Addressing the stress of being a primary caregiver was awesome and as someone who studied public health I'm so happy to see a character not only being normal but learning to cope and realistic options being put forth. Not all novels teach but sometimes they can educated. I loved that. -Amazon Reviewer

- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love a good story about lifelong friends experiencing the ups and downs of life. Brunch at Ruby’s is no exception. The book centers three thirty-something year old women who’ve experienced myriad ups and downs of life, and share it over a meal at one of Atlanta’s beloved diners.
Renee left the nest but came back to care for an ailing father. Debra is a married mother who finds herself embroiled in a scandal at her school. And Maxine is an upwardly mobile real estate mogul who just wants to find her match.
Brunch at Ruby’s stands out to me because as much as this book is a romance, it’s about so much more. The complexities of life, love, and career all play out in different ways for the three women. Even their friendship is complex. There’s an honesty here about the unspoken challenges of adulthood and it plays out differently for each of the three women.
I had such conflicted feelings about the main characters while reading this book. So often books are written to make the reader root for the main characters simply because they’re the focus. With this book, however, you see the good, bad, and ugly with Renee, Debra, and Maxine. It was clear that they all held some culpability in their circumstances, even when they weren’t willing to take responsibility. White’s ability to craft characters with depth and realism was central to making this book so compelling.
Aside from how they were portrayed, the story itself was hard to put down. The drama was high, as was the anxiety about how each woman’s situation would unfold. There was even angst about whether their friendship would be able to withstand the issues they all faced. While I couldn’t personally relate to every aspect of their situations, I could take out bits and pieces of experiences I had or those close to me had endured. And for that reason, it was easy to become invested in Renee, Debra, and Maxine as they worked to figure things out.
To say I recommend this book is obvious. I couldn’t put it down. It’s clear that White sets the stage for future books in this series, so I look forward to seeing what comes next.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThree stories in one. Brunch at Ruby's is nothing if it isn't one hell of an investment. I believe DL White did an amazing job of writing about these ladies separate lives and interweaving them in the fabric of their friendship with one another. The three protags (Debra, Maxine, Renee) are real people. Real friends. And the way they live and breathe for one another, while also openly chastising each other, was not lost on me as a reader. There were a number of emotionally charged moments and plenty of interpersonal conflict to keep the story moving. Unpredictable but not unbelievable. All in all a very good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDL White has done it: written a wonderful book about friendship and all its foibles in such a way that you don't want the book to end. In Brunch at Ruby's, we meet lifelong friends Debra, Renee and Maxine when all three are a crossroads in their lives: Maxine is convinced she's met Mr. Right (based on standards her mother has instilled in her since her youth--wealthy and cultured and above her station), Debra has been caught in a clinch with her lover and the s*** is about to hit the fan at the school where she's principal (especially since her lover is the Athletic Director at the school) and Renee is struggling to deal with her father and his quickly declining case of dementia.
White takes us through the highs and lows of the women's lives in alternating points of view and does so with a deft hand. There is NO head-hopping here; instead, we have confidently drawn characters whose voices are unique and whose storylines are differentiated enough that we understand all the time whose story we're following. This pleases me as there are far too many books out there told from alternating POV in which less confident authors jump from head to head mid-paragraph and end up confusing readers.
What I love about Brunch at Ruby's is that DL White has taken everyday life and made it so compelling that you don't want to put the book down. This is a story every woman can relate to--the ups and downs of friendships, marriage problems, dealing with ageing parents--and it does so without becoming maudlin or predictable. Loved this book! Looking forward to DL White's next release!

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed Brunch at Ruby’s . This is my first book by this author; I like the way she develops her principle characters. And although Max got on my nerves in the beginning, she grew on me . The three friends are so different and yet the friendship endures, like in real life. I’ve been friends with two women for over 35 years and the 3 of us are totally different except in our devotion to each other. Thank you. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to enjoy these three special ladies.

Brunch at Ruby’s by D.L. White is fun and fierce novel about friendship, love, and good food. Readers will want to be the fourth place at the table and that is not just because the descriptions of the food will make you hungry.
I really enjoyed this book. It is very easy to compare this to other well-known books about female friendship because this is a book about women and the support system we all need as we navigate the curves that life throws at us. But this book easily takes it place at the front of the pack, which is a great feat for a self-published novel.
I absolutely enjoyed this book. It was so easy for me to get a picture in my head of who these women are. And I became wrapped up in their stories quickly. Each character is well-written and a whole character. Sometimes when there are a few main characters the reader is only able to get half the story, but White does a great job of writing their complete stories. Maxine was my favourite character (I love a character with a great closet) but I found myself moved and invested in all of them.
I really hope that there will be more to come at Ruby’s. Maxine, Debra, and Renee are three characters that I would love to visit again and again. There is definitely more to their stories and I can’t wait to find out what that is.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA very pleasant read. I liked the way that the chapters rotated around the main characters. I did really find Maxine very bitchy and annoying until she settled herself down at the end of the story. So pleased that Renee was happy with Malcolm. Wasn,t impressed with Debra whom i thought should grow up and act her age. The book got you involved so the author achieved what she set out to do. One or two mistakes but it was a free read. Enjoyable.

Believable and very well crafted. Like having a seat at the next door booth and eavesdropping.
