The Crystal Clipper by B. Roman is the first book in The Moon Singer series. David Nickerson lost his hearing as a child andlost his mother to a car accident. The same accident put his sister in a wheel chair. When his father loses his job due to a shady deal, Davidcan no longer sit back and do nothing. His aunt gives him a chance atchanging his fate when she gives him a crystal that whisks him away on a magical ship to another world. David encounters the mysterious Ishtarwho sends him on a quest to rescue Ishtar's daughter, who has beenimprisoned and forced to sing for an evil entity. Through his newfoundabilities, he discovers a great destiny that will pull him into thefight between good and evil, and foretells of a life he'll risk his ownto save.
B. Roman has created a hero not seen in a lot of fantasy adventures.David is deaf so he faces many struggles, but this is only a small partof his journey. He's easy to connect with because he feels powerless, unable to save his dad's job or help his sister walk again. His journeyin this other world helps him process certain aspects of his life. David wishes to sail away to a magical world and this is exactly whathappens. The tone is similar to that of Dorothy's adventure through Ozwhere she discovers people there who remind her of those from her ownlife, which makes you wonder if the magical place David is whisked offto is real.
B. Roman uses a rich mythology tied to crystals and music as the basisof the magic. The mystical components make it feel almost like a fairytale. The connection to music is interesting, because you can't hear the lyrics as they're sung, yet it's easy to see how powerful their placeis in the story. B. Roman pulls you into this world, into the mysticalbeauty of it all, and gives a fresh perspective on the power of music.David's bond with his sister is really sweet. She acts as his guidingforce, someone who truly believes in him and looks up to him. His driveto find her is what keeps him pulling through his adventure until hefigures out his place as a hero. The Crystal Clipper is a fun adventurewith strong characters and a stunning magical world.

I've just added a new suspense thriller, "A Man's Face," that chronicles an attorney's quest to find the man who killed his mother, and whose life spirals out of control when he encounters the treacherous Ibarra family.
"Before the Boy: The Prequel to The Moon Singer Series will answer all the questions that arise in the original 3 books. It's a chilling prequel to the inspiring series, a paranormal delight as the main character tries to escape the afterlife after she learns that she died too soon! "The Immortal Rose Wyndham: The Beginning" chronicles the Moon Singer series from 1750 France to 21st Century California.
To see my children's books, go to the Barbara Roman Author Page:
"The Prince Who Was A Piccolo" is my latest children's book with an enchanting musical theme about an unhappy prince searching for his true identity.
"Alicia and the Light Bulb People in Star Factory 13." It is an enchanting tale of friendship, courage, and realizing your star potential through the magic of believing! Mystical illustrations by Vladimir Cebu.
Another book, as Barbara Roman, is "Hubert in Heaven," is a delightful children's story, with a Christmas theme, and a message for all of us who are too attached to our hi-tech "toys."
Since childhood, I've been torn between two worlds: writing and singing. It's difficult to serve "two masters," as they say, but I was compelled to do so. When I was not singing, I was writing; when I was not writing, I was singing.
I've learned, for me, that one creative expression nurtures the other. Much of my writing has a musical theme somewhere in the plot, or is the plot. Whether it's in my non-fiction writing about the power of music itself, in picture books and stories and, of course, in writing music and lyrics for songs.
It is natural, therefore, that my trilogy of adventures for young readers, "The Moon Singer" (formerly "The Secrets of the Moon Singer") has its roots in musical theories and metaphors, entwined with the magic and mystery of metaphysical concepts and matters of ethics, faith, compassion, love, and heroism. Book 1 (The Crystal Clipper) and Book 2 (The War Chamber) lay the groundwork for this power of music of the highest order. Book 3 (The Wind Rose) pulls it all together and will, I hope, give readers a complete understanding of the importance of music in our lives and in the world.
On the other side of the spectrum, my suspense novels ("Whatever Became of Sin?" and "A Man's Face") are a departure from a higher consciousness to the mundane world of flawed humans, amoral people committing immoral crimes and eventually paying the price for their transgressions. Penning a thriller sort of grounds me and helps to clear my mind of darker thoughts so I can go back to writing empowering fantasies.
I hope you will delight in their messages just as I was delighted to write them.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe Crystal Clipper (Book 1 in The Moon Singer series) is a magical fantasy adventure with a good message. Well written, as to be expected from this incredibly prolific author, we follow the adventures of its main character, David Nickerson, a deaf teen who has seen his share of tragedy, with his mother having died in an accident and his sister, Sally, now confined to a wheelchair. When his sister mysteriously disappears one day, David resorts to using crystals which he was told had magical powers, and to that end, the crystals cast him into another dimension, a supposed "paradise" of twisted evil. David must must walk the road he now finds himself on if he ever hopes to find his sister. There is a twisted end, a bonus which you don't see coming - and for that, you'll just have to read the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a whimsical retelling of the age-old David and Goliath story imbued with colorful characters as unique as young David’s crystal collection. The goliath in this case revolves around his dad’s workplace. The company is for sale, and that unfortunate fact would leave his father unemployed. Based on his dad’s talent, David smells a rat and wants to find out what’s going on. If, for no other reason than to help his disabled sister, Sally.
Time however is a blend of the past and the future, entwined with the present. “A hole in reality is a psychic phenomenon, measurable only by your own metaphysical awareness.” In other words, hold on to your hat, because David is about to go for a sail of a lifetime. He needs to right the wrongs and find truth aboard the sleek white clipper that magically transports David through that hole in his reality.
Once he lands, he has to save Princess Saliana who is high up in the Prism Palace’s highest tower. There’s a Glass Snake, a High Priestess, a Gypsy and characters that seem remarkably like people David already knows.
The story is enjoyable and the descriptions vivid. Find out what happens to David, Sally and his dad. Will David make it home or end up in a Glass Volcano? Will treachery and mayhem rule or will evil be left powerless, when facing the light of truth? Read The Crystal Clipper and find out!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWow‼️Read it all in one fell swoop and loved everything about it but the ending. When you give your characters miracles, they should get to keep them‼️I realize your target audience is probably for the young, but you know some of us Granny’s are still young enough at heart to enjoy them. I loved that the people on the far away mystical Island mirrored David’s family & the office people where his father worked ! I’m glad at least some of what young David accomplished were permanent changes.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe Crystal Clipper is an imaginative and fantastical story about a teenager named David Nickerson who, through the mysterious workings magic crystals, goes on an amazing and dangerous adventure to try to help his ailing and missing sister. From the start of the story, David seems to bear the weight of his family. His mother died tragically, his father is about to lose his job, and his sister is in a wheelchair – and then goes missing!
Roman’s writing is well suited for young readers, but as an adult I found her story truly engaging. Her story is well told, and her keen sense of dialogue and human emotion kept the pages turning for me.
It might be tough at times to keep track of all the characters and all the metaphysical elements of the story, but it all pays off in the end. I really like Roman’s theme of youth empowerment, and standing up for oneself and others, especially family. In this regard, I think the book has some great encouragement to give young people.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhen you are into some magic, where you, as in dreams, can come at places and in situations that you never could imagine when you were awake...
When you love exciting, heroic stories...
When you love the good guys win and there is a great message in the book...
Then I recommend The Crystal Clipper, the first book of ‘The Moon Singer Trilogy’ by Barbara Roman because this book has it all.
I was curious and started reading and kept reading. The story of the deaf kid David Nickerson, whose mother died, sister sits in a wheelchair and his dad is maltreated by his boss, is so intriguing but energizing.
Yes, as I said before, there is a good ending, but not all problems are solved at the end. That’s why I couldn’t wait and started the next book of this series The War Chamber to see what adventures, what dreams David Nickerson is going to do next.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a fantastic fantasy for the young. There are challenges, danger, and the beginning awakening of love. More importantly, it stresses the family through all the trials whether in this world or the fantasy realm the Crystal Clipper sails to; whether it is on a real sea or the nether air is up to your imagination. It illustrates how one with physical challenges can stumble into a situation, but with determination persavere against all odds. Enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI thought this book was a bit simple and clumsy. But perhaps adults shouldn't be reviewing "kids" books. Not a bad read, but I'm not compelled to see what the next adventure will be as the characters never developed enough for me to care about them.

JulesReviewed in the United Kingdom on January 19, 20255.0 out of 5 stars THRILLING FANTASY ADVENTURE FOR TEENAGERS
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDavid Nickerson is a boy with a unique persona and outlook on life. Blighted by a childhood illness which results in him becoming deaf he spends his time with crystals and his close knit family. After a strange lightning storm occurs, David’s sister disappears and he unwittingly becomes captain of a magical sailing ship which is capable of astral flight. He embarks on a journey to find his younger sibling and along the way becomes embroiled in helping the occupants of a strange land who are enslaved by the evil glass snake.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed. The character David was likeable - he was caring and brave and his relationship with his family was heartwarming. With an action filled plot which to me possessed fairy tale elements, I would highly recommend The Crystal Clipper. A fab read.
yopReviewed in Spain on December 24, 20205.0 out of 5 stars A thought provoking story
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a well thought out book which should appeal to young teens. It is the first in a series and tells the story of David, a deaf boy who is trying to deal with the trials and tribulations which life has dealt him and his family. David has a fascination for crystals and his aunt gifts them to him every time she comes back home from her travels.
One day, he is cleaning the crystals when he finds himself aboard The Crystal Clipper, sailing on a tumultuous sea of glass to a cold, dark land. As the story unfolds, the reader and David become aware that he is living in a juxtaposed timeline with characters that are reminiscent of those in his real world. (This reminded me of “The Wizard of Oz” only on a much darker level.)
I loved the way in which the writer subtly introduces each new character in the dark world. They are portrayed in such a way that through subtle traits, the reader can associate them with the original characters in David's other real-life dimension.
David must complete certain tasks in order to restore the dark island back to its original glory. Can he complete his mission without falling under the spell of the wicked High Priestess Jaycina? Will his actions affect his real life? I'm not going to tell you! Read the book and find out.
SashadooReviewed in the United Kingdom on March 29, 20165.0 out of 5 stars Excellent modern fantasy. A Well deserved 5 stars.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEqually entertaining for both adults and teens, It reminded me of my feelings when first seeing The Wizard of Oz in my early youth. The Crystal Clipper is a beautifully woven modern fantasy, that features yound David Nickerson, a deaf boy who has adapted to his disability by becoming an expert in signing and in interpreting the vibrations of his surroundings. With his mother dead, David's father faces losing his job and his sister is confined to a wheechair. His interest in crystals and their properties eventually leads him into a surreal and at times frightening new world where nothing is quite as it seems.Whicked away from his home on board a mysterious ship, The Moon Singer, David finds himself involved in a quest to not only free the people of the world he eventually arrives in, but also to find his missing sister who he is led to believe has been taken to this strange and alien land. What follows is a series of adventures that take David into the mysterious and life-threatening palace of the evil ruler of this un-named world where friends are few and the dangers many. No spoilers from me, except to say that there is nothing entirely predicatable in this story and the ending will I'm sure leave readers eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. Thoroughly enjoyable with some excellent characterisations.
