The Sombrero and the Cactus Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars (2)

The town was dying, a casualty of the Southern Pacific's decision to relocate its operations to the south closer to the border. It seemed that the tiny habitat of Prickly Pear, Arizona was doomed until, that is, the Gomez family arrived with their four young daughters and two alcoholic uncles who settle into a nearby migrant camp known as Santa Puto from which they make their way into town and ingratiate themselves among the locals.Set against the backdrop of ill-conceived immigration policies, the town must rely on the family of quirky illegals to revive its fortunes before the INS closes the town forever.

Robert A. Henricks (born April 22, 1952), is an American writer of historical and crime fiction. His culinary/FBI series of books features chef/agent Harry Wells and fellow agent Ronnie Malcolm. The action stories follow Chef Wells' passion as a foodie as well as the involvement he develops with the FBI regarding criminal investigations into organized crime, international intrigue and home grown terror. His Bureau partner, Malcolm, is a career agent who meets Wells while investigating a Chinese drug cartel. The two find common ground in dealing with the criminal element, though in other respects they work together despite their differences.

In the Harry Wells mystery series, Chef Wells' passion for cooking mirrors that of the author. Harry Wells is a former DIA operative turned executive chef of a small Greek restaurant in Alexandria, New York, but who moonlights for the FBI with fellow agent Malcolm. The two develop a comradery which plays off of their racial diversity, with Wells being caucasian and Malcolm African-American. In time the two come to depend on each other and to rely on each other's training and well hone talents to see them through one harrowing circumstance to another.

Henricks' penchant for history is evident in his period novels such as, FOURTEEN DAYS IN JUNE, an alternative account of D-Day in 1944, GHOST MISSION, the tale of a RAF pilot shot down in the air war with Germany and JEWELS OF THE CROWN, the fictionalized story of the loss and recovery of the crown jewels of King John.

"The Sombrero and the Cactus" is a satire which addresses a paradox--we, as odd and unique individuals, can recognize that we are all the same.
Fans of reruns of the 60's classic, "The Andy Griffith Show," will find something familiar in this southwestern parallel with its quirky small town denizens who face the sudden interpolation of a band of Hispanic migrants into their formerly isolated, monolingual and white community.  Will these Whites react out of an undercurrent of pre-programed fear or rise to the occasion and allow their better angels to come forth?
The novel may send post baby boom generations to Google to decipher some of its references (Charo, Bernie Madoff, Nolan Ryan...), and some of the politically incorrect dialog of some of the well meaning, but racist sounding,  principal characters may be off-putting to some readers. Ultimately, however, readers find that there is hope that humans can evolve. Henricks has written an uplifting tale many can enjoy
