- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI will admit it took me a bit to get into the story in the beginning along with errors here and there. Yet once I took a bigger bite I was hooked. Not knowing the answers to who, where and what about story for me is and was the intrigue that kept my interest to know more. When you meet people for the first time you don't know who they are or how their life was before you meet them. Yet getting to know them as time goes on you begin to see their story more clearly. This is how the beginning is for this story. In wanting to know the answers you get drawn in. I enjoyed the story and will continue to read the rest of the series. I want to know Jasn and Ciara better to see how it all fits together.
I recommend this story wholeheartedly. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review of this book because I love to read and endorse an author's writing I enjoy without revealing to much of the story to not to ruin it for others.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBottom line: would I recommend it? Yes.
It does kind of take a bit to start rolling, but it does find its pace after a bit. I've read reviews that talk about the lack of details and background, and there is a vagueness, but it didn't take from the story enough to make it hard to follow. Like the malazaan books, you are given what you are given and learn as you go.
The world is unique, interesting, and you are only given a glimpse into the vastness beyond that I hope will be explored in later books.
The pacing was fine once the story started rolling, and I started investing more into the characters. There are twists, that although not major world breaking, do keep setting hooks into the readers mind.
All in all, a fine book, and one that has convinced to to follow the rest of the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI’m not going to go into the details of the story, suffice it to say I enjoyed it immensely ! This isn’t my first book by DK Holmesberg and it certainly won’t be my last!
I’ve learned to just keep reading his books even if some start a little slow. I want to know these characters and I always do! I not only know them but I think about them even when I’m not reading. I think about the plot and can’t wait to get back to the book. I live each page and rise and fall and get back up again! What more could you ask for from a great read?
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe Whole Book is a Prologue... It is 238 slow moving pages just setting up the next book. The author does not reveal anything. You follow two main characters and at the end you have no real idea of what is going on.
I always have other book ones of other epics waiting in case the current one does not warrant me to continue on right away. So, I'll set this one down and start a new series. Over time I may decide to come back to it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI absolutely love your wonderful stories, D. K. Your characters are refreshingly interesting and exciting. This is the first book of this series and I am looking forward to reading the next book. Your story line is interesting, imaginative, exciting and outstanding. I highly recommend reading this book to anyone interested in reading a great story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseUnique storyline & characters. Felt as confused about what was happening as they did. Would need to read more in the series to figure out what is truly going on. Well written. Lot's of action and thrills.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGood writer good series. I've read several series by this author and have enjoyed them all. Four more words required
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2016Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI am giving this 4 stars based on D.K. Holmbergs track record. His books are all good. I am struggling with this one just trying to get through it. It seems to be moving very slowly, but I think my real struggle is that I have read the Cloud Warrior books and I have become very fond of the Draasin. To have to shift and read about them being chained and hunted is difficult. I am just having a hard time accepting Jasn. I know that it will get better but right now.....

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCan't make up my mind . Initially found this slow moving, eating up my time but not giving a return. It's only towards the very end that the author shows some promise and my imagination quickens.
