Wooed by a Wicked Duke: A Sensual Marriage of Convenience Regency Historical Romance Adventure (Dukes Come Calling (Seductive Scoundrels) Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars (1,381)

He’s betrothed… but not to the woman who holds his heart.

Jessica Brentwood came to London determined to escape her past. With her father’s disgrace lingering like a shadow, she vows to uphold a flawless reputation during her first Season. But when she’s found in a compromising position—utterly innocent yet undeniably scandalous—with none other than the wicked Duke of Bainbridge, her plans for propriety are dashed. Offered a marriage of necessity, Jessica stuns Society by refusing. She’d rather face ruin than be bound to a notorious rake… no matter how much he stirs her curiosity.

Crispin Rowley, Duke of Bainbridge, has lived beneath the label of a rogue for years—some of it earned, much of it exaggerated. Betrothed since childhood to a woman he doesn’t love, he never imagined escape would come in the form of the spirited Miss Brentwood. He’s long admired her from a distance, but when a cruel scheme forces them together, his desire to protect her becomes something far more dangerous… and deeply personal.

As whispers fly and reputations hang by a thread, Crispin must choose between duty and the one woman who sees beyond the scandal. And Jessica must decide if she dares trust the man who claims to cherish her… even as the past threatens to destroy them both.

From the Author

Dearest Reader,

I'm especially excited about this Regency Romance! The heroine is loosely based on my
Be the Heroine Contest Winner last year. I've included several fun things my winner shared with me, and the book is dedicated to Jessica Todd White.

As you will learn when you read the book, Crispin isn't such a wicked duke, after all. His reputation
is, however, and the heroine isn't pleased to be caught in a compromising situation with him.

If you're fond of chickens, I'm betting you'll chuckle at the names Jessica picked for her "girls," and I threw in a little something extra to make them even funnier. I never know what my quirky sense of humor will contrive.

Keep your eyes open for James Brentwood's story next. Nope, he's not a duke. His is a sweet Valentine's story, and you've never met his heroine before.

Speaking of dukes...

Yes, historical authors are well aware there weren't a lot of dukes trotting about during the Regency era. But, because I write fiction, I get to create as many dukes as I want.

Happy reading!

xoxo
Collette

Jessica Brentwood was introduced to readers in Collette Cameron’s Only a Duke Would Dare when her disgraced father left the country for Australia. Since then, she moved in with her sister Theadosia and brother-in-law, Victor, the Duke of Sutcliffe, who is sponsoring her season. She is determined to be the epitome of decorum and not be exposed to even a hint of scandal. She unwittingly gets lured into a trap and finds herself caught in a scandal that will destroy her.

Crispin, the Duke of Bainbridge, only has eyes for Jessica and will do just about anything possible to woo her. Only one problem – he has been betrothed since childhood to a woman he cannot stand. He has been trying to break the betrothal without losing his many properties, but the woman and her father are being sticklers (even though she cannot stand him, either).

Crispin and Jessica find themselves embroiled in scandal; though both are completely innocent, it is enough to ruin them. Crispin offers for Jessica, who is reluctant to accept a marriage proposal based on need and duty, rather than on love. Can Crispin convince Jessica that marriage to her has been his dream for a while, and the proposal was not a complete whim?

My heart went out to Crispin and Jessica – innocent victims of two heartless and reckless individuals. Here are two loving, headstrong characters who are honest with each other and do not let their differences in station get in the way.

This is the 5th book in Collette Cameron’s Seductive Scoundrels series and many characters from previous books play wonderful secondary roles. This is a story involving mystery, death, revenge, humor, chickens (yes, chickens!), faith, and love. Although the book is part of the series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone. I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent reading the book.

Crispin Rolston, the Duke of Bainbridge has secretly longed for Jessica Brentwood from the first moment he met her, but he has never made his desire known as he is trapped in an unwanted betrothal. He has tried everything to dissolve the betrothal, including cultivating (and embellishing) a rakish reputation, in hopes that his betrothed, Lilith Brighton will call off the engagement. But so far, nothing has worked and it seems like Crispin will have to give up his dream of a love match.

Jessica has also been attracted to Crispin, but he is a rake and someone she would never consider for marriage – she already lives under a cloud of scandal thanks to her father and the only reason she is accepted at all is because her sister is the Duchess of Sutcliffe. As much as she likes Crispin, she will never risk her heart or her fragile reputation with a man like him. But when they are tricked into a compromising situation, marriage may be the only way to quash a scandal.

But Jessica still resists, Crispin is still betrothed and needs to end his engagement and prove to Jessica that she can trust her heart to him.

This was a cute, sweet story, but it was short and personally, I felt like there was too much going on in too short a story – I liked Crispin and Jessica, but their issues took the spotlight and I didn’t think they had enough time together to form a deep and abiding love. I did think they had great chemistry and if the story had been a bit longer I am sure their characters would have convinced me that they were meant to be. I did like the novella and it is a great addition to the series with mild love scenes, cameos and a HEA. While it was not my favorite, I did enjoy the book and would be happy to recommend it.

Jessica, thanks to her victor of a father, is a little shy but a kind hearted person. She loves her domestic animals to distraction which makes her a somewhat easy target for vicious, vile people. Since meeting the Duke of Bainbridge, she has had a tender that was not to be acknowledged.

Crispin, Duke of Bainbridge, has been betrothed to a manipulated, gain girl since he was twelve. Although he had no recourse, he has been trying to dissolve it for years. He wants to marry the love of his life, whomever that may be.

Lilith never understood why she had to marry Bainbridge. But her father ordered it so. Now she has meet someone she wishes to marry but her father won't give his consent. Being only a Viscount was not good enough for his daughter. Now she has hatched a plan to get what she wants or so she thinks.

Now in her first season, Jessica has to find a way to hide her feelings from showing. She hears degrading words about herself an escaped the ballroom. She gets a surprise as Lilith brings her a glass of lemonade. Talking to a person whom she believes is compassionate and understanding, Jessica does not anticipates the deception of being drugged.

Bainbridge trying to keep the beau haut ton from guessing his thoughts falls prey to Viscount Brookmoore's mis-shenanigans. What he gets is the surprise of his life.

To give more would be to spoil the book for you. It is a fun, enthralling, vibrant tail that will have you on the edge of your seat reading to the end. I could not put this down. I loved the characters and plot. It is an adventure of the mind to lose yourself in this story.

This could have been an ok enough book; but, for me, there just isn’t enough here. There is sufficient characters, clean romance, lots of intrigue. But beware! Foul language often with the use of God’s name in vain (if this is an issue for you.). It isn’t necessary, seems out of place, and makes the story writing seem elementary. I got the impression the usage wasn’t natural to the author, that she just found places to use it, hoping (wrongly) the her writing comes across as daring and impressive. It doesn’t work! I did finish the book, but this was a turn-off for me.

I was disappointed in this one. I expected so much more. The whole first chapter is her just walking about and thinking. It took forever to get to some sort of action. Once she stopped thinking it wasn't too bad. But I still had difficulty getting through it. Not up to her usual.

This was a most entertaining read, the story moved along at a good pace and it had very engaging characters. I always find Colette’s style of writing very easy to read and I love some of the turn of phrase that she uses. Jessica had thought about marriage but she wanted a love match similar to her sisters. Crispin, Duke of Bainbridge has always wanted Jessica but was bethrothed when he was a child to a bride he doesn’t want. There are a number of happenings that cause a series of events. This can be read in an afternoon but it is a very satisfying read.

This fifth book in the Seductive Scoundrels series is an excellent addition, bringing us the story of Jessica Brentwood who we first met in Book One. I liked her then and certainly more now. This young lady has done extremely well in dealing with her father’s sins and has worked hard to become someone to be admired in her own right. So it was horrifying for her when she found herself the victim of a cruel hoax, alongside with Crispin, Duke of Bainbridge, who secretly loves her. Unfortunately for him he has also been betrothed - unwillingly - for a long time and has tried to have this terminated by letting others believe that he is a Rogue. Together they find themselves naked in a conservatory, having been drugged and set upon by Lilith Brighton (Crispin’s betrothed) and Lord Brookmire, a really nasty fortune hunter. It isn’t how Crispin wanted to become Jessica’s husband and is the kind of scandal that Jessica was always determined to avoid. However, even though Brighton and Brookmire are not finished with them, Crispin and Jessica do come through the scandal to find their HEA.
There are many gems in this story, not least the captivating language that Collette continues to use. Words just flow, and I love that. For the others, read the story for yourself! I promise that you won’t be disappointed.
