This is a series that must be read in order to fully understand the growing relationship between the two main characters, Raphael, a human and Lord Teo, a Chi’NoSa. Book one is Raphael’s Rescue when he is taken prisoner by Lord Teo and how two men different as day and night learn from each other. Their story continues in this book and ends in book three.
Raphael has become comfortable in his life with Teo and even though he sorely misses his family on Mars his love for Teo has grown to the point where he cannot imagine life without him. If you have read book one, then you are aware of how their relationship began and it was not a smooth or happy start. Teo is a Chi’NoSaa very aggressive race who are not even able to live near each other or socialize with each other. Teo is judge and jury for all on his ship and that also went for Raphael.
As the two of them spent time with each other it became apparent that they were deeply in love and Teo made Raphael Advisor/Consort allowing him many liberties no one else is allowed to even hope for.
Teo has convinced the Chi’NoSa to allow him and Raphael to approach the Ta’kunisi to compromise for the minerals on their planet. So far, the Ta’Kuni have refused to accept the Chi’NoSa and even refuse to learn their language. If a compromise is not reached the planet will be annihilated and failure would result in Teo losing faith.
While brokering a compromise Teo begins to face the fact that he is losing what makes him Chi’NoSa and that Raphael’s influence has caused him to believe he is not acting according to his station. His answer is to break from Raphael, he will no longer be his Chosen or his Consort, breaking Raphael’s heart. Teo promises that once the negotiations with the Ta’Kunisi are finished Raphael will be brought home to Mars.
Raphael tries to convince Teo that change happens, nothing can stay stationary, you must move forward and change. As a human Raphael is constantly thanking people, bowing to them out of respect and Teo unwillingly accepts it till he realizes that accepting it is not the Chi’NoSa way.
A wonderful addition to this wonderful series; and a story of acceptance and change. There is also a betrayal something else a result of a human living with Chi’NoSa.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseRaphael is on his way to the planet Ta’Kun with his Chi’NoSa lover Lord Teo to offer the inhabitants an unprecedented compromise from the Chi’NoSa. A lot is riding on the success of the mission, possibly including Raphael's life. The danger may be closer than the pair realize, as not everyone is happy with the influence Raphael has on Teo.
Raphael remains the excessively polite yet strong-willed character we got to know in the first book. His mental powers prove to be quite a bit stronger than you may have thought, as he “communicates” with planets in much the way Sir Yaden does. While he doesn't get harmed physically as much in this book, the mental ups and downs Raphael has to endure are still heart-wrenching.
Teo is definitely the more conflicted character in this story. He is torn between upholding the rigid traditions that his culture believes, and the possibility of something better that Raphael's ways seem to promise. His attempts to reconcile the expectations of his people with the changes Raphael brings provides much of the drama of the plot.
Curiously, there's a common theme running through this book and the one I just finished, Historic Ember. The two stories are very different, but they both end up discussing the inevitability of change. You can try to fight it, turn it to your advantage, or just accept it, but change will happen no matter what. In “Raphael's Redemption,” Raphael is, unintentionally, the agent of change, and much of the story revolves around Teo's urge to fight it.
As in the first volume of the series, the ornately formal dialog between the characters is a bit distracting. I still liked the story. I just think it would be a better read if the language was a bit more natural. It also felt like the story telegraphed the major plot twists a bit too clearly. Maybe I just read too much these days, but I could tell where the story was going a few chapters in.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2022Format: KindleThis is CJ Dragon's second book in her Archangel Series and I must say it is as good, if not even better than the first. That is quite an accomplishment since the first was ridiculously well-written. The series revolves around the relationship between Teo, a prideful and arrogant ruler of just about everything...including worlds... who does not understand the meaning of the word no. He comes from a warrior race where emotion and empathy is verboten. That is rather inconvenient for both him and his consort, a human empath who always has a smile on his face and in his heart. Volume one introduced us to the couple and now that they ARE a couple, drama returns with a vengeance...some of it manufactured by those who oppose this "odd couple" union.
As in the first book I just wanted to crawl onto those pages and pimp slap (metaphorically) Teo for his inability to compromise. But it makes for a wonderful storyline and by the end of this six hour read things are looking up. The author is great at world-building and I was easily able to visualize the alien worlds which serve as the background for the story. Further, the author skillfully allows us to see and feel what is happening in the minds of the two protagonists. I almost felt I was eavesdropping. Oh wait, I was.
As with the first book I cried involuntarily and laughed heartily. The story has a satisfying ending but we realize there most certainly will be a third volume and thank goodness for that. This is the third book of Ms. Dragon I have read and each has been a carefully and lovingly crafted read. I look forward to reading the work of this author hopefully for years to come.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2022Format: KindleI thought that book one was good but this one was even better. I can't wait to see how book three improves on the series.
I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion
