employers and friends until tragedy strikes. The emotional tempo of the work is engaging without becoming overwhelming and invites the reader along on a journey as it happens in first-person, walking beside Kathryn as she transitions from a complicated existence to an afterlife where she takes center stage in a conflict between ancient forces.
Underneath the current of young adult fiction with Christian iconography, a much deeper story exists. Ashley Nicole spends her debut novel addressing the difficult topics of suicide, depression, self-harm as a coping mechanism, grief, and feelings of having little control over one’s life – all with a frankness and grace that maintains the momentum of the novel and avoids the feeling of aggressive and overt agenda so common in the genre. Rarely have I read works that dared engage on so many complex levels, addressing the issues from the perspectives of both the victims and those affected around them, and in so doing Mrs. Nicole sets herself apart as a compassionate and empathetic objectivist capable of bringing much-needed relatability to the body of literature.
While the text might have benefited from a rinse of line and copy editing, the minor clerical issues do not detract from the author’s demonstrated ability as a novelist or the path of the story through a compelling plot with characters that linger in the reader’s mind well after the last page is turned. I recommend this book to any fans of the genre, and genuinely look forward to the publication of The Other Angels Book Two.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBad angels tempt teens to suicide for warriors in a coming battle. The book is interesting. It has many things going for it. It's a little slow paced and needs a little more excitement and detail.

Everyone always says don’t judge a book by its cover but to be completely honest I mostly bought this book because I loved the cover so much.
Sacrificial Lamb has everything I want in a YA fantasy: a realistic main character, a supernatural world (in this case “Heaven”) and likable love interests that left me torn between who was my favorite character!
This book started out in an urban setting, focusing on Katie, a college student struggling with anxiety and the urge to self harm. Although triggering, I thought the topics were dealt with very well and there was no romanticizing of them which I truly appreciated.
In order to avoid spoilers I won’t say much more but the book sped up considerably once the plot left Earth. I loved the settings and descriptions of Heaven, and the twisting plot had me devouring the second half of the book in days.
My only small complaint was that I felt things were tied up too quickly, leaving me wanting more even though the major conflict was finished. I eagerly await the next books in the series, I want to see what happens with these characters.
This is an author to watch for sure! I’m certain this series will go down in history as one of the more famous YA fantasies!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSacrificial Lamb was different from what I expected, but in a very good way. More specifically, the plot and stakes are grittier than other YA novels of a similar type. The story mostly centers around Katie and Scotty, who have been together for three years. Katie suffers from anxiety, but her life seems pretty decent until a mysterious stranger from her past makes a sudden, and often unwelcomed, appearance.
The conflict isn’t just between Katie, Scotty, and Matthew (dude from Katie’s past), though. There are wars happening at the macrocosmic level that dragged Katie and Scotty into the struggle. I recommend this book for YA/paranormal fans. I look forward to future books in the series.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is not my normal type of book to read. I needed a small break from it and found this to be a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed it a lot.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2020Format: KindleSacrificial Lamb is a story that deals with anxiety, depression, and guilt, but also love and redemption. I admire how the author deals with these topics in a heartfelt, genuine way and makes them play an important part in the story.
From the beginning, I got pulled into the story and found it hard to put it down. The author takes a common fantasy trope—angels and demons—and gives them a unique twist with its own lore. I enjoyed getting to know how this world worked, and there are many more mysteries to learn about in following books!
The characters were relatable and had their own strengths and weaknesses, along with their own voice. I especially liked Amanda. The plot takes you on a windy road with constant twists and turns, and I had to keep reading to find out what happened next! I think it could use a little polishing as far as proofreading goes, but that did not detract from my enjoyment of the story.
If you enjoy angel/demon stories, stories that deal with topics like anxiety or depression, or simply enjoy a page-turner, you will like this book. I look forward to reading the next one.

Big FanReviewed in the United Kingdom on July 15, 20205.0 out of 5 stars A tasty lamb dish!!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWow, Sacrificial Lamb is a young adult fantasy that packs an emotional punch and will take you on a dark trip – through death, afterlife and beyond.
The story sees young Katie struggling with life, college, friends, family, and a boyfriend Scotty but getting through somehow despite having anxiety and a self-harm habit (trigger warning). Things are just about going OK until a handsome devil named Matthew (aren’t they all) turns up and Katie finds herself inexplicably and unnaturally drawn to him.
So far, so Twilight-with-a-twist, but as Katie struggles to understand her own emotions and decisions – Matthew draws her into an alternate world of secrets and betrayals. Could death be the only way out?
Alas not – the afterlife you see has its own problems and Katie is soon caught in the midst of an ancient supernatural war – no rest for the wicked (or the good). Will Katie fight for the angels or be corrupted for the other side?
The title might feel like a spoiler but there is a nice hard edge to this tale that could otherwise have easily been a bit twee. You think getting to Heaven would be all harps, clouds and feasting… Sorry but that’s not the case in Sacrificial Lamb, sure there are sweet cakes, chocolate milk and you can even order your own pet from a catalogue but something isn’t right.
As characters like Cain and Abel are introduced, the afterlife hots up and things get messy. I won’t spoil it for you but this is a unique spin on the heavenly realms – full metal angels of emotional manipulation can be devils in disguise…
Ashley Nicole is a strong new voice in the young adult fantasy genre and one I’d recommend checking out!!

AndyReviewed in the United Kingdom on July 23, 20204.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and engaging
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt's worth qualifying that I don't read this genre of book very often, but nevertheless I found 'Sacrificial Lamb' really engaging, a fast-paced story which constantly held my attention and kept me coming back for more. The characters were really well developed, and I felt a genuine interest in their development as the story developed. The book is also very creative, balancing traditional Christian beliefs about religion and the afterlife with a 'heaven' which isn't all it seems. I'm looking forward to reading the book's sequel and finding out what life (and death) has planned for Katie and Scott.
