As part of Alabama Solutions’ Innovation Lab, we designed and built Rooma App, a digital platform aimed at simplifying how people find rooms and compatible roommates in urban environments.
The shared housing market is highly fragmented. People searching for rooms rely on informal channels, while hosts struggle to reach trustworthy, relevant candidates. Roommates App was created to centralize listings, reduce friction, and introduce structure and intelligence into a traditionally chaotic process.
This project focused on validating a scalable product concept for shared living, combining marketplace fundamentals with intelligent matching and real-time interaction.
The challenge was not just building an app: it was designing a two-sided platform that balances trust, usability, and scalability.
We approached the project as a product experiment, not just a development effort.
We modeled the platform around real user flows: searching, filtering, shortlisting, matching, and contact, optimizing both sides of the marketplace.
Using Agile practices, we delivered a focused MVP that prioritized core interactions instead of overloading the product with premature features.
Rather than basic listings, we introduced structured preference data (habits, lifestyle, expectations) to enable smarter roommate suggestions.
