Holy ISH!! I can tell you, confidently, right now, in THIS moment, as an illustrator that is going on their 4th year of hiatus because they just can't "get it right", reading this post has just CHANGED MY LIFE. I feel enlightened. THAT'S IT. ISH. I don't have to get it right. I can get it right-ish, okay-ish.

This is EXACTLY what I needed to hear. I'm gonna go RIGHT NOW and draw something. Whatever it is, even if it's just okay-ish. Thank you, you have no idea what you've just done for me. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Han. So glad three little letters could make such a big impact! All credit goes to Peter H Reynolds and his lovely book! May you have a ish-filled drawing time. 🥳 🎉

Loving the enthusiasm and curiosity what you’re going to draw…. 🤩

What beautiful thoughts on creativity and courage. I haven’t read this book but now I want to read it to my children (especially the ones who tell me they “can’t draw people.” People-ish here we come!

Thanks Shannon and Yay! It makes me so happy for people to discover this book for the first time!

Sounds like we are in the same stage of life… our youngest in the throes of high school and making the summer a very busy season for us (please get your license soon girl!!!), and our middle daughter home from college and working like crazy!! It’s such a fun time… but ever changing!! Cheers to parenting beautiful young adults!!! 🥂

Hi! It's to great hear from someone in the same stage. I'm trying to enjoy it as much as possible knowing how quickly it will change again. I do like these young adult people so much!

It’s a different stage of parenting sir sure… but dang they are so funny and I am learning from them daily … what a gift!!b

Such a great approach…take the pressure off! My 5y.o., who still makes her art fearlessly (I hope that never changes), is an inspiration to me daily.

Yes! I had four young kids when I first started drawing and painting, they were basically my artist community. The best kind.

I have a specific memory of sitting in a room full of adults for an art class. All of the adults were hunched over and stressed out about "getting it right" and all of the sudden my 6-year-old (who was tagging along) called out "I'm a great artist mommy!" Imagine if we all had more of that bold confidence.

Thanks friend. I feel like we're both doing the best we can to lean into an ish-ful life more and more as the years go on. I hope your new house is becoming home-ish!

If this isn't a "Good and Beautiful Thing," I don't know what is! I have always struggled with drawing and painting. This is a wonderful newsletter! Reading this was like a light coming on for me. Thank you!

Yay! I'm so glad that it's caused a similar shift to the one that started for me back when I first encountered "Ish"! It's music to my ears (and heart).

Okay, I think I’m going to take this idea for a new sketchbook practice. Just thinking about the word ‘Ish..’ can change the mindset and pressure of making something perfect and just do it anyways. But also in a playful and gentle way. Your sketches are so sweet, by the way.

I love this post so much, thanks sharing the inspiration, Aimee 💛🌼🌼

P.S I wonder how many of us will likely to read the book now?!!

Aimee Guest's avatar

Thanks Susan. ♥️ It's just amazing how three letters can be so simple and magical at the same time isn't it? It thrills me that this book will most likely find its way into new hands!

Susan Jimenez's avatar

Totally! I need more of simplicity ☺️ I’ve never come across the book. So I’ll have to add it to my book list!
