Fairy Rose: Portal fantasy time travel romance (Sedona Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.8 out of 5 stars (33)

Fairy Rose is the first in a portal fantasy romance set in a world of psychic premonitions sure to entice all readers who enjoy the spirit world. A adventure quest with found family and a second chance at love.

Accepting who she is makes her entire life a lie—and puts her in grave danger.

Lara Clint may be a daemon hunter, but she’s still not used to hearing voices in her head. Why are there whispers in her mind telling her to “remember her destiny?” After witnessing the reappearance of a dangerous fallen angel, Lara suspects that these two events are connected and vows to find answers in order to save her hometown of Sedona. The truth, however, turns her world upside down—and reconciling with her past proves as difficult as completing the quest she’s fated to fulfill.

Rafe Avery has one goal: to replace the cursed black rose of the Faerie Nation with the red rose of love and restore the balance of power between Seelie and Unseelie. Too bad the human he’s tasked to aid in doing this doesn’t want to accept who she is. Rafe needs to convince Lara to embrace her fate while struggling with an attraction neither of them can deny.

If they fail to restore the rose, the portal between worlds will lock forever, leaving humankind at the mercy of a vengeful immortal. Can their love break the curse and bring evil to justice?

When life goes sideways, embracing the adventure is the fastest way to set things right.

This is book one of the Sedona series. It’s a second chance time travel psychic romance. This was a refreshing new mix of fairy telling from what I’ve read before. Interesting read with lots of detail, world building, and an intense plot. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I don’t know where to start. *Mild thematic spoilers in the next two sentences* You could say this book is about overcoming trauma. You could also say it’s about a fairy man slowly forcing down the well-established boundaries of a strong, independent woman in a sexually charged battle of attrition until she cries and he convinces her that it’s her fault that the world is ending. The text is full of writing and copyediting errors, but they are mostly surface level. The real problems I think are the pacing, lack of plot framework, and under-explained details. Never before have I read a book with so much exposition and so little explanation. I felt like I needed a glossary and maybe a textbook just on the lore. The way information is shared between characters in the book is part of this problem, I think. There is no “in” for the audience to know what’s going on because somehow every character seems to already just know things. This also deprives us of a lot of revelatory moments where we could see deeper into a characters psyche or at least learn more about their relationships based on their reactions, but instead they just move on to the next random plot thing. Speaking of plot things, this book has like 5 climaxes (and not the fun kind, which I am sad to say start out strong, and then are basically totally forgotten by the end). This is too many largely unrelated big plot moments for one book. Some of them are totally inconsequential, and everything is resolved immediately after, often in ways we don’t even get to see. The last two are both very important, but they feel disconnected from one another, and honestly, they totally undercut each other’s impact. I think pacing is the issue here. It’s like the book doesn’t trust you to be interested for long enough to slow down and decompress a bit, which is funny because if there’s one good thing I have to say about this book, it’s that it’s not boring! I think some of the descriptions are great, and possibly against my better judgement, I read the whole thing pretty quickly. I was really aggravated by all the things I just discussed pretty much the entire time I was reading, but personally, I am very entertained by things that aggravate me. If you are like me, you will probably also enjoy this book. And by enjoy, I mean maniacally indulge a spiteful determination to finish it. (Side note: maple leaf oaks don’t smell like maple. BY RIGHTS, RAFE SHOULD SMELL LIKE VINEGAR.)

I received this book for free and I am volunteering this review.

I don't normally go for Paranormal Romance, but when Susanna Burney (one of my favorite narrator's) offered up a copy, I couldn't resist...
I found that I enjoyed myself immensely, and true to form, Susanna's narration was excellent, giving the perfect voice to all of Jaylee Austin's characters.
I've read stories of the fairy before but this one surprised me. As she blended in yggdrasil (tree of life) with shamanic magic as well... And, in of all the books I've run across, Mab (winter queen, of the winter court) is never seen as nice, but Fairy Rose turns that notion on it's ear.
There is some consensual adulting, but that doesn't offend, or get in the way of the storyline!
All in all, Fairy Rose was a very fun listen!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I received a copy of this book from the author via Hidden Gem Books in an exchange for an honest review.

I liked this book and thought the storyline was interesting. I struggled a little as the book was a little complicated. There was so much happening and different characters, and different points of view that I struggled to understand it all. I also felt like there wasn't a lot of romance. The two characters were fated to be together but when they finally met it seemed anti-climatic and I felt there wasn't the opportunity for the characters to grow together or even get to know one another.

I liked the storyline and thought the concept of the book was interesting. The language of the book was different and really helped add to the book and pull the reader into the setting and story. I loved the Rafe character and really enjoyed reading from his point of view.

Overall, it was a good book that I had some struggles with, but the overall story is good!

Lara, human with sidhe DNA and Rafe a Sidhe warrior and protector have to overcome personal obstacles and fears in order to protect humanity and fae. This is not a book to open if you have work to do. I read it in one day stopping to eat and feed my dogs. This is the best fantasy I have read in a long time. I love the blending of myths from two diverse cultures. I only found one annoyance; on page 224 the phrase decisions that effect your life should say "affect". I received an ARC of this book from Hidden Gems. This is my honest review freely given.

This is my first book by this author and I can honestly say that if this is the general quality of what she writes the I simply cannot wait to read more. The characters have a richness and a vibrancy that makes them larger than life and they leap of the pages into your life. I challenge anyone not to fall head over heels for Rafe. He is just wonderful and when he and Lara start working together you could see that he had a beautiful nature but was also strong, protective and determined. The two have a great chemistry and I enjoyed the way that they sparked off each other but can Rafe get Lara to face reality and can they overcome what is headed their way?

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
