    This is another FABULOUS children's book by author Sherry Ellis. My 5 grandchildren enjoy all of Ellis' work, so I was excited to get them the latest one. Happy Birthday to Us is a fabulous book about a child born on July 4, so not only is it a book where a child can learn about the founding fathers and the history of the 4th, it also covers an area of all children born on a major holiday. Wonderful concept, writing, and illustrations.

    Georgia author Sherry Ellis is a lady with many talents - not only does she write exceptional children's books, but she also is a professional musician who plays and teaches violin, viola, and piano. She is the author of ‘Ten Zany Birds’, `That Baby Woke Me Up, AGAIN' (her debut book), ‘Don’t Feed the Elephant’, ‘Bubba and Squirts’ series of four books, and `That Mama is a Grouch' (honored as a finalist is in two awards and a winner in the 2011 International Book Awards. It also was awarded first place in the parenting category of the 2011 Pinnacle Book Awards and was the recipient of the silver award in the 2013 Mom's Choice Awards.     Being born on July fourth means that, for one young child living in the United States, festivals and celebrations abound in their town on that day every year. Parades, parties, food, and fireworks mark the occasion, and as the child learns more about the meaning of the Fourth of July, they begin to realize that they share an annual celebration with one of the most momentous occasions in American history. This rhyming, approachable picture book is a lovely reminder of the joy and community that often occur within Fourth of July celebrations in the United States. Brief lines of text utilize a singsong, predictable meter and fun rhymes to share the story from the birthday child's point of view. Thanks to this design, the book is a delight to read aloud and to share with children of a wide range of ages. Active, detailed illustrations depict the featured child and the many members of their community participating in events together on this special day. A variety of skin tones and ages appear on the cheerful faces of the people in the images, reflecting some of the diversity of the people who call the United States home. An author's note at the end of the book connects readers more deeply with the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the Fourth of July holiday itself, inviting further reflection and investigation beyond the story. Charming, entertaining, and well suited to young readers, this is a noteworthy addition to library collections celebrating the Fourth of July holiday, just in time for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
