The Lord and the Wallflower: A Humorous Wallflower Family Saga Regency Romantic Comedy (The Culpepper Misses Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars (861)

He’s a vicar with a past. She’s a wallflower with secrets.
And Society has no idea what to do with either of them.

Brette Culpepper adores the glittering whirl of London society—especially the lively verbal sparring she shares with Alexander Hawksworth, the devilishly handsome young vicar who unsettles her far more than he should. She may be a wallflower by reputation, but Brette hides sharp wit, a courageous heart, and family secrets that could shatter everything she hopes for.

Alex spent years burying his reckless youth beneath duty and discipline. But Brette tempts him to abandon his hard-won respectability and reach for something more. When he unexpectedly inherits an earldom, he dares to imagine a future with her…until he is accused of murdering the previous earl.

With Alex’s reputation in ruins and Brette threatened with an arranged marriage to a man she fears, their tender, slow-growing affection becomes entangled in danger, scandal, and secrets long buried. To claim the happily ever after they both yearn for, they must uncover a killer, clear Alex’s name, and defy the forces determined to tear them apart.

Though this book can be read as a stand alone, most readers prefer to read the series in order.

From the Author

Dearest Reader!

I knew from the moment Brette Culpepper met Vicar Alexander Hawksworth in THE EARL AND THE SPINSTER and she thought he was a valet, that those two needed their own romance.

Though THE LORD AND THE WALLFLOWER is a tad more serious in parts than the two previous books in the series, there are threads of humor and the devotion the Culpepper misses have for each other doesn't wane a jot.

Brette turned out to be a much more complex character than I'd first imagined, and as for Alex . . . Well, you'll have to read the book to find out his secrets!

The book can be read as a stand-alone, but I'd recommend reading the first books in the series to catch all the behind-the-scenes fun to give the reader a better understanding of events in THE LORD AND THE WALLFLOWER..

xoxo
Collette

This is the story of Brette, Brooke's sister, and Alexander Hawksworth, Unlike the first two books, there is an immediate attraction between them. Alex entered the church out of duty not desire. His cousin is the Earl of Wycombe who has run through his wife's dowry with his drinking and gambling instead of caring for those who are dependent upon him. Alex 's friendship with both Brooke's and Blythe's husbands goes back years and ensures him a place in society along with his handsome looks. Brette receives astonishing news - she is not a younger daughter of Brooke's parents, but Brooke's mother's niece - her sister's daughter with the younger son of Duke. When that gossip gets out, she is shunned by many. Added to the insult, the attorney does not think her parents ever married. Alex cares nothing of her background and offers to marry her. But Brette refuses him, not wanting him given society's boot as well. All this came about when her father died and left a will and all to Brette. She asks the attorney to keep checking for proof of a marriage. But the unexpected happens - Alex's cousin and young son die in a fire and he inherits a bankrupt earldom. Added to the drama, his grandmother forbids his association with Brette and is instrumental in spreading gossip. The confrontation between grandson and grandmother is priceless! To make matters worse, the current Duke, Brette's uncle, is determined to marry her off to a 70 year old debauched Marquis after he is appointed her guardian. Here comes the rescue party - Heath, Tristan and Alex! Very entertaining and fun story with heartwarming moments and moments of man's worst qualities - greed, selfishness, indifference, jealousy. But it shows love not only between Brette and Alex, but the love and devotion that makes a family regardless of blood.

This story kept me turning the page, but given how much happened in the last 10% of the book, I almost want to describe it as slow. So much still needed to be resolved, I was shocked when I saw I was at the 90% mark.

I enjoyed the smitten hero, though he seemed a little obtuse as to the real reason the heroine was hesitant to accept his proposal. The intelligent heroine was refreshing. She actually helps save herself by being aware of her surroundings at the end instead of running willy-nilly into danger. But their courtship was nonexistent, and with a maturity rating barely above PG, it was pretty underwhelming as an adult historical romance.

What’s missing from this story are all the parts that have the readers sharing in the romance and the intrigue. Too much occurs off the page. One minute the evil grandmother is threatening to ruin the heroine, the next she is helping her grandson save her. All of the stuff that led to the change of heart and her knowledge of the nefarious plot against the heroine is just a retelling of an event that the reader didn’t experience. The evil uncle, his plot to steal the heroine’s inheritance, and the resolution to the fire that killed the old Earl are barely blips in this book. I was scratching my head about what actually DID occur and wondering if much of the story had been mercilessly edited out.

Still, it is better than average even if it didn’t live up to my expectations. I’m much more picky when I must purchase a book outside of my Kindle Unlimited subscription. If partial stars were allowed, I’d probably give this 3.5.

P.S. I have zero understanding of why the hero was considered a rogue.

Brooke: Wagers Gone Awry by Collette Cameron
Brooke Culpepper is trying to manage her sister and cousins, and keep her family’s dairy farm afloat since her father died 5 yrs ago. Since she wasn’t born a man, her cousin Sheridan inherited the dairy farm and was supposed to care for them however, he never bothered to show up after her father’s death to help them. However he only helped himself and left it up to Brooke to pay him his monthly income from the dairy farm so they could remain living there.

Heath, the Earl of Ravensdale won the dairy farm from Sheridan, and decides he wants to sell that property right away. When Heath shows up at the farm in the pouring rain, he finds Brooke and her sister and cousins. He is intrigued by her and doesn’t want to throw them out. Since he doesn’t want the property he decides to leave and decide what to do and then return and discuss it with Booke. However, Duffen the family’s crazy employee who is like a grandfather decides to take matters into his own hands and off the Earl. Duffen doesn’t manage it that well. While Brooke is nursing Heath back to perfect health she offers him a wager to keep her farm, however if she loses it will change her and the girls life forever. Will she lose or keep her farm, or will she lose her heart

    Blythe: Schemes Gone Amiss
In the first book you meet both Blythe and Lord Leventhorpe, and their witty banter and dislike for each other is riveting and continues into Schemes Gone Amiss, but takes a wonderful turn!

Tristan is only helping his friend Heath when he agrees to be on hand to help out with introducing the Culpepper's into society. He never thought that the sharp tongue Miss Blythe Culpepper would break down the walls he erected to keep people out after an incident that happened in his past.

Blythe would rather be on her family's dairy farm, but now she has to conform to the rules of society of the town. It's going to be hard to do with Tristan around. Especially since he has started to show her the real Tristan and her feelings towards him start to change. Throw in a scheming Miss Sanford who has her sights set on marrying Tristan, the snake Mr. Phillips, and a love sick pup Mr. Burlington and it makes one story that you won't want to miss out on.

    Brette: Intentions Gone Astray
I don’t want to give everything away. I will say I’ve loved this series and I cannot wait for the other Ladies to get their books. They are delightful reads, that is hard to put down!

Sweet, heartwarming romance with an alluring mixture of entralling wit, delectable humour and lighthearted fun that cleverly entwines dark undertones, encased in malicious unscrupulous plotting, to keep your attention engaged and your anticipation mounting. Resulting in another fabulous addition to an already magical series!!
Meeting each Culpepper miss is an adventure in itself, one brimming with vibrant charm, sisterly devotion and is sure to shower you will an array of enjoyable antics and wit that will wholeheartedly adhere the ladies to your heart. With the addition of their handsome swains. Each in their own way fighting their own internal battles and unavoidable, instanteous, beguiling attraction to their Culpepper soulmate makes for the perfect romance embellished by entertaining and touching twists and turns. Alex and Brette's tale has all this in abundance and more!!!
On the surface Alex appears dazzlingly suave and carefree yet underneath a lonely man, desperately besotted by Brette, hides wallowing in his misguided feelings of worthlessness fed by his dia financial circumstances and the lack of security he can offer. The plot thickens as mutual desire grows and misunderstandings run rampant; while circumstances, led by imminent dangers and revelations, force them to misconstrue the the other's eternally deep feelings. While Alex's unwavering love stands steadfast - guarding her from her kindhearted yet bumbling matchmaking attempts and an unknown dark secret looming ever closer with the power to drain all Brette's future hope and happiness!
An entralling mixture of touching sentiment, lighthearted fun and enticing yearning.
No one writes quite like Cameron with her uniquely refreshing musings, vivid characters and heartwarming tales, a book and series I recommend ardently! Brilliant!!

Book 3 in the series was once again a sweet love story with lots of twists. The characters from the last books were in this one which was great. No slow bits , but I would have liked another chapter about meeting the grandma under better circumstances , and another chapter at the end, as it finished abruptly. Still a great story deserving of a five .

I liked this novel - the characters are familiar from the previous two novels so you get the feeling of being with family. The plot and subplots were interesting but I thought the intrigue of the guardianship and inheritance could have had a greater importance to the story. Alex was always the man who loved Brette in the series but it would have made an interesting novel if he had stayed a vicar and married Brette instead of becoming an Earl - vicar's got married too, I'm sure, and not just the upper class. Not much humor in this novel, either.

I have been waiting to read Brette's story and I wasn't disappointed. Brette is a very caring person and tries to help her friends. Although that help is not always a success. Then there is Alex, who loves Brette but feels he is unworthy of her. Will these two be able to have a successful conclusion? In this story there are a number of twists and turns, which all add to an interesting read. In fact, I had to keep reading to the end.
I voluntarily reviewed an arc copy but I also purchased a copy for my kindle as I will be reading it again.
