Black Diamond: A Boarding School Sports Romance (Stark Springs Academy Book 1) Kindle Edition
No one here tolerates wimps.
If you can’t handle it, leave.
Welcome to Stark Springs, Colorado, home to the most talented young athletes in the world. When Roxie Slade snaps into a pair of skis, there’s no one on Sugarville Mountain in Vermont who can keep up with her. Not even the boys. Still, Roxie was shocked when she received a scholarship to Stark Springs Academy, a boarding school that churns out Olympians in each graduating class. Entering as a high school junior, Roxie can’t wait to learn from renowned coaches and train with the fastest ski racers from all over the globe. But upon arrival, Roxie discovers that Stark Springs lives under its own set of rules, and it appears one boy plays dictator.
Ryker Black is not friendly and Roxie cannot fathom why everyone wants to be his friend. Sure, he’s gorgeous and rides a snowboard like it’s his fifth limb, but he’s cold, ruthless, and holds way too much power over the Stark Springs population. Roxie won’t put up with it. She’s here to train, and she doesn’t care about impressing anyone off the slopes. The only problem? Ryker Black doesn’t permit defiance. Not without consequences.

About the author

Ali is a USA Today Bestselling author of sports romance books. She has always loved to read, especially when there's a happily ever after, but found that there weren't enough books out there featuring girl athletes. So, she decided to work on that. Like the heroines in her books, Ali is an athlete, with running and skiing her favorite sports these days. Ali hails from Vermont and now lives in her own happily-ever-after in Colorado with her husband, two sets of twins, and golden retriever Pancake. When she's not pursuing an outdoor adventure, Ali's less healthy passions include ice cream, coffee, and beer.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love Ali Dean’s sports romances. It’s been that way since I read the first in her Pepper Jones series and walked away totally addicted both to the romance and the feeling of really being an insider on the sport (cross country in that case). That’s probably why I glommed on Black Diamond when I saw it. If anything this book was even better than the Pepper Jones books (a very high bar as those books are so superb that I’ve re-read that series several times). So much so that I’ve addictively binge read through Double Black and Black Ice too. Why? Because not only do we once again get so far into the head of a top athlete as to really feel like an insider in the sport itself, in this case skiing, but we also get high business intrigue and a real thriller of a suspense. Roxie and Ryker’s romance in Stark Springs Academy series is also simply beautifully done. The series has reached a logical stopping point at book 3, but I’m not going to call it a trilogy as I’m hoping for more (hey, there’s precedent here: the Pepper Jones stories reached logical stopping points at times but the author still found ways to continue the series with new novels that worked beautifully). But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - each of the books in this series definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that this series is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend each book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNow I gotta be honest here. I liked the Pepper series a tadly better. Maybe because it's the original? Maybe because I LOVED her so much. Oh Pepper!
As for this series, it gets off to a great start, but something was missing. Girl arrives, boy is mean. They fight. They like each other. All is ok? I think the problem was no cliffhangers, no tension to make you go, "OMG I MUST READ THE NEXT BOOK." Am I crazy? There's a tiny hint that something will go wrong. but the threat is too far in the background that it seems like it's almost glossed over. You will understand when you finish the book.
But I loved the female main character, Roxie, who is a tough girl who says what it is. Love it. The guy she has a love/hate relationship with though.. Ryker is such a jerk that I wanted to kick him to the last planet in this galaxy. Like omg, I hate guys with huge egos and especially guys who are so controlling.
I hope she continues to say what she thinks because he needs it. I hope she won't be the girl who falls in love then bends because of it.
This series was also interesting because it's about skiing. I don't ski. I stink at it. The one time I tried, I kept falling and then threw my sticks down the hill in a fit of rage. Yep, that's me. But reading this series makes me want to try it again. I always loved speed. I never thought of speed with skiing. I know. Odd.
I can't wait to read the second book because I am hoping to see some surprises and twists. Ali Dean is just a fantastic writer, so I am sure that she has some waiting for us in the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBlack Diamond (Stark Springs Academy #1) was a great read by Ali Dean. Stark Springs Academy is not a place for people who are weak. If you cant handle it there then you need to leave. Stark Springs, Colorado is home to some of the most talented young athletes in the world. Roxie Slade is a skier who most people cant keep up with, boy or girl. She received a scholarship to the academy She quickly learns that Stark Springs lives under its own set of rules where one boy plays dictator. Ryker Black isn’t friendly to anyone, especially Roxie. He doesn’t permit defiance without consequences. I enjoyed reading this book and cant wait to read more by the author.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI am such a fan of the Pepper Jones books, and was excited to read more of Dean's work. In Black Diamond, Dean introduces us to Stark Academy. Stark is a winter sports academy, where only the cream of the crop survive. Our heroine, Roxie is a latecomer to the academy and on scholarship. These are not the only characteristics that set her apart at Stark, as she is one of the few fall under the spell of Ryker Black.
Things I liked
-I really liked the sports angle. I loved that in the Pepper books, and I love it here.
-I liked Roxie. I thought she had a lot of fire, and I loved when she focused it to accomplish a goal.
-I liked the soapy drama. This one had some real over-the-top stuff, and sometimes that stuff is fun to read.
-There were some great moments between Ryker and Roxie. There were a lot of aggravating moments, but there were good ones too, and I liked the ending a lot.
Overall: A promising start to a new series that pulled me into the wonderful world of winter sports.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love Ali Dean and this book was great, actually one of my favorites. I have read and reread it so many times I lost count. I love Roxie and Ryker, I love all the (slightly unrealistic, but where would the fun be it it wasn't ) teen drama combined with the world of competetive sports.
