Review

If ever there was a story that should be turned into a movie then this is it! But the movie would never live up to the story you're about to enjoy. The Chinese play the long game and for one General with visions of a One China World Power...he has been secretly making it happen. Little by little, thru the last few decades this General, acting on his own,has inserted nuclear explosives here in America. And have been hidden in almost all fifty states. It would have been a successful mission except for a fire in a small ,San Francisco Chinese eatery and a grizzled firefighter with a disregard for authorities. All the main players are fully fleshed out and even bouncing from the White House to the Great Hall in China it's very easy to find your way. Each chapter starts with a famous saying that sets the tone for the segment about to be read. The ending is a bit contrived but in all honesty it was absolutely perfect. Fifty is one of those books you'll read more than once and it just gets better each time. Top notch stuff. Vine Voice Amazon Reviewer

From the Back Cover

"To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself." Sun Tzu (~520 BC)"We have no experience in atomic war. So, how many will be killed can not be known. The best outcome may be that only half the population is left, and the second best may be that only one-third. When 900 million are left out of 2.9 billion, several five-year plans can be developed for the total elimination of capitalism and for permanent peace. It is not a bad thing." I was born in Durham, North Carolina on November 8, 1951. I attended NC State University from 1969 to 1972, majoring in mechanical engineering. Two problems: first, the drinking age back then was 18; second, I majored in engineering because all my friends majored in engineering (I found out the hard way that calculus and I didn't get along).

My mother's comment was, "I don't know what you're going to do, but you're not living here." So I enlisted in the US Army in 1972, during the Vietnam War, and found myself in the Infantry. I was lucky. I was never sent to Vietnam. After two years, I applied for the Army's Nuclear Power Plant Operator's School, graduated in 1975 with a specialty in Radiation Protection, and spent the next year teaching math at the school (God does have a sense of humor). After spending three years in Honolulu, working at the Tripler Army Medical Center, I left the army in November 1979 with a wife, a two year old son, and no job.

I started working at Three Mile Island Unit 2 in February 1980, 11 months after the accident (that's a complete separate novel). That started a career in nuclear power that lasted until 2012. I have written lesson plans, procedures and presentations galore (not exactly creative writing). Creative writing is different. You have to imagine a scene, place yourself inside it, and then describe what you are seeing in words (hopefully interesting words). I'm also a woodworker, a glazier and a sculptor. I have had work displayed in the Smithsonian in Washington, DC.

This is a well written book with an interesting plot and characters. The story is believable even though most will doubt that some of the plot pieces are probably pretty unlikely. Well worth the time to read it

I was hooked from beginning to end and was biting my nails in parts of this well written thriller. It's the first book I've read by this author and I just got books 2 and 3 to read in the trilogy. I love the characters and the story is addicting to read. It's unputdownable, exciting, fascinating and entertaining reading. I had received this book free through Author'sXP.com for a review.

I really wasn't expecting much, based on the cover. The book has good pacing, decent characters. I would have preferred a little more "tragedy," but was still a good read.

I got a little irritated by the time and location "stamps" on every chapter. Distracting.

A compulsive read and page turner which kept me up until the wee hours of the night. A totally believable plot even without some sci-fi bells and whistles added on at the end.

A very intriguing premise, and the critical points were an effective precautionary tale for any nuclear watchdogs. But for the US to save the country, there were too many reality-breaking surprises. I’d have liked to see the resolution develop in a more measured elimination rather than a last minute race against the firing squad clock.

Nonetheless, the story as presented unfolded in a well-plotted sequence and the significant characters were distinctive and memorable. I could accept the method used by the California pair to make their initial discoveries, and I am a fan of smart, capable women characters, so I was delighted by the defuser and the newbie analyst. It’s worth the read just to meet Kate and Amanda.

My main complaints are probably spoilers: I do agree that the Deus ex Machina intervention was a disappointment. I also thought the expert working to defuse the “randomly” triggered bomb was a bit too 007. And the unnecessary murder spree by the ambivalent Chinese delivery guy seemed like an abrupt reversal to ultimately set up revelations rather than enhance the psychological quandary that had been developing. These weak plot points rounded my 3½☆ down, but it’s still more interesting than the average SpyFi and worth the quick read.

I received a Kindle reader yesterday for Christmas. I had been needing something bigger than my phone, yet smaller than my iPad. This book popped up in my account. I don't remember downloading it, but I figured, "what the heck. Let's read it." Once I started I could barely put it down... I had to force myself each time.

Mr. Kellogg keeps readers on the edge of their seats holding their breath. Switching from various characters' points of view made me feel like I was actually watching a movie or even a bird's eye view of the story. i enjoyed the way you absolutely hated the bad guys since sometimes stories make me feel a bit of sympathy for them... not with this book! I kept rooting for the Americans and felt every heartbreak the characters did. I already have book 2 downloaded and ready to go. I'm on vacation until the 6th so maybe I can read the remaining 2 books in this series.
