Mint Juleps and Justice (An Adams Grove Novel Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars (4,897)

Welcome to Adams Grove…where wrongs are righted with just desserts.

Luck abandoned Brooke Justice during her nasty divorce. Desperate to escape her malicious ex-husband, she relocated to the small town of Adams Grove, Virginia. When someone breaks into her new house, she suspects her ex bears the blame for the crime. With no evidence and little help from the police, she asks a private investigator to take her case—a private investigator whose sexy broad shoulders and stunning blue eyes make her question her decision to swear off relationships forever.

Mike Hartman fled Adams Grove when a devastating loss left his heart in pieces. After years overseas in the military, he’s finally returned home, determined to start anew as a private investigator. Then Brooke walks into his office, awakening something he hasn’t felt in years. Can they both move on…into each other’s arms? Or will the pain of the past—and the dangerous threat lurking in the present—destroy their new beginning?

From the Publisher

I’m a big-city girl through and through. But curled up with Mint Juleps and Justice, I wished I were from a small town. My cozy corner of choice? Adams Grove, Virginia, the heart and soul of Nancy Naigle’s book.

What I love most is that the town is a character itself. In Adams Grove, Nancy has created a warm, spirited place where the ladies shop for family BBQs at the Piggly Wiggly as they trade gossip in the aisles. Where sweet-smelling honeysuckle grows on picturesque, winding Old Horseshoe Road. Where the scones at the local bakery are as fresh as the romance. It’s a place where I actually
wanted everyone to know my name.

The truly special part? Nancy made Adams Grove a town where people can’t help falling in love—including Brooke, who retreats here after her divorce. She crosses paths with Mike, who’s trying to heal his own war-torn heart. They pair up to figure out who’s been lurking around (and snooping inside) Brooke’s home. Once they do, Adams Grove—and their love—becomes a safe haven for the couple, a place of solace and protection that they never expected to find. Even if their neighbors are on the nosy side.

Oh, and did I mention the food? It’s the meals in Adams Grove that bring the characters closer—in friendship, in family, and in love. I felt like I was sitting right back in my Grandma Ruby’s kitchen in Alabama, anxiously waiting for her honey-baked ham and buttery cornbread. For her, food was love. And in Adams Grove, with its scandalous goings-on and earnest matchmakers, love is what makes folks live—and delight—in their town for generations.

This is a very well written, exciting, suspenseful story. The characters are well defined, but very cautious and fearful of loving again after Mike and Brooke carry baggage. Brooke Justice is a cooperative extension consultant for ranchers and farmers in Virginia. She visits a ranch which will be the future home of race horses and meets the temporary manager, Mark Hartman (who is definitely all heart!). He's just helping out a friend as he has his own business as a private investigator who soon becomes involved with keeping Brooke safe from a soon-to-be ex-husband ... who keeps stalking her. But Mike also needs to watch his backside as he and a friend were the ones who had brought down Frank 'Goto' Gotorow who had murdered Mike's wife eight years ago. Now Goto is released from prison and is seeking revenge. This is the first book I've read by author Nancy Naigle, and it grabbed me right from the start and I could not put it down; it is so moving, exciting, and full of blossoming love. I'll be reading more of her works! Give this a try, you'll love it!

Mike and Brooke have enough baggage between them to fill a fleet of jetliners. Between Brooke's nasty divorce and the murder of Mike's wife eight years ago, the odds are seemingly stacked against them from the start.

One thing I love about Mint Juleps and Justice is this - the characters are REAL. Brooke Justice has a real job where she interacts with real people, and has a real fun quirk of believing in good luck signs almost religiously. Mike is a former Marine who is trying to balance himself back into civilian life by running a small-town investigative firm, and giving a military pup its first year of training.

Brooke's job throws them together from day one, and in a small town, chance encounters are bound to happen on a frequent basis once you've met someone face to face. The "chance" encounters turn purposeful when Brooke's baggage forces her to seek the aid of Mike's investigative services.

However, just when things were finally getting settled for Brooke and she begins to gain confidence in her ability to have a relationship with Mike, Mike's world gets turned up-side-down when he finds out, two months after the fact, that the baggage he thought himself finally ready to let go of and move forward from has once again reared its ugly head.

Without going into too many details, the progression of the story - both the main story between Brooke and Mike, and the plots surrounding each of their individual baggage - is fluid and keeps the reader engaged. The only thing keeping me from giving this book a full 5-star review is this - I simply do not like being clued into certain things before the characters are, which is the case with Mike's baggage.

Overall, it's a nice, easy read. It's real people engaging in a real relationship with real problems that can only be overcome together. It's a story I can relate to, and that just makes it all the more engaging.

Mint Juleps and Justice is part of Naigle's Adams Grove series set in Virginia. I have not read any of the previous books in the series, and I don't intend to. That has nothing to do with Naigle's skills as a writer but rather my lack of interest in the particular brand of romance that she offers: small town characters who engage in realistic ways and who have realistic problems with a little bit of realistic suspense thrown in.

The story is of Brooke Justice and Mike Hartman who find themselves relocating to Adams Grove for a fresh start. They meet, fall in love, and live happily ever after--but not before they each make peace with their fears, their past--and the lurking, sinister characters who threaten their lives.

Despite my initial disinterest in reading this book, Naigle's writing is engaging, which made finishing the book a pleasant experience. Parts of it drag and though they are likable and relatable, Brooke and Mike lack...personality and growth. I also found their story lacking in the kind of passion and tension that I expect between the leads in a romance novel.

More suspense (though on a very low scale) than a passionate romance, Mint Juleps and Justice is a quick enough read with realistic, likable characters with real life problems. Those who like this particular brand of romance will enjoy the story.

This is my favourite of the series so far, I know it is corny in parts but there is a bit more drama and I just loved it. The Lead characters Mike and Brooke are trying to recover from broken heartache in different ways Mike’s lost his wife in a horrific way 8 years ago which affected him so much that he joined the marines. Now he is back and is a private investigator as well as turning his hands to many things. Brooke is going through a divorce from a controlling nightmare of a man. When Mike and Brooke meet from the get go he is taken with her but the fear of being close to someone scares him, Brooke is taken with him but swears she will never get involved with a man for a long time especially with what she is going through.

Trouble starts when the ex husband to be surfaces and the culprit who took Mike’s life gets released. Things go from bad to worse and I found myself hooked
